Pitching up by a lake's a plus in more ways than one – as well as being an instant de-stresser, waterside surrounds can be a prime spot for fishing and, in the summer, ever-so-soothing boat trips. If you like the sound of that, hotfoot it down to Castle Howard Lakeside Holiday Park for views over Yorkshire’s poshest country estates. Fancy a stroll close to the water's edge? Go and seek out sweet and savoury goodies at the nearby café and farm shop (a mile away from the site) – the latter can rustle up a nifty breakfast or barbecue pack that you can pick up on your arrival. There is also a shop on site selling a few essentials and lots of treats. Pick up a pint of milk, a bottle of wine, meat from the Castle Howard butcher or a tasty cake on site. The site's non-watery parts are also pretty splendid – this family-friendly park has a dedicated dog-walking area where you can admire mature trees while the pups and/or youngsters let off a little steam. It's also got handy practical features like smart loos and showers and a laundry room. While there's plenty of scope for sticking to the estate during your time here, active off-site jaunts around the Howardian Hills National Landscape come highly recommended, too – the surrounding area's full of cycle paths, bridleways and hiking trails. Guests also get two-for-one entry to the Castle Howard grounds, gardens and arboretum, all within walking distance.

Liked Lovely site. Fabulous location and friendly vibe. Great that entry to Castle Howard was discounted. Would definitely stay here again.

Disliked Showers and toilets quite far from camping field. No access to Castle Howard via Lake path. Could do with a few more things on site for example kids play park, coffee vending machine.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked Beautiful location and great friendly staff. Pitched as a group of 4no. Couples, non-allocated pitches allowed us to camp together. Nicely stocked shop and lovely customer service.

Disliked Little bit of a walk to the shared amenities. Camping field due to non-allocated pitches by the end of Saturday was a little bit disorganised. Try and get there early to get an optimum location.

Liked Clean showers & toilets

Disliked Lack of care with the lake and fishing. Had an algae bloom, no fishing pegs and the lake has been left to go wild with 5ft rushes ruining it. Very disappointed seeing how abandoned it looks now, when compared to how it used to be kept when I was a child... Also algae wouldn't be an issue if the water had an aerator fitted. Also a small play area for kids would definitely enhance the campsites appeal to families.

Yorkshire folk are rightly proud of 'God's Own Country' – it's home to some of the finest historic houses, coast and countryside around. If you want to keep things local, head out to Kirkham Abbey (15 minutes' drive) to visit the ruins of the priory or for waterside strolls along the Derwent river. Like to be beside the seaside? Of course you do, and luckily this area has plenty of options to choose from. If you fancy venturing to Whitby's harbour and beaches, drive to Pickering (25 minutes) and hitch a ride on a steam train for a stonkingly scenic journey over the North York Moors. Bempton Cliffs Seabird Centre (an hour away) is a rather wilder beauty spot – this nature hub is home to about a quarter of a million nesting seabirds (so be sure to pack your binoculars). Art, architecture and landscaped grounds can all be rather moreish, so check out other historic houses in the area, like Nunnington Hall (20 minutes), Duncombe Park (25 minutes), Sledmere House (30 minutes) and Beningbrough Hall (40 minutes), if you fancy a change of scene on your blue-blooded escapades.
