Touring pitches

General

  • Above the Somerset Levels with stunning views over 30 miles
  • 12 miles from Glastonbury and seven from Wells
  • Bar and restaurant on site with a wide range of options

Phew, what a view… the outlook from Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park takes in the smashing Somerset Levels and its moors, the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the River Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Dene, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor – in fact over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away.

Bowdens Crest has a play area on site, on the edge of nine and a half acres of natural woodland where the kids can burn off suitable amounts of energy to let the grownups crack open the wine at sunset.

The site is high up, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents; if you don’t have your own you can buy them in the site shop which is open for a couple of hours every day).

Amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, an accessible/family shower room and a family bath and shower room.

Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available, and the games/information room has books, board games, DVDs, pool tables, football tables, games machines and several sockets to charge phones and other equipment free of charge.

Alfie's Bar & Bistro will fill grumbling tums at noon and dinner time from a menu of veggie options, kids' picks and hefty roasts (opening hours vary: please see site terms below); while you’re mulling it all over, you could sip on one of the local ciders or ales on offer and taking in the views from the bar’s garden. On a clear day, you may just find it impossible to move yourself…

Please note

Bookings must not be for more than 21 consecutive nights.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The kitchen facilities are closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

When booking a pitch it is important that you state your correct unit type so that the correct pitch can be allocated. The site is unable to take bookings without this information.

Guests must be genuine holidaymakers and stay for holiday purposes only.

All food at the restaurant is freshly made so at busy times there may be a wait. Opening times for the bar and kitchen will vary throughout the season. During low season, up until Easter, it only opens on Friday and Saturday evenings and on Sunday at lunchtime. It can also be opened on request if there is enough demand.

Ablutions were very clean and modern. CDP was well equipped and under cover. Views from the site over "the levels" are stunning. Some seasonal pitches were well maintained by the 'van owner

    Disliked:

Hardstanding pitch was nowhere near level and dirty (cigarette ends etc). Some seasonal pitches not well maintained and looked like miniature scrapyards and caravans with very large external gas bottles. Also the access road is not far from half a mile and is single track - not the best for a large vehicle or car with caravan.

From the manager...

Hi we are sorry that you feel this way but we have had no other complaints regarding the pitch and if you had let us know about the rubbish then it would have been cleaned straight away, with regards to the access road this site has been here for many years and there has never been a problem with the road.

The showers and toilets were very good and kept to a high standard.
There are good dish washing and laundry facilities.
The security was good with electric gates and coded access.
We enjoyed our stay at Bowdens Crest with friendly and helpful hosts.

    Disliked:

The site was mainly campers and caravans with a lot of chalets and it seemed that a lot were long term occupiers which did not present a problem as they were friendly and helpful.
The tent pitches were just four in the middle of a field surrounded by campers and caravans.
But the main disappointment was that I chose this site because it was advertised as having WiFi the only connection we got was by the club house.
Don't expect the fantastic views from your pitch as this is behind the club house but well worth walking over.

From the manager...

Hi Tony no where on our web site do we say that you have the views of the levels from the pitches, we have space for 6 tents with electric hook up, the caravans around the edge are all seasonal pitch holders, we are disappointed that you wont be returning.

    Not alot

    Disliked:

Felt like we were staying on a gypsy camp. We were put amongst seasonal caravans, which looked like they’d been there for years. Not much going on, didn’t see hardly anyone. No views. Toilets and showers not great. Everything needs knocking down and rebuilding. No signs of the owners. Really disappointing site. Didn’t feel much like a holiday campsite, had no atmosphere and almost felt creepy. Will not be returning.

From the manager...

Hi our site is nothing like a gypsy camp, and our seasonal caravans have not been here for years even if they had that is what a seasonal pitch is and if you had looked around you would have seen that they are all in good condition and are not that old, this site is a quiet site if you wanted entertainment then this was not the site for you, we have fantastic views over looking the Somerset levels you obviously didn't walk around, I assume that you thought it was creepy because we surrounded by woodlands and that is way our visitor come here.

Local attractions

The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street.

Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.)

The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales.

Tiny Wells, about 20 miles away, is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves and look for the witch at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills, where dinosaurs, King Kong and pirate golf abound these days too.

Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing.

Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.

While you’re on the coast, the Animal Farm Adventure Park is a popular pick with animal-petting youngsters, and a SeaQuarium is a little further along the shore at Weston-super-Mare.
