Camping in the pond field

  • Family-run farm campsite 20 minutes' walk from Hever Castle
  • Chiddingstone and Penshurst Place within a 10-minute drive
  • On-site carp and roach fishing available; firewood for sale
Camping in Kent is a fine option indeed, whether you're after family-friendly breaks in the Garden of England, wine-tasting vineyard voyages or just a quiet rural break within easy reach of London. Hever Camping, a family-run site half a mile from the small village of Markbeech, makes an excellent base for all three – and with a good dose of history thrown in too… Managed by sisters Sarah and Gina, the farm where Hever Camping is based has been in the hands of the same family for over 100 years, meaning your hosts are very knowledgeable about the local area. Originally a dairy farm attached to the Hever Castle estate, the cows are now long gone – but the grand grounds of the castle and its gardens are easily accessed on foot in around 20 minutes. Hever Camping is split into two parts – Farm Field, with toilets and washing-up area (with hot water) and the more remote Pond Field, with toilets and cold water. The farm is home to a woodland, a pond, trees that are great for climbing and a Wendy house for the kids. On-site angling is available, with likely catches including carp and roach. Firewood is sold here too (subject to availability). Nearby off-site amenities include Markbeech's pub and farm shop (10 minutes' walk from the site gates) and Cowden railway station (20 minutes), where direct trains can take you to London Bridge in as little as 45 minutes.

What customers say

This roomy, chill campsite has friendly staff & good basics like clean washrooms. The on-site food truck is a big plus! While many love the natural, open vibe and quiet, some note plane noise and occasional maintenance snags, especially in Pond Field. It's a great base for exploring.

Farm Field primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Staff at check in were lovely, showers and toilets on site were an unexpected bonus. Food van being on site was a real treat.

Disliked The facilities probably needed a bit of love and attention, although they were clean it was clear they are well used.

The biggest downside for us was that the site was largely left to manage itself which meant that there were large group bookings. One of which was playing relatively loud music (presumably it was some sort of celebration) until midnight - it wasn't ideal when you've got kids you're trying to get to sleep.

From the manager: Thanks very much for your review. We are so pleased that you liked the staff, showers and food van.

We are always updating the site, such as adding the sink with running water to the Pond Field and a shower will also be in the field soon. The Farm Field toilets are due for works at the end of the season. They are attended regularly to make sure they are fully stocked and clean.
We find that most campers enjoy the option of where to camp, rather than having set pitches.
I am sorry to hear that someone did not adhere to our stringent rules on noise. I myself was in the field at 11pm when quiet hours commence and I could not hear the music. I can assure you that staff are on duty 24hrs a day and if your concern was raised when on site, we would've dealt with it swiftly. We are a family campsite first and foremost.
I am sorry that you feel that you needed to wait until writing a review to voice your worries, rather than speaking with us- we are very understanding and approachable!

All the best and kind regards.

Farm Field primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Family friendly even thought we just booked as 2 adults, clean and the showers are huge.
Great it has a food & drinks are which we didnt use but saw others.
Great stay to try out a new local site.

Disliked Ii was a bit shocked driving in to feel it felt like a scrap yard, but realised it was old tractors and a jet engine, pallets of bricks etc, just seemed a bit odd really. htne turned into the field which was spacious.

Farm field primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Easy to find with google maps. Very straight forward and nice check in service. The field was very clean and tidy and facilities were good. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Disliked Booked the site due to the on site fishing pond. The pond was not in the best condition. We had to access it via a very unkept pathway either down a steep bank through overgrown bushes and grass with no real steps, or hop over a broken section of the perimeter fence to a small bank area.
The site recommends booking the fishing pond in advance and charges per rod but with limited sign posting, broken and unkept fences and a lack of areas around the pond to fish from, I’m not sure where the money goes.
The fishing was one of the reasons I chose this camp site but was also the only thing that let the trip down.

Local attractions

First port of call around these parts simply has to be the excellent Hever Castle (20 minutes' walk or five minutes' drive): the childhood home of Anne Boleyn has plenty of attractions to keep you busy for a full day out, including a water maze, playgrounds and a fab series of summer events including things like jousting tournaments and open-air theatre shows. For a bit more on the local history front, head to Chartwell (15 minutes' drive), a long-term haunt of Winston Churchill, or to Penshurst Place (10 minutes), where you can tour the medieval manor or trot around the estate's 100 acres, taking in the lakes, adventure playground and woodland trails along the way. More of the past is on display in Chiddingstone (five minutes), a well-preserved Tudor village managed by the National Trust. Need something to keep the kids entertained? Edenbridge (10 minutes) has a well-maintained public leisure centre nearby if they've got excess energy to burn off, while trips to top local theme parks like Diggerland Kent (55 minutes) or zoos like the UK Owl and Raptor Centre (20 minutes) could also be in the offing.
