Bowls anyone?

  • Peaceful and remote park 15 minutes' drive from the coast at Southport
  • Under 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Ormskirk
  • Adventure play park, pitch and putt, bar and bowling green
Secluded, well set up for kids and only a 15-minute drive from the fine sands and seaside town of Southport – all sounds like a sure thing for a tiptop family holiday in England's north west. Under 10 minutes' drive from the market town of Ormskirk, Shaw Hall is a family-oriented site among acres of countryside near the small Lancashire village of Scarisbrick. It's within easy driving distance of the Martin Mere wetland centre for nature spotting, birdwatching, and canal boat tours, and a few miles from more of the same via canal rides (and cream teas) on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. As a family site, Shaw Hall is well set up for kids, with an adventure playground, bowling green, pitch and putt, plenty of room to play, and air hockey and pool tables in the bar. A bar with beer garden and takeaway is to hand for food and drink, along with evening entertainment a couple of times a week for grownups. (Please note that some entertainment may incur a charge.) A fully-stocked on-site shop is available daily, too. Among the amenities at the main site (a few minutes' walk from the camping field) are an accessible bathroom block with toilets, hot showers and a parent and baby bathroom; a washing-up area, and a launderette with washing machines and tumble dryers.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Facilities were very good

Disliked There was a lack of supervision. No patrols of the site were evident as as a consequence rules were broken
There were fire pits everywhere, ery loud music, children running round playing football and using sparklers when the grass was very dry.
All this was happening after 2am.
I was just concerned as all the tents were very close and it only takes a flying ember to ignite one of the tents.
There was no evidence of fire extinguishers etc. Overall everyone's safety must come first

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The site was clean, and well maintained, although I did see some dog poop, however this is not the fault of the site but the people who don’t clean up after their pets! And it was cleared up quite quickly.

All the people working there were all polite and helpful, the shop had all the basic necessities, and the lady really lovely.

The location was great, with easy access to both Ormskirk and Southport, a lovely walk along the canal to a pub,
The clubhouse was clean, and the
breakfast was very good,

Good size pitches, mostly level.

Over all a good site.

Disliked The toilets were far away from the pitches, The female toilets were a little more secluded with a few bushed around the entrance, making it a bit unnerving of a night to go alone.
There was only one tap of water for the camping field, serving a full campsite.
I found it a little expensive too at £25 per night, for a pitch with no hook up. While I was meeting up with friends there, I was pitching on my own.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked The lay out of the field and the amenities the R Bar was very good and the entertainment was brilliant.
Straight on the canal for long walks.

Close to Southport and shops

Disliked Disliked the rules not being enforced music and loud talking was on going on well past 3am!

Also you should give campers tags to tie to guide ropes so you know they have paid.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Good price, children's playground on site, good location to local activities

Disliked Very noisy and not policed, asked to sign to comply by the rules to turn music off and be quiet by 11.30 but this was not followed. On one night a group were blasting music and chatting until 5am.

Facilities are a good walk away and there was no hot water for showers or to wash dishes.

On a small field and perhaps too many tent pitches, it felt crowded.

Local attractions

You might want to get straight to the sands first from Shaw Hall, so pile the kids into the car and drive along to the seaside town of Southport, 10 to 15 minutes away, for its beach, botanic gardens and the famed (in some circles) lawnmower museum, the only such establishment in the country. You can also whirl around the fairground rides and attractions of Southport's amusement park, or have a promenade along the town's pier, where views stretch along the coast to Blackpool and north Wales. Elsewhere around the region, have afternoon tea on a scenic 90-minute canal boat tour along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, departing three miles from the site in Halsall, or drift around Marine Lake via pedalo or motorboat rides, seven miles away next to the coast in Southport. Four miles away is the Wetland and Wildlife Trust's Martin Mere reserve for birdwatching, wildlife spotting, boat rides and regular events including toddler days and nature ranger experiences. At nearby Ruff Wood, take the circular walk through 19 acres of mixed woodland filled with oak and silver birch trees. A little further afield are the salt marshes and sandflats of the Ribble Estuary National Nature Reserve, home to more than 250,000 ducks, geese, swans and wading birds; redshanks, skylarks, meadow pipits and linnets during summer; and 16 species of wintering birds.
