General
- Above the Somerset Levels with stunning views over 30 miles
- 12 miles from Glastonbury and seven from Wells
- Bar and restaurant on site with a wide range of options
Phew, what a view… the outlook from Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park takes in the smashing Somerset Levels and its moors, the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the River Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Dene, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor – in fact over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away.
Bowdens Crest has a play area on site, on the edge of nine and a half acres of natural woodland where the kids can burn off suitable amounts of energy to let the grownups crack open the wine at sunset.
The site is high up, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents; if you don’t have your own you can buy them in the site shop which is open for a couple of hours every day).
Amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, an accessible/family shower room and a family bath and shower room.
Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available, and the games/information room has books, board games, DVDs, pool tables, football tables, games machines and several sockets to charge phones and other equipment free of charge.
Alfie's Bar & Bistro will fill grumbling tums at noon and dinner time from a menu of veggie options, kids' picks and hefty roasts (opening hours vary: please see site terms below); while you’re mulling it all over, you could sip on one of the local ciders or ales on offer and taking in the views from the bar’s garden. On a clear day, you may just find it impossible to move yourself…

Local attractions
The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street.
Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.)
The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales.
Tiny Wells, about 20 miles away, is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves and look for the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills, where dinosaurs, King Kong and pirate golf abound these days too.
Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing.
Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.
While you’re on the coast, the Animal Farm Adventure Park is a popular pick with animal-petting youngsters, and a SeaQuarium is a little further along the shore at Weston-super-Mare.
