  • Well-maintained site a 10-minute drive from the Suffolk coast
  • A 15-minute drive to Southwold, and half an hour from Sutton Hoo
  • Pub five minutes' drive away; a few minutes from a shop and petrol
Fancy some downtime exploring rural Suffolk? The tree-shaded pitches at Hill Farm are in a peaceful setting near the historic town of Saxmundham, handily accessible from the A12 and close to Suffolk’s popular coastline. This is a site that welcomes families and groups of friends – and it's wonderfully dog-friendly too (there’s a four-acre woodland to the north of the site that's great for dog walking). The site has good TV reception for relaxing indoors on damp or chilly days. Raised gas-powered or charcoal/wood barbecues are allowed too (no ground or silver barbecues please), so you can keep warm and toasty while grilling up a barbecue feast. A pub in Darsham village is a five-minute drive away (or half an hour's walk along a farm track through the fields). The nearest shop is at the local petrol station, a few minutes' drive away (near to the Darsham train station). There's also a good local bakery a few minutes' drive away along the A12. The popular village of Westleton (10 minutes’ drive) has village stores, a farm shop, a garage and an art gallery. Back on site, there are several toilet blocks with hot running water, plus four showers. There is also a washing machine, grey waste and chemical toilet disposal and recycling.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked I had a wonderful 2 night stay at Hill Farm. The campsite is quaint and not overly busy, and although there are other campers on site its quiet easy to forget and immerse yourself in the beauty of the place.

The pitches are lovely and personal and you're not jammed in close together like sardines.

There are ample toilets and showers and other camping facilities dotted around the site not far from the pitches, so the midnight jaunt to the toilet isn't a two mile hike like in other campsites.

Jaik and Jeff were particularly welcoming. Would definitely return!

Disliked Nothing!

Good site would definitely stay again

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked I arrived just before my time. No one was to be found but the details set out in the instructions made it very easy to find my pitch. The pitch itself was a little rough underfoot but its location on the site was perfect for me. It was nestled in between some trees a perfect spot for watching the sun set in peace and quiet. Later in the afternoon I met the owner who was friendly and approachable. It had everything I needed on site; toilet, shower, washing up facilities and electric hook up. As a solo female I felt safe and comfortable, some of the regulars there were friendly and happy to help with any questions I had.

Disliked I wasn’t keen on how rough the ground was or the fact I had to add an extension to the electric hook up. Saying that you get what you pay for.

Very quite site. The owner was very approachable.

Primitive grass and earth campsite

Liked 45% shade for most pitches, level, spacious, easy to find, no queuing for several clean showers and toilets, a friendly and helpful host, lots of tables chairs and toys around the site, a mile from a good pub cum restaurant and a Budgen's supermarket. Good value. No idea why it's called Hill Farm!

Disliked Slight sound of busy A12 in the background

A good site which we would recommend for a quiet stay.

Powered grass and earth campsite

Liked Pitch size is large, toilets and shower room nice and clean. We liked that our pitch was shaded by trees, and very peaceful. Jake the owner is a lovely guy, and was working hard to maintain the site. Basic facilities, no frills campsite with a very relaxing atmosphere. Friendly campers as neighbours. We will definitely return.

Disliked Honestly can't think of anything we didn't like.

Local attractions

Hills Farm is an great base for exploring the Suffolk coastline, with indie boutiques in cobbled streets and restaurants on the pier in the cute seaside town of Southwold (15 minutes’ drive), and an extensive sandy beach backed by dunes at Walberswick (10 minutes). Aldeburgh (20 minutes) is home to famous literary and music festivals, plus bracing strolls on the pebble beach and a renowned fish and chip shop. There’s plenty of history in these parts too, with stately part-medieval Orford Castle (25 minutes) open for tours of its angular keep, and you can follow a spectacular walk around the walls at Framlingham Castle (20 minutes). The star of the show here, however, might just be the Anglo-Saxon burial ground and museum showcasing its priceless, golden finds at Sutton Hoo (half an hour). Getting out and about in glorious and unspoilt countryside is easy too, with boardwalks crossing the heathland at National Trust-owned Dunwich Heath and Beach (15 minutes). At the famous RSPB Minsmere coastal reserve (20 minutes), you have the chance to spot otters in reedbed pools, with rare bitterns and avocets nesting nearby.
