Springtime camping

  • Off-grid, environmentally-conscious campsite on the North Downs Way
  • Half a mile from Seale; Guildford a 10-minute drive
  • Firepits to hire and a woodfired sauna to use for an additional fee
If ‘secluded but certainly not isolated’ sounds like the sort of location that’s just right for you, take a look at Waggoners Campsite at Hampton Estate. This family-run site is surrounded by scenic Surrey countryside, and yet it’s a mere half-mile from the little village of Seale and only a little further from the A31. All is peaceful and pretty at this site – pitches are part of a large field fringed by woodland, and they have stunning views over the Surrey Hills National Landscape. And if you fancy some more targeted relaxation, book yourself in at The Waggon Sauna on the estate for an additional fee; this off-grid woodfired sauna with cold water therapies has lush views of the hills and is just a short walk away. The staff at the Waggoners Campsite at Hampton Estate make an extra effort to create a friendly camping experience, with an emphasis on space, seclusion and escapism. This environmentally conscious spot also tries to minimise its impact on the planet, with green solutions like hand-made compost loos and cold wild woodland showers. The whole place is off-grid, so it might be a good idea to bring a torch along. Barbecues are permitted for alfresco cooking, and firepits are also available to hire. Fancy seeing some more of that lovely countryside? The site is on the North Downs Way, near the Surrey Cycleway and not far from several good places to take the dog for a walk too. If the kids aren’t into all that walking, they may like to know that both Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventures are a little over half an hour’s drive away.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked There is space in the field, they don't pack it out. The loo's are great, the showers fabulous and the new sauna is stunning.

Disliked It would be good if an area of the field could be adults only.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Really spacious, you can pick your pitch. Firepit and wood packs available to buy onsite. It’s right on the north downs way. Finally you get perfect mobile signal 4G, 5G.
Another review mentioned the hum noise from the road, but once your settled in you don’t recognise it.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Last night of the season (until next year), so we had the site completely to ourselves. Service and facilities were top notch; Nikki was there to say "Hi" and make sure we had everything we need. Evidence that every camper matters, even the ones camping on the last night night of the season - could have been so easy not to bother, but that is not how these site operates. Brilliant.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Every thing about Waggoners is great, the location, facilities (which increase every year), general quiet nature of the site even when fully booked there is still lots of room for 2 boys to run wild with balls and sticks. And by no means last the fantastic Nikki who makes staying so friendly, inviting and like being "home". Nikki is always there when needed and friendly with adults and my boys.

Disliked Not much to dislike

Local attractions

If you need a quick way to stretch your legs, start with a stroll on Puttenham Common or take a walk into Seale for a craft shop and tea room – either one will take you about 15 minutes on foot. A little further afield, you could also take a wander around the ruins of Waverley Abbey or the colourful pathways of Tilford Cottage Garden (both 15 minutes’ drive). Getting a glimpse of the past might involve an outing to the Rural Life Living Museum (20 minutes) or going into Guildford (15 minutes) to see the castle and Guildford House before stopping by at Loseley Park on the return journey. None of those quite what you’re in the mood for? How about a round at Farnham Park Golf Course (15 minutes), a day of thrill rides at Thorpe Park or exploring the theme park, zoo and aquarium at Chessington World of Adventures? Both are a little over a half-hour drive away.
