If a spot just a few minutes away from both Ulverston and the Cumbria coast sounds like a good place to be (and it surely should…) then you’ll likely be most pleased with the setup at Camping at Hayfield. This pop-up site is part of a family farm, and it’s run by the lovely Beverley and Anthony, a couple who are keen on travelling and exploring and know a thing or two about what makes for a fab place to stay. It’s all about splendid simplicity here: facilities are limited to just portable toilets, showers, a water tap, picnic tables and a cold-water washing-up area, so you can focus on the key elements of a peaceful stay (namely meeting the farm animals, checking out the gorgeous Lake District views and bonding over an evening by the barbecue or campfire…) Look out from the pitches and you’ll see rural views all around, with footpaths easily accessible for when you fancy getting out to see a bit more. Handily it’s about a 20-minute stroll to the local pub, and an even shorter one to an ice cream parlour. For more foodie options (including pubs, takeaways and supermarkets), it’s a five-minute drive up to Ulverston. A countryside site this may be, but as it’s not far from the A590 it’s also one that’s well placed for getting out and about. Some of the biggest sights in the Lake District National Park (including Windermere and Coniston Water) are about 20 minutes away by car, or you can get to Bardsea Beach or South Lakes Safari Zoo in about five minutes.

Liked Great hosts! So welcoming and informative. Loaaaads of space to pitch up - we went for the spot at the top of the hill and had such a mega view (and some lovely neighbors 🐄🐮)
Toilets and showers were well maintained.
Little shop was a great addition - can get snacks as well as the hire of a fire pit.

Primitive grass RV campsite

Liked The most warmest of welcomes to a lovely large well maintained site/field. Love the quirky refreshments trailer.

The hosts were around often and took the time to speak to us as "would-be" friends rather than paying guests. As far as first impressions go, they cannot get any better than that!

We wanted a windbreak as it was gusty when setting up. Beverley tried hard for us ringing a local shop enquring if they had had any. She offered possible suggestions on where to go but we had no joy. Returning to the site, there was one placed by our pitch complete with mallet left behind by previous guests that they had took time to search for and find. Such a simple gesture but it struck a very positive chord with us.

The facilities are basic; portaloos, showers and cold water washing up area. We love "back to basics" so suited us perfectly. The portaloos are spotless, cleanest I've seen. Back end of the six weeks school holidays and they looked brand new and untouched.

We loved our time here; simple, charming, clean and scenic - we will make a point of returning.

Thank you Beverley and Anthony, it was such a pleasure to meet you both.

Disliked Going home.

You’ll be sitting just south of the Lake District National Park here, so naturally lots of gorgeous walks and other outdoor activities are within easy reach. Family attractions too: places like South Lakes Safari Zoo (five minutes’ drive) and the Lakes Aquarium (20 minutes) are always popular with the youngsters. Other attractions that are likely to find favour with all ages include the classic cars and other vehicles at Lakeland Motor Museum (15 minutes), the steam trains of Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway (15 minutes) and the sculpture trail and Go Ape adventure park at Grizedale Forest (half an hour).
