View from behind the Mad Hatters bar

General

  • Above the Somerset Levels with stunning views over 30 miles
  • 12 miles from Glastonbury and seven from Wells
  • Bar and restaurant on site with a wide range of options

Phew, what a view… the outlook from Bowdens Crest Caravan & Camping Park takes in the smashing Somerset Levels and its moors, the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the River Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Dene, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor – in fact over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away.

Bowdens Crest has a play area on site, on the edge of nine and a half acres of natural woodland where the kids can burn off suitable amounts of energy to let the grownups crack open the wine at sunset.

The site is high up, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents; if you don’t have your own you can buy them in the site shop which is open for a couple of hours every day).

Amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, an accessible/family shower room and a family bath and shower room.

Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available, and the games/information room has books, board games, DVDs, pool tables, football tables, games machines and several sockets to charge phones and other equipment free of charge.

Alfie's Bar & Bistro will fill grumbling tums at noon and dinner time from a menu of veggie options, kids' picks and hefty roasts (opening hours vary: please see site terms below); while you’re mulling it all over, you could sip on one of the local ciders or ales on offer and taking in the views from the bar’s garden. On a clear day, you may just find it impossible to move yourself…

Please note

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

When booking a pitch it is important that you state your correct unit type so that the correct pitch can be allocated. The site is unable to take bookings without this information.

Guests must be genuine holidaymakers and stay for holiday purposes only.

All food at the restaurant is freshly made so at busy times there may be a wait. Opening times for the bar and kitchen will vary throughout the season. During low season, up until Easter, it only opens on Friday and Saturday evenings and on Sunday at lunchtime. It can also be opened on request if there is enough demand.

DON'T BE PUT OFF BY ACCESS ROAD REVIEWS.
Firstly we are a young family very new to towing (2nd time ever) we drive 2 hrs from the Midlands and was anxious of the access road but really not that bad if we can do it anyone can. Yes the road isn't the widest but not Impossible. It's quiet road to and we never came across a on coming car even when didn't have the caravan. The manager was superb in helping us reverse the caravan into our pitch and put us as ease. The local residents of the park specially a man named "tiny" helped us put up awning and even guided us out upon leaving so just want to say a massive thank you to you all.

Location- right in the middle of Mendip hills with superb views. Yes there is a shop on site which was closed a few times but 1 min down the road is a local tesco so wasn't a problem. Some lovely walks off the caravan site to. Not a lot around but perfect base camp. We drove out to Glastonbury tor. Burham on sea. Kilve beach fossil hunting we had the best time before coming back to caravan and having a bbq etc..

There is a bar on site which was open a few times but when wasn't.. again not a problem. Few beers from local tesco and bbq while the kids played away. Site is safe which coded gate and even a games room which the kids loved and most time went off playing in there whilst we had our bbq.

Showers and toilets were clean and Laundry area to which we didn't need to use.

The only minor thing we had was a lady with 2 border collie dogs tell us the one walk was for dog walkers only and to use the other path but we took no notice and tbh the path to right of park was much better. Went for miles through fields and then come to a forest.. Kids loved it.. Again only minor and not really to do with the site itself

We really enjoyed it here and considering we are complete newbies it was easy. Just want to say a big thank you to you all who helped us there. We hopefully will see you again :)

Peaceful, quiet, facilities clean but looking tired and need some TLC

    Disliked:

We have used this site many times over the last 8 years and it has gone down hill. There was no food available in restaurant. The site has changed management in the last year, and no longer opens the restaurant from Monday to Thursday, which is one of the reasons we have used this site in the past and nothing was stated on the booking page to inform that there would be no food available. We saw nothing of the site management during our stay, unlike previous years when management have been friendly and walked around checking if all is ok and site users happy, It would appear that the site is heading towards becoming a site for statics and not for camping. Good site for use as a base but sadly it's lost it's personality.

Friendly manager and staff Little fair for the bank holiday ...05/28/2019

    Friendly manager and staff
Little fair for the bank holiday was good- cakes, lucky dip and splat the rat were fun!
Nice cafe and bar with reasonable priced food and friendly service
    Games room
    Lovely view
Clean showers - lots of hot water, really nice.
Secure and safe campsite with gates and a code needed to gain entry to the site

    Disliked:

We were a bit confused by the none numbered pitched areas in the centre of the field. We feel happier knowing a specific pitch and what space we have and that we aren't encroaching on other people's space.

We didn't like the strong smell from a certain type of herbal smokers in the far corner of the field. Suprised this was allowed.

Felt it was more geared towards campervans/caravans and families with older children or adult only couples

Local attractions

The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street.

Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.)

The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales.

Tiny Wells about 20 miles away is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves and look for the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills, where dinosaurs, King Kong and pirate golf abound these days too.

Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing.

Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.

While you’re on the coast, the Animal Farm Adventure Park is a popular pick with animal-petting youngsters, and a SeaQuarium is a little further along the shore at Weston-super-Mare.
