Dog walking field, with footpath into acres of mature woodland, leading to the river parrett

  • Adults-only site with a woodland above the Somerset Levels
  • Half an hour's drive from Glastonbury and 40 minutes from Wells
  • On-site weekend-only pub with a sundeck overlooking a 32-mile view
Phew, what a view… adults-only Bowdens Crest Caravan and Camping Park overlooks the Somerset Levels and its moors, as well as the Quantock and Blackdown Hills, the river Parrett and the Vale of Taunton Deane, stretching out towards Brendon Hill and Exmoor. Over 30 miles of Somerset surroundings can be seen from here on a clear day, all the way to Minehead. The site covers nine and a half acres of natural woodland and elevated land, set on white lias stone with an eight-inch soil top (rock pegs are recommended for tents). There's an on-site pub, the Bowden's Bar, which is open on weekends only and has a scenic sundeck with views of the countryside; there are entertainment nights on occasion throughout the year. Plus, local street food trucks pay the site a visit on weekends, so grab some hot food to eat in the bar or take back to your pitch. On-site amenities include chemical disposal and a well-maintained toilet and shower block with separate ladies’ and gents’ sections, and an accessible shower room. Washing-up sinks with free hot water are also available. There is also an on-site fitness centre where you can keep fit while on holiday. The small town of Langport is about a mile and a half away. It's half an hour's drive from the site to Glastonbury or 40 minutes to Wells.

What customers say

Great welcome, helpful staff, and amazing views are highlights. Campsite's super clean with well-kept facilities. Bar's a good spot. Some note dog barks, spotty Wi-Fi, and unclear bar hours. Site isn't adults-only as advertised.

Liked Very welcoming and great tour of the site on arrival. Facilities were lovely and clean! We found there was a pub on site that is run by the local people and they were so welcoming and chatty! Even offered us their heaters for the night as we were the only muppets camping in February. Will definitely return!

Liked Good quality facilities - shower block, dishwashing, etc. There was also a gym.

Disliked Not well set up for tourers - just an area of grass surrounded by seasonal pitches.

Not so easy to fill fresh water and drain waste in a motorhome.

Local attractions

The best of Somerset is close to hand from Bowdens Crest, such as witch hunting at Wookey Hole Caves, striding around the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills and the Somerset Levels, exploring the subterranean sights of Cheddar Caves, or, for the more modern, happily spending holiday money at Clarks Village in nearby Street. Glastonbury is about 12 miles away; these days it’s probably better known for its famous fest nearby, but a more peaceful time can be had around Glastonbury Abbey, which has stood on this site since the seventh century and which may – just possibly – be King Arthur’s Avalon where the mighty Excalibur was forged (Arthur and Queen Guinevere are purportedly buried here.) The ‘holy hill’ of Glastonbury Tor, home to Gwyn ap Nudd or the King of the Fairies, is another legendary local highlight to trek to: Somerset picnics taste super at the base of St Michael’s Tower, accompanied by tasty views of the Somerset Levels, Wiltshire, Dorset and over to Wales. Tiny Wells, about 20 miles away, is well worth a visit too: once there, see the show caves at the Wookey Hole Caves on the edge of the Mendip Hills. Another seven or so miles north-west and on the south side of the Mendips, spectacular Cheddar is worth at least a day to see the most of Cheddar Gorge and Cheddar Caves, where you can stick to sightseeing or be a bit more adventurous caving or rock climbing. Outdoor options in the area include hiring a bike and pedalling off from Langport Visitor Centre into the Somerset countryside, fishing on the River Parrett and around Bridgwater, Somerton and Taunton, or sea fishing for Dover sole and bass from the beach at Burnham-on-Sea.
