  • Rural and informal Ockley camping field in the Surrey Hills
  • A 20-minute drive to Horsham; 45 minutes to the beach
  • Walking or biking distance from pubs
Walkers, bikers and horse riders – all are welcomed at Vann Farm Camping, a relaxed family campsite in the Surrey Hills. The spacious pitches here are set in a secluded field, with direct access to miles of footpaths around Vann Lake and through Ockley Woods. As well as countless hiking and cycling trails (like the North Downs Way, a few miles north) you may also be glad to know that there are several good pubs within walking or biking distance. The closest is in the village of Ockley, just 400 metres away, where you’ll also find a small store for last-minute bits, with bigger supermarkets 15 minutes away in Horsham. For different days out nearby, you can play a round of golf or head to the seaside, about 45 minutes' drive away. If they've been well behaved (or you need to tempt them into being so), you may also like to treat the kids to a day out at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, half an hour away. Now for the practicalities: this peaceful site has parking in an adjacent field as well as loo and shower facilities and drinking water close to the pitches. Barbecues are permitted in firepits (rent one on site or bring your own) but please don’t take kindling from the woodlands, as they are part of a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Guests are encouraged to recycle any rubbish, although bins are available.

Local attractions

The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is criss-crossed with walking, riding and cycling paths, with many of them suitable for kids. Climb Holmbury Hill or Leith Hill Tower for spectacular countryside views, and the Rhododendron Wood is worth seeing in spring for its glorious flower displays. All of these are less than 15 minutes’ drive away. Chances are the daily shows and thrill rides at Chessington World of Adventures or Thorpe Park resorts (both less than 45 minutes away) will be top of the kids’ to-do list, but you can also be on the beach in Brighton or Worthing for paddles, watersports and seaside amusements in less than an hour. For more grownup days out, take guided tours of the vines at Denbies Wine Estate (20 minutes) and Bolney Wine Estate (half an hour), or stroll through the smart gardens at the National Trust's Nymans estate (25 minutes) and Sussex Prairie Garden (half an hour).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: The toilets and showers were great. They were clean and the showers was nice and hot. Nice to have a phone call when we arrived.

Disliked: The info and reviews on Pitch up don’t seem to match the campsite. We actually thought we might’ve arrived at the wrong site to start with!

- Derelict structures on the field
- under a flight path
- Noisy neighbours had a party until 2am
- no tea/coffee van - might not bother most people but was a draw for us

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Facilities (toilets, shower) were in a good condition (although no light so you have to bring your own later in the evening).

Disliked: Some information about the site wasn’t accurate - there was no coffee or tea tent, and the animals didn’t feel like they were connected
to the camp site (and no eggs as the pictures indicate!). There were shacks/structures on the site (from a festival?) that didn’t seem particularly safe for children to play in (some were fenced off but with gaps in the fence, others not fenced off). The site was directly under a flight path - this didn’t bother us too much but might disturb others. More disturbing was that there was a noisy party in a nearby house that went on long into the night. There was nobody there to greet us, but we did get a phone call. The fire pits burnt the long grass underneath so potentially not safe to use in very dry conditions.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful surroundings, quiet local village, pizza oven on site, bar on site, good pitches and space between tents, relaxed atmosphere, football pitch and giant chair for kids, walking distance to local town and pubs and play park, table tennis, coffees on site

Disliked: Dog poo in field, lack of sinks for hand washing after using loo, one sink for whole campsite for washing up, washing hands, cleaning teeth etc. lack of recycling bins (none!!), some of loo and shower doors were not able to be locked, one of showers was freezing, one too hot.

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. We are sorry to hear about the dog poo in the field, we encourage owners to keep dogs on leads for this reason but do keep dog poo bags available and are happy to clear up, if brought to our attention. We have tried recycling in the past but incorrect items have been placed in the bin and has caused the bins to be rejected. We are looking to improve bin management in the future. We have the showers on a thermostat, we know everyone has there preferences and are able to change the temperature when requested. We are glad you enjoyed your stay with us and hope to see you again. Thank you, Vann Farm Camping

Lovely area with great potential but need to get basics right.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Beautiful area. Went for a lovely walk in the woods to the lake. Also found some lovely pubs nearby. Site was a great size and very peaceful.
Pizzas available in evening as well as hot drinks ice creams and breakfast sandwiches. We didn't avail of this but it's a nice touch. Great if you want to travel light although they were overpriced.

Disliked: Having to park away from where we pitched tent. Lots of holes in ground and surface generally uneven which could be a health and safety hazard.
Biggest issue is that this site do not get the basics right. There was no running water in the portaloos so you had to wash hands in the one basin that was used for cleaning dishes and brushing teeth.water at this sink was cold as were some of the showers. People were using the hot shower to wash pots and pans. The doors on the toilets did not close.
Added extras like shop are nice to have but decent toilets, showers and washing area are essential. You need to get the basics right.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback we are trying to improve with every visit. Due to the dry conditions we did allow cars onto the campsite for set up and breakdown, however outside of this we try to avoid vehicles on the site due to children running about and to make the area as safe as possible. We are also working on a more permanent plumbing set-up for the 2023 season. We’ve just checked the toilet doors and they do all lock so I believe this has been rectified. Thank you, Vann Farm Camping
