  • Quiet four-acre adults-only site half a mile from the Sandstone Trail
  • A five-minute drive from Bickerton Hill and 25 minutes from Chester
  • Barbecues permitted; cold water point available; a few pubs nearby
After somewhere quiet to prop your feet up between long walks? Sure thing – Bickerton Sandstone Trail Campsite has it sorted. The peaceful site is in rural Cheshire five miles from Malpas, half a mile from the Sandstone Trail and 25 minutes from Chester’s historical centre. So, that’s your trail sorted too… and a big cluster of historical sites, like a Roman amphitheatre, city walls and The Shambles. As a relaxing rural retreat, Bickerton Sandstone Trail Campsite is a basic site for adults only. Dogs have the green light, excellent news for all those who can’t bear to tackle a trail without their trusty sidekick. The four-acre lawn on site is well-maintained (only tents are allowed). There are just simple facilities there, including a toilet, a hot power shower and a cold-water point. Please note that this is a small site that does not provide toilet roll. All litter must be taken home with you. Barbecues have the go-ahead here too, so feel free to put your cooking skills to the test. Handily, there are a couple of farm shops within 10 minutes’ drive of the site if you want to hook yourself up with some fresh meat for the grill. Bickerton Hill, a National Trust site, is just five minutes’ drive away from the site. This wildlife haven links up to the Sandstone Trail, but get to the trail even quicker if you like, as it runs by half a mile away from the site too. No need to search high and wide for a pub to rest up in after you’ve finished your activities for the day. Conveniently, there are several pubs within five minutes’ drive of the site.

What customers say

This adults-only site is praised for its peace, quiet, and spacious pitches in beautiful gardens. Guests love the friendly owner, Tim, and the super clean, powerful showers. While facilities are basic but adequate for most, a few noted missing washing-up sinks, toilet paper, and hand soap. Despite minor issues like sticky toilet doors and cobwebs, it's a hidden gem many want to revisit.

Liked Great big field spacious pitches, very peaceful souroudings, had great nights sleep as so quiet, friendly owner

Disliked Toilet and shower facilities are in wooden garden sheds, could do with a good sweep out and mop, no soap dispenser or paper towels to dry your hands also bring toilet roll and a mirror as there aren't any

Liked Absolutely beautiful little quiet gem of a camping area, dog friendly which is a must for us! We are dog lovers so take her everywhere. The quiet setting was beautiful and really helped us relax after a hard week at work. We already rebooked here because the location was perfect and a cafe and pub nearby dog friendly again! Lovely for couples to enjoy as adults only

Disliked Only one thing id say I struggled to close the better bathroom shed door! Could do with a trim off the bottom of the door or a handle indoors to pull easier than the wood frame.

The other toilets floor was squishy with water and needs the rubber floor doing like the newer toilet. However I just used to newer toilet in the end with my partner helping me close the door shut.

Liked I liked absolutely everything about this site, the location was remote enough to feel like I was in the countryside yet close enough to nearby supermarkets etc. The site itself is immaculately kept, the gardens stunning and the owner helpful and friendly. As a solo female camper safety is paramount for me, so the security gate onto the field was appreciated.

Disliked My only gripe was the cobwebs in the toilet, they were pretty well established (!) and it made me wonder how often they are cleaned. The loos themselves were clean, but just a suggestion!!!!

Liked Tim met us on arrival, he was friendly and helpful. Large camping site with electric point ( I like my comfort now I'm getting old) WC facilities were always spotless, there's a place to wash your dishes with hot and cold water.
There robotic lawnmowers about the site to keep the grass areas perfectly clear with hardly any loose grass blades about.
It's perfectly placed to visit places of interest, attend festivals or if your just after a quiet place to relax.
We will definitely be back to this little gem of a place.
Thank you Tim for opening up this site

Disliked Nothing at all. It's perfect 👌

Local attractions

Wild swims to wake you up in the morning? No problem. Alderford Lake (15 minutes’ drive) is a swimming lake where you don’t just have to breaststroke… it also has an aqua park and watersports rental. Alternatively, get the fresh air whizzing past your ears from Wrenbury (15 minute), where there’s canal boat rental. Fully awake now, you might feel like a little trip back in time, so to say. The 19th-century gardens at Cholmondeley Castle Gardens (five minutes) now have sweet creatures like llamas and pygmy goats, while Bolesworth Castle (10 minutes) and Beeston Castle (15 minutes) various have exhibitions and events. You might feel like a lord or lady after leaving Erddig (half an hour), a National Trust country house and estate with family collections. The same goes for Chirk Castle (40 minutes), a medieval fortress. Of course, Chester (25 minutes) is chock-full of Roman sites. Chester Zoo (35 minutes), outside of the city, has heaps of animals – it’s a family-friendly day out indeed.
