  • A 12-acre wildlife haven under 10 minutes’ drive from Pocklington
  • A 20-minute drive from York and half an hour from Castle Howard
  • Alpaca walks available; in a good stargazing area
It's lovely and remote at The Darling Woods Of May, a site set within 12 acres of wild woodland, meadows and alpaca paddocks in East Yorkshire. A wildlife haven on a small working alpaca farm, the site is just a 20-minute drive from historic York when you fancy re-visiting civilisation for some sightseeing, shopping or other everyday activities. For all your eating out and shopping needs, it's less than a 10-minute drive from the beautiful market town of Pocklington. It’s also on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, where there are some very nice walks to go on and, of course, stunning scenery to soak in. Home to friendly alpacas, The Darling Woods Of May can arrange alpaca walks and experiences for an additional fee (just note that dogs aren’t allowed due to their presence). Being quite remote, the farm is an excellent spot for stargazing. Should you want to take something home to remember your trip by, there's also a small gift shop on site.

This peaceful campsite is loved for its roomy, well-spaced sites and super clean facilities. Guests rave about the friendly, welcoming owners and the onsite alpacas. The natural woodland setting and calm vibe offer a relaxing, "back to basics" experience with nice extras. Most guests loved it, with only minor notes on recycling bins being full and no paper towels.

Primitive grass tent campsite (wild)

Liked Really is being in woods.
No cars in the actually camping area.
Large spaces between tents.

Disliked Nothing really. May be hot water in the washing up area would be good

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. So pleased you enjoyed your stay! As an off-grid site, we work hard to balance providing comfort while keeping things sustainable. We do have a lovely hot shower available, but unfortunately we’re unable to provide hot water in the washing up area. In the past, taps were often left running which meant we simply couldn’t keep up with the cost of gas needed to supply it. We really appreciate your understanding, and hope you enjoyed the peaceful, low-impact experience our site offers!

Primitive grass tent campsite (wild)

Liked Beautiful site. The alpacas were fantastic and the woodland walk with Harry Potter wicker statues and a secret lending library was a wonderful surprise. The site itself was spacious and each plot was private. Sophie was a lovely host, too - so friendly.

Disliked Absolutely nothing.

Primitive grass tent campsite (wild)

Liked Secluded, felt exclusive, well-spaced-out pitches, funny welcome letter, accessible alpacas, little features everywhere to make the space special, quiet, friendly, clean facilities.

Disliked Fire pit hire and wood charge doubled the price of the pitch. Noisy tractors at night but it was harvest time.

From the manager: Hi Tom, thanks for staying - really pleased you enjoyed your stay. We really liked the picture your son drew for us and the lovely note you left us too! Unlike most campsites - we have no rule about bringing your own fire pit or logs which is explained clearly at the booking stage. All the best, Sophie and Simon

Primitive grass tent campsite (wild)

Liked Oh my gosh, what a magical place. So peaceful and with lovely big pitches. Each pitch has a picnic bench and large parasol which was ideal for the June heatwave we had!

The toilets were very clean, I didn't use the shower but it looked very nice and someone we spoke to said it was good and hot.

Alpaca meet and greet was a real treat, they're so lovely!

Disliked No hot water at the washing up point or in the toilets

Primitive grass tent campsite (wild)

Liked Clear communications, Easy check in, spacious car park& pitch sites.
Facilities just perfect and fit for purpose from the trolleys to take your belongings to your pitch to the toilet & shower unit.
Site & pitches well kept with your own bit of meadow land providing privacy between pitches - nice touch and of course the resident alpacas which are great to watch.
