The Triple Plea Pub and Touring Park: Touring park

General

  • Adults-only, dog-friendly site alongside a 400-year-old pub
  • A 20-minute drive from Southwold and the Norfolk Broads
  • Wooded area for dog walking; bar and restaurant in the pub; near shops

Is it quality time you’re looking for around Southwold, the Norfolk Broads and other top Suffolk and Norfolk spots? The Triple Plea Pub and Touring Park in Suffolk is well-based for it all, 20 minutes’ drive from Southwold and The Broads, with destinations like Norwich, Bury St Edmunds and Great Yarmouth further out.

There’s an adults-only set-up at this place, but dogs are welcome too (kept on a lead at all times and cleared up after, the site requests). The small wooded area at the rear of the site is handy for those shorter dog walks. Of course, the coast and The Broads have more to offer on that front.

How about those post-walk meals, evening ales and cosy conversations by the bar too? Since this site is alongside a dog-friendly 400-year-old pub, guests won’t have any trouble tracking down food fashioned from local produce or beers, wine, larger and two or three types of real ale on tap (on most occasions).

The Triple Plea Pub and Touring Park is based in Halesworth, a pleasant little town with plenty of shops for sourcing snacks and the likes. It’s around 20 minutes’ walk to the centre, and five minutes’ drive to the 190-acre golf course when you fancy teeing off.

On site, facilities include a washing-up room, grey and brown wastewater disposal points, bins for rubbish, glass and recycling, a long freshwater hose and a service point with a wastewater drain. There’s also a toilet block with ladies and gents loos, a good-quality shower and a disabled wet room that includes a toilet and shower, all with underfloor heating.

Nice level pitch, easy access, drive in & out great for motorhomes. Lovely pub with great beer and friendly staff. In the middle of extensive refurbishment for their living quarters.

Near a busy road but we did not notice any real road noise.

Definitely worth visiting as a stop over or a base to explore the lovely Suffolk surroundings. EHU and lovely clean toilets & showers.

Pitches were reasonably sized, facilities were good, although only having 1 shower and WC was a potential issue. The pub was welcoming and drinks were competitively priced, unfortunately restaurant was not open during our stay so can't comment on that. Otherwise, satisfactory.

    Disliked:

Firstly, overnight noise from trucks using the nearby road was not great, causing us some frustration at not being able to sleep (we were in a tent,) and also our departure from the site a day earlier than intended. The smell in the air, possibly from the chemical waste disposal, was strong at times and quite unpleasant. I should add that the pub had only just opened after a refurb so there were some teething problems but otherwise, staff were very friendly and welcoming.

Campsite was not busy (low season). Toilet block was very clean. Electricity supply on every pitch.

    Disliked:

Traffic noise (site is next to a road so this is to be expected). The road was pretty quiet in the middle of the night, but lorries started traveling pretty early in the morning. Tent pitches were furthest away from the toilet block and seemed less flat than those for caravans.

Local attractions

What could your days out look like around here? Boating, canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding or birdwatching on The Broads (20 minutes’ drive) perhaps? Pedalling down the waterside trails there instead? Or taking your binoculars out to go birdwatching around the waterways (or at RSPB Minsmere, 25 minutes’ drive away instead)?

In Southwold (20 minutes), there’s a different scene, including beach huts, a restored Victorian pier with a slot arcade. A short stroll along the river Blyth will get you to a foot ferry that visits Walberswick across the water. In the village, pastimes include crabbing off the riverbanks and bridge or having a nice brew in one of the tea rooms.

Covehithe Beach (20 minutes) is a rather peaceful sandy stretch for a quieter beach day. However, those of you who prefer more action may want to visit Great Yarmouth (45 minutes) instead. Museums, an aquarium and sailing yacht hire are part of the highlight reel in that seaside resort.

An itinerary from this site shouldn’t forget Norwich (45 minutes) either, where there's a medieval cathedral, Norman castle and local history museum… plenty of history to keep you going.

Must see

  • Framlingham Castle (18.7 kilometers)
  • Somerleyton Hall and Gardens (21.2 kilometers)
  • Fritton Lake Country World (22.6 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Orford Ness National Nature Reserve (29.6 kilometers)
  • Elizabethan House Museum (31.1 kilometers)
