Large pitches in spring

General

  • Friendly park in south Cumbria's Furness peninsula
  • A mile from Ulverston
  • Large play area for kids and a pond

You'll likely like the Furness peninsula in south Cumbria. First up, as its name might imply, it juts into the sea (you probably like sea). And much of it is in the Lake District (you may also like). And it has the island of Walney, and it borders Windermere, and has miles and miles of coastline to dive into – if you've any sense you'll very much like all these things too.

And on the peninsula, sheltered within a former quarry, is friendly family-run Bardsea Leisure Park. It's a well-regarded and popular place only a mile from the market town of Ulverston, eight from Windermere and less than four from wild days out at the South Lakes Wild Animal Park.

The toilet and shower blocks are roomy and with underfloor heating (you may also like); the site also has a launderette, a washing-up area, a big play area with pond, a dog exercise area, and a large accessory shop and service centre. Wifi is available for an additional charge.

And another exemplary thing about Bardsea Leisure Park? It's open all year round for winter beach walks and frosty lakeside hikes – something else you might very much like.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

    Friendly neighbours
Peaceful site , very little traffic noiseound

    Disliked:

I truly thought other negative reviews were probably from disgruntled people BUT no signage for reception and when I found Reception, after an encounter with a disgruntled employee, Reception sent me to an occupied pitch as booking board was not up to date . It would take so little to put up a temporary Reception sign and get properly organised re allocation of tourer sites . I did take this up with a receptionist on leaving . How hard can it be to get this right and then get good reviews as so much to like about the site .

The only toilet block that was open was at the top of the site, but was very nice. They were individual wet rooms very modern and clean.

    Disliked:

The vans on the site were very close together both statics and tourers we found that we were looking into someone else's windows and vice versa. It is a very commercial site with caravan sales at the front. The site was not to busy due to time of year, but would probably get very noisy in high season. This is not my usual type of site but served as a convenient base.

    fully serviced pitch

    Disliked:

where do I start, what is the point of giving the dimensions for the caravan and awning to be shoved on a pitch which is too short, my A frame stuck out into the access road which is very narrow, then expected to park my car in front, stupid. the touring pitches are very cluttered, with only about seven foot between my awning and the next van, in my opinion a fire hazard. There was a static caravan looming over my pitch, no privacy. Most of the toilets were closed, I was informed it was for hygiene over covid 19, which I accept, but there was no shortage of cleaners for the caravans for sale. Promoted as dog friendly, rubbish, no dog walks, just an area no bigger than the average back garden, which is accessed by a flight of uneven, unlit, slippery steps. On booking in the allocation system appears to be a whiteboard, which they just rub one name off and put yours on. I was a little wary of booking having read some of the reviews, however, gave it the benefit of the doubt, too my cost. Speaking to other caravanners it is commonly overbooked which quite honestly does not surprise me at all. I am not a fussy caravanner, but, Bardsea fell well below what I would expect for the price

Local attractions

A cosy dip first: a swimming pool as well as an indoor/outdoor sports complex is 300 metres from Bardsea Leisure Park. Once refreshed, wander into the handsome market town of Ulverston for old buildings, cobbled streets and the Thursday and Saturday street markets selling fresh local produce. (An indoor market is open weekly too.)

A prettily landscaped 18-hole golf course is also in the area, but if you're feeling particularly energetic you might be up for a climb up Hoad Hill and the Sir John Barrow Monument from Ulverston's north east.

The tigers, giraffes, kangaroos, lemurs, monkeys and more of the South Lakes Animal Park safari park are towards Barrow-in-Furness, as is the Dock Museum, a free attraction (often with special exhibitions) telling the story of Barrow as a shipbuilding town.

Off the peninsula, visit Walney Island and its nature reserve, or Roa Island to get the ferry over to the island of Piel. And if you're off to Windermere, go via the restored steam trains of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway to travel through the Lake District's sterling scenery and board a lake cruise at the end of your journey.

Must see

  • South Lakes Wild Animal Park (5.9 kilometers)
  • Holker Hall and Gardens (6.7 kilometers)
  • Lakeland Motor Museum (10.7 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Dalton Castle (7.2 kilometers)
  • Cartmel Priory Gatehouse (8.8 kilometers)
