Ready for some honest-to-goodness wild camping? With family-friendly pitches in a diverse young woodland with open grassy clearings and mown paths? Right on the outskirts of the pretty Norfolk village of West Dereham? And with the chance to spend your evenings staring into a crackling campfire? If you answer ‘yes’ to all four questions, then Rosehip Wood Wild Camping is the spot for you. Here, you can pitch up at a campsite completely enclosed by fences – kids can roam free-range-style, make dens using branches and explore the 'secret cedar hideaway' – and use the large, flat meadow for recreational games like football and rounders. It's surrounded by trees and lush greenery, so watch out for wild birds and deer, and look forward to the sunset on clear nights. Because of the lack of light pollution, it's possible to observe a night sky full of stars when weather conditions are right. There are stunning long-distance river walks along the relief channel within a 10-minute walk of the site. Alternatively, walks along the River Wissey are less than an hour's walk away along a footpath through local farmland; maps are available on site. As befits proper wild camping, facilities are on the scant side. Two composting loos, mains water and picnic tables are available on the camping field, but there is no hot water for showers and no electricity – be prepared for the latter and pack torches and batteries for any wanderings after dark. Firepits are provided for those cosy campfire evenings, with logs available to buy on site. Handily, Downham Market is only 10 minutes’ drive away, for those times when you need supplies or feel like a pint in one of the town’s historic pubs.

From the manager: We appreciate your feedback, it is a shame that you thought that the woodland pitch was too expensive, because we do also have budget pitches in our meadow which are cheaper. The reason for this is that the woodland is significantly harder to maintain than the meadow.

Liked We had a lovely time at Rosehip woods. Great facilities and the woodland campsite was just perfect. Each pitch had plenty of privacy and after 9:30 all we could hear was the fire crackling and the nature sounds as everyone was so respectful to the 9:30 quiet time. It was the first time ever that our children felt like there was enough at the campsite to keep themselves amused instead of going off site. They flew kites on the recreation field,played football as there was a goal provided,built fairy gardens,did berry picking and lots more. We had the most wonderful family time 🥰

Kids with you? You can take trailer safaris around Watatunga Wildlife Reserve (15 minutes’ drive) to see water buffalo and deer grazing the grasslands; look out for storks and great bustards too. It’s also only 40 minutes by car to Hunstanton South Beach, from where you can take boat trips on amphibious vessels to see seal colonies basking on the shoreline.   There’s plenty to appeal to lovers of heritage too: in summer, you can tour the opulent apartments and manicured grounds at Sandringham Estate (35 minutes). Oxburgh Estate (15 minutes) showcases a medieval manor house complete with a priest’s hole and moat, while at Castle Acre Priory (10 minutes) you can wander round the ruins of the monks’ living quarters, cloisters and a two-storey loo. Historic Downham Market (10 minutes) has handsome Georgian architecture, a lively market on Friday and Saturday, and acts as a gateway to walks, bike rides and boat trips in the Fens. Thetford Forest (20 minutes) is a peaceful spot for family strolls and cycle rides; there are play areas tucked under the trees too.
