Looking for a lush location to settle down in while exploring Lakeland? Step foot in the family-run Setmabanning Caravan Park, then step off site towards top spots like Keswick and the Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes’ drive). This site really is very easy on the eye: it’s got spectacular views of Blencathra and the surrounding fells, making it fab for frolicking about the Lake District (or just having a bit of R&R in a rural bolthole). During a break here, the more energetic among your travel crew could tackle the Blencathra, Skiddaw and Helvellyn ranges, all within about a 20-minute drive, while strollers seeking easier trails might prefer the pretty footpaths and cycle tracks around the local valley and towards Keswick. Sticking to the site is always an option too – being a working farm, there’s lots to see and do, whether it’s watching the sheep being sheared and the cows going out into the fields with their calves or feeding the chickens and ducks as they wander by. When it comes to filling your own stomach, it’s a 25-minute walk to the centre of the nearest village, Threlkeld, which has two country pubs serving Cumbrian food and ales. Meals are also to be had at the golf club, and the Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum (10 minutes) is worth a quick nosey around as well.

Nestled on a working farm with gorgeous views, this spot features roomy, flat sites with great water/electric. Perfect for walks and cycles, close to Keswick and pubs. The well-stocked honesty shop is a hit! Some find the basic showers/toilets dated, but they're clean, functional, and have good hot water.

Liked I loved the space for each van - loads of room, electric and water on the pitch too (saved filling the water tank up).
There was a great walk path right by the site, so to arrive at 6 and take the dog a 30 minute walk before dark. The farm shop had loads of lovely gifts as well as essentials and could pay by card or cash.

Disliked The showers were a walk away, but great to enjoy the fresh air. Hot water was HOT - beware! Took a while to get the right shower temperature. Unsure where the bins were, but took a guess they were the big red Biffa bins near the showers.

Liked Nice spacious pitches, close to the railway path to Keswick which was great for biking.
Honesty shop is a nice touch. 20min walk to two nice pubs.

Disliked Such a shame the washroom facilities let this place down. The toilet block is in desperate need of an upgrade, or even a clean would be a good start, probably the worst we’ve been to on a site. Just pleased we had our own facilities to use.
Electrics on pitch couldn’t cope with the kettle and the fridge on together, had to switch about to use appliances.

Local attractions

The site is on a cycle path leading to Keswick, so you could either drive to town (10 minutes) or ride there by bike. Once you’ve arrived, have a left-of-field hour or so learning about the history of pencils at the Derwent Pencil Museum before gazing at artefacts dug up from around Lakeland in the Keswick Museum & Art Gallery. Just on the outskirts of town is the Castlerigg Stone Circle, dating back as far as the Neolithic area; check this historic spot out, then trudge up to the 2,848-foot Halls Fell Top at the peak of Blencathra. The mighty mountain ranges of Skiddaw (20 minutes’ drive) and Helvellyn (10 minutes) are also local to the site if you’re up for another hiking challenge. As you’re in the Lake District, you’ll surely want to be inspecting some of the area’s bodies of water too. The closest to Keswick is Derwent Water (15 minutes) – ace for boat trips around the Theatre by the Lake – but Thirlmere (10 minutes) and Ullswater (20 minutes) are within easy reach as well.
