General

  • Working farm site in the Lake District with stunning fell views
  • Just off the A66 road in Threlkeld, a 10-minute drive from Keswick
  • Blencathra, Skiddaw and Helvellyn ranges within 20-minute drive

Looking for a lush location to settle down in while exploring Lakeland? Step foot in the family-run Setmabanning Caravan Park, then step off site towards top spots like Keswick and the Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes’ drive).

This site really is very easy on the eye: it’s got spectacular views of Blencathra and the surrounding fells, making it fab for frolicking about the Lake District (or just having a bit of R&R in a rural bolthole).

During a break here, the more energetic among your travel crew could tackle the Blencathra, Skiddaw and Helvellyn ranges, all within about a 20-minute drive, while strollers seeking easier trails might prefer the pretty footpaths and cycle tracks around the local valley and towards Keswick.

Sticking to the site is always an option too – being a working farm, there’s lots to see and do, whether it’s watching the sheep being sheared and the cows going out into the fields with their calves or feeding the chickens and ducks as they wander by.

When it comes to filling your own stomach, it’s a 25-minute walk to the centre of the nearest village, Threlkeld, which has two country pubs serving Cumbrian food and ales. Meals are also to be had at the golf club, and the Threlkeld Quarry & Mining Museum (10 minutes) is worth a quick nosey around as well.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 25 or over.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 6 or more people are not permitted.

This is a small site with large, very well equipped and finished gravel pitches with full services. There are no facilities here so if you're looking for bars and shops, this site set for you. But it's right next to a working farmhouse with cows, horses and geese and tucked away from the road in a quiet location. A great site for exploring the Lakes and a short drive from Keswick, Grasmere, Ambleside and Windermere. Highly recommended.

Lovely large pitch that was fully serviced. All hard standing too so no mud! Great location for Keswick and short walk to Threlkeld for a drink or meal in the pub.

    Disliked:

Some areas of the touring part could do with a bit of tidying up as not all of the site is sectioned into walled pitches.

Lovely scenery and great place for the kids to explore. The family hosts were very friendly and accommodating and more than happy to chat about the farm. The kids loved seeing all the animals and exploring the grounds. Nice quiet site and perfect for our large motorhome. Cannot comment on the facilities as they were closed due to COVID. We also used our own WiFi router and got an excellent signal.

Absolutely loved it . Nature, farm animals, walks. Suited myself and hubby plus our two Yorkies down to the ground. Bats clicking and flying around were a special treat. Beautiful scenery. Very friendly place to stay, would definitely return for a future visit

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike but facilities were closed due to COVID restrictions. Didn’t really affect us as we had hot water and shower in caravan.

Quads buzzing around the site till very late at night and first thing in morning, along with barking sheepdogs made for a very unsettled sleep (it’s a very busy working farm, and I am a farmer myself so I understand why they were so busy)

Local attractions

The site is on a cycle path leading to Keswick, so you could either drive to town (10 minutes) or ride there by bike. Once you’ve arrived, have a left-of-field hour or so learning about the history of pencils at the Derwent Pencil Museum before gazing at artefacts dug up from around Lakeland in the Keswick Museum & Art Gallery.

Just on the outskirts of town is the Castlerigg Stone Circle, dating back as far as the Neolithic area; check this historic spot out, then trudge up to the 2,848-foot Halls Fell Top at the peak of Blencathra. The mighty mountain ranges of Skiddaw (20 minutes’ drive) and Helvellyn (10 minutes) are also local to the site if you’re up for another hiking challenge.

As you’re in the Lake District, you’ll surely want to be inspecting some of the area’s bodies of water too. The closest to Keswick is Derwent Water (15 minutes) – ace for boat trips around the Theatre by the Lake – but Thirlmere (10 minutes) and Ullswater (20 minutes) are within easy reach as well.

Must see

  • Castlerigg Stone Circle (3.2 kilometres)
  • Cars of the Stars Motor Museum (5.6 kilometres)
  • Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens (9.4 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Grasmere and Great Langdale (19.6 kilometres)
