  • Peaceful site close to the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales
  • Near the M6: 20 minutes' drive to Kendal, Morecambe or Kirkby Lonsdale
  • Dog-friendly site 100 yards from a farm shop and retail village
Can’t choose between the Dales and the Lakes? This conundrum comes up on many a northern break, so here's a site with a nifty location to keep your options open. Strange though it may seem, it turns out that a cracking way to explore national parks in Yorkshire and Cumbria is to settle down on the northern edge of Lancashire. Low Greenlands Holiday Park is in Tewitfield, a peaceful village with perks including canalside walks, miniature golf and fresh farm produce. Although many pass through here on the way to jaunts in the Lakes and Dales, there's plenty to get up to in this part of the world: aquatic adventure is on hand at the local watersports centre (five minutes' drive), while Leighton Moss, a wildlife haven popular with bird-spotters, joggers and sketchers, is also close by (10 minutes). This park makes a convenient base for all manner of stays, whether you're planning on spending your days locally or fancy roaming far and wide. There's a lot to like here, including spacious pitches, hillside views, handy laundry facilities and internet access. The site's pet-friendly rules, meanwhile, are good news for guests travelling with canine companions in tow. When the weather is fine, a good barbecue can't be beat: pick up supplies for alfresco eats at the local farm shop, 100 yards down the road.

What customers say

This is a small, clean, well-kept site with excellent, spotless washrooms. Guests enjoy the quiet, though some find the nearby busy road loud. No on-site amenities, but a pub & farm shop are walkable (along the road with no sidewalk).

Liked Quiet tidy site. Secure as have a coded barrier. Toilet block was clean and heated

Disliked Pitches too close together. All squashed in for maximum return.
Right on busy road where noisy cars drive at speed.
Park map is not accurate, it shows grassy area round caravan but we were realistically close to a hedge

Liked Not too many pitches. Well maintained. Shower block clean.

Disliked The pitches were very close together, didn’t like it being unmanned. The main road was lethal, the sound of the cars kept me awake a lot of the time. The site could consider pushing the council for some sort of speed camera on that road

Liked Toilets, washing up facilities and general site clean and tidy. Music playing in the toilets & washing up area was a nice touch. Friendly owner. We had pitch 8 which was nicely tucked away and a lot more private than the others. Quiet and friendly. Good recycling facilities.

Disliked Pitches all shapes & sizes which left some smaller than others. WiFi didn’t work but we weren’t too bothered. Pitches very close to fast busy road.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Clean toilets and showers, clean site overall. Check in was easy and efficient, close proximity to the wildlife reserve. Communication throughout was great.

Disliked Avoid pitch 7 if you dont want to be surrounded by everyone. We did ask to change but were told that it was because we had a Camper and a car which is understandable. We had noisy neighbours behind us in pitch 8 and 9. Dog barking and another kept wandering off and pooing on our pitch - However, the owner did deal with it straight away and called them. Was told this was the second time the family allowed the dog to do it. They were also big drinkers, and then we had 2 lads next to us who were also part of that group (dont know if owners were aware). Because of this we ended up leaving a night early which was a shame because it was a nice area and the owners were efficient.

Liked The camp was small, clean and had everything we needed. Easy access using the code provided by the site manager in an email. We were the only campers (tent box), so it was really quiet, which was a bonus for us! There were other people staying in the cottage and pods, and we had some lovely conversations!

Disliked We didn’t dislike anything!

(If there were more campers on site, I imagine there would be a queue for the showers and toilets ! One shower and two toilets for each sex … but we had them to ourselves, so we were happy!! 😊)

Liked Handy site for a one night stop over whilst travelling.Good shower and dishwashing/laundry facilities.
Near the canal,Marina and hotel serving food and drinks.

Disliked Some loud traffic noise from cars and motorbikes passing the site driving too fast but it settled down at night.

Liked good location and toilets were clean

Disliked So full disclosure, I didn’t stay! I’ve never done this before but i felt so uncomfortable that i stayed for about half an hour and then made the decision to leave and go elsewhere.

When I arrived there were three or four large vans and dance music blaring out (when I say dance music, I mean full on rave dance music at volume) and obvious signs that some people were having party on the pitch next to me (empty cans strewn everywhere and crates of beer outside).

I’d already paid so sat for half an hour trying to decide if i was being silly and it was only for one night so could I handle it and i just decided no - I thought about reporting it but when i looked for contact info, I realised that the warden isn’t onsite which made me more uncomfortable. Some may disagree but as a solo female traveller you sometimes just get a vibe and you need to list to the spidey senses, the place didn’t look like the website, it looked a bit run down and the fact there’s essentially no warden just added to it.

It was a bit sickening given the time of night i arrived (around 9pm) and the fact i’d already paid but it was the right decision for me - and it must’ve been bad because I chose to drive about another hour down the road and sleep at a service station instead!

Local attractions

For kid-pleasing times, make Greenlands Farm Village your first port of call (100 yards from site). Miniature golf, a playground, archery and cuddly farm animals are all on the cards here (there's also a garden centre, restaurant and well-stocked farm shop for grownup guests). For a family-friendly day at the beach, head to Morecambe Bay (20 minutes' drive), where adventurous types can sort watersports and fishing adventures. Green-fingered guests heading up to the Lakes should call in at Levens Hall (15 minutes), a historic house near Kendal with top-notch topiary. Kendal (20 minutes) is an artsy town on the edge of the national park, a leisurely drive from spots like Lake Windermere (15 minutes from Kendal or 25 minutes from site) and Cartmel Fell (25 minutes or 30 minutes). Most trips down to the Dales, meanwhile, will pass through Kirkby Lonsdale, a market town on the river Lune (20 minutes). Stop off here to admire the scenery at Ruskin's View or for a stroll over the Devil's Bridge, or carry on for outdoorsy attractions like Hardraw Force and Malham Cove (both about an hour from site).
