Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from the site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. There is also a shop on site selling a few essentials and lots of treats. Pick up a pint of milk, a bottle of wine, meat from the Castle Howard butcher or a tasty cake on site. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this family-friendly park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups and/or youngsters let off a little steam. It's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. While there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here, active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills National Landscape come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails. Guests also get two-for-one entry to the Castle Howard grounds, gardens and arboretum, all within walking distance.

Liked Nice sheltered hard standing pitch, great communication by owners. Lovely location handy for Flamingoland.

Disliked Showers were a bit of a chore, constant clicking of switch and varying temperatures.
Partner said the gents could do with a good clean, expected at end of season.

Disliked Pricing where a large tent, vehicle and 6 plus people can share a camping pitch for 24£ yet a cyclist with a one man tent wasn't allowed to share a pitch with another cyclist with a one man tent because of 'health and safety'. We had to buy TWO pitches.
We were then directed to a field with no marked pitches and told, 'pitch wherever you want'
No provision for phone charging.
Lack of waste bins.

From the manager: Hello! Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. It's good to know that our receptionist was welcoming.
The permission granted for the unallocated camping field is based on pitches, not the number of people or the size of the tent. If the number of tents is exceeded we would be breaking our licence agreement and this is why it is not possible to have two or more small tents on one pitch. Having 'unallocated' space means that families and friends can get together to enjoy their camp even when the field is at its 'tent' capacity.
Reception will happily charge your phones during opening hours if asked.
Our rubbish bins are all located on the exit driveway away from the areas which are inhabited by guests. This is because our rural locality has an abundance of wildlife. Not only can bins attract wildlife but we are of the opinion that they are a blot on this beautiful landscape.

We appreciated the lovely location.

Disliked Many things are really helpful when cycle touring/camping, such as shorter grass, a few picnic benches around the field, a bin and another tap in the field. Also a socket to charge a phone in the toilet block would be really helpful. Most other campsites offer a backpacker rate which has been much appreciated. It was a pricey night for a small patch of long grass, but we had a lovely time, cycle camping with friends.

Health and safety doesn't allow electric sockets in wet areas for obvious reasons but phones are able to be charged in the reception building during opening hours.
The bins are positioned away from the pitches on purpose as waste attracts wildlife and bins are also a blot on this beautiful landscape. We hope to see you again.

Liked Nice campsite and peacefull. Pitch size was excellent. Nice walks around the grounds and close to major towns.

Disliked Toilet facilities were ok, water not hot and the sinks were very high. The toilet facilities were small and would be busy during the high season.

Regarding wi-fi, our FAQ's, which can be read before booking, state that we have no wifi. Some guests enjoy being 'off grid' but we understand this doesn't suit everyone. However there is free wifi throughout the grounds of Castle Howard just 1 mile away.

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
