  • Well-maintained site in scenic Yorkshire countryside
  • A five-minute drive from local village; 35 to Scarborough; 45 to York
  • Within 20 minutes' drive of the North York Moors; playground on site
‘The course of true love never did run smooth, but breaks at Midsummer Caravan and Camping do’ … is what Shakespeare probably would have said if he’d ever stayed at this site five minutes’ drive from pretty Yorkshire village Thornton-le-Dale and 10 minutes from Malton. This is camping at its most peaceful. Not only is the site in scenic countryside, but it is also has a children's playground and lots of open green space. Low noise rules apply between 10.30pm and 8am to make sure that staying here is a pleasant experience for all. Dog parents can certainly bring their furry kid along for the trip (although no more than one dog is allowed per pitch), and there’s a large field alongside the River Syme for walkies if cabin fever sets in. If riverside strolls don’t quite cut it, the site’s well placed for longer jaunts: there are a handful of signposted circular walks of varying lengths around Thornton-le-Dale, and North York Moors National Park is less than 20 minutes away for lengthier and more challenging hikes, as well as cycle trails, horse riding and gliding.

What customers say

Clean, level pitches and great facilities (hot showers, play area) are a hit! Perfect Yorkshire base for exploring Scarborough, Whitby & the Moors. Minor gripes: occasional odd-tasting water (new owners addressing), vague arrival signage, and guest noise.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We visited this campsite last year & really enjoyed our stay so thought we would visit again. It's a safe campsite for children to play freely, spacious pitches, clean facitilies and usually friendly people to chat too.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Cleanliness of everywhere on the site. It is immaculate, pitches are a good size with gravel hard standing and then a grass area for your awning. Electricity and water on each pitch.
Centrally located between two great ice cream places as well!
The relaxed pace and the most gorgeous sunsets.
Great showers and toilet blocks, hot water a plenty.
Interactions with owners rapid and courteous. So good we stayed two nights more than we had planned!

Disliked Not a dislike but a laundry facility would be useful please.
No wifi.

Powered cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite

Liked Nice clean quiet campsite. Arrived phoned the number spoke to the lady who said pick your own pitch which I did. All the amenities were clean did not use as self sufficient. I walked to Thornton le Dale which only took about 50 mins which I spent the day there before heading back. Good amount of space & good sized pitches.

Disliked No dislikes. But the sat nav took me to the wrong farm. I realised this did a u turn carried on a bit further where you could see the flags down the drive to the campsite. I had this once before at another farm site but no dramas.

Local attractions

What’s a holiday without sea, sand and (hopefully) sun? Luckily, no one has to find out here: the site’s 35 minutes’ drive from sandy stretches at the seaside resort towns of Scarborough and Whitby, so be sure to pack bucket, spade and (for the brave) a swimming cossie for when beach days beckon. There’s more to both than splashing about too. History buffs may be drawn to Whitby, where Bram Stoker was inspired to create some of Dracula’s integral scenes and where the stunning Whitby Abbey sits, waiting to be explored. Down the coast, Scarborough has a castle, museums, golf courses and gardens, as well as the Scarborough Fair Collection of showman’s engines. For more vintage vibes, time stays to coincide with the monthly Mattewsons Classic Car Auction (check dates before travelling), then spend the rest of your break touring stately homes: Scampston Hall and Gardens is 15 minutes away, Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall and Gardens are both within 50 minutes, and the stunningly cinematic Castle Howard is just 20 minutes from the site. As there are no kids to take care of, you can feel free to spend a few hours touring the Great Yorkshire Brewery (20 minutes' drive) and the Spirit of Yorkshire single-malt whisky distillery (40 minutes) – and picking up a tipple for later – before heading into York (45 minutes) for a night on the town.
