  • Wild camping in Norfolk woodland on the edge of West Dereham
  • Ely or King’s Lynn 30 minutes' drive; Old Hunstanton beach 50 minutes
  • Off-grid site with lots of wildlife; shops and pubs 10 minutes’ drive
Ready for some honest-to-goodness wild camping? With family-friendly pitches in a diverse young woodland with open grassy clearings and mown paths? Right on the outskirts of the pretty Norfolk village of West Dereham? And with the chance to spend your evenings staring into a crackling campfire? If you answer ‘yes’ to all four questions, then Rosehip Wood Wild Camping is the spot for you. Here, you can pitch up at a campsite completely enclosed by fences – kids can roam free-range-style, make dens using branches and explore the 'secret cedar hideaway' – and use the large, flat meadow for recreational games like football and rounders. It's surrounded by trees and lush greenery, so watch out for wild birds and deer, and look forward to the sunset on clear nights. Because of the lack of light pollution, it's possible to observe a night sky full of stars when weather conditions are right. There are stunning long-distance river walks along the relief channel within a 10-minute walk of the site. Alternatively, walks along the River Wissey are less than an hour's walk away along a footpath through local farmland; maps are available on site. As befits proper wild camping, facilities are on the scant side. Two composting loos, mains water and picnic tables are available on the camping field, but there is no hot water for showers and no electricity – be prepared for the latter and pack torches and batteries for any wanderings after dark. Firepits are provided for those cosy campfire evenings, with logs available to buy on site. Handily, Downham Market is only 10 minutes’ drive away, for those times when you need supplies or feel like a pint in one of the town’s historic pubs.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite (woodland)

Liked Great little forested site, lots of small pitches with shade and protection from the wind. Odd to say but the fire wood was remarkably dry and clean burning. Owners super friendly :)

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite (woodland)

Liked I loved staying here. Such a lovely place. The little secret hideaway is such a lovely touch!! Juliet is so responsive and Tom sorted my wood, kindling and some wood wool..so helpful. The weather wasn't really on my side at first but that's the uk for you. The compost toilets are immaculate, they're clean and do not smell at all, a little handwashing station in place is perfect.
I loved listening to the tawney owls. I honestly didn't want to leave.

Disliked Having to leave.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite (woodland)

Liked The Place is simply amazing and really peaceful facilities literally walking distance from wherever you park, also easy to find. Tom went out of his way to make sure that the car was safely park he placed some mats on the grass so I could park as close as possible and brought a crate full of firewood. Primitive grass and earth RV campsite (woodland)

Liked As advertised. Small, secluded and wooded site. Nice pitches. Clean compost toilets. Nice, helpful couple who run it. Good amount of firewood for £10. Lovely walks nearby.

Disliked As with any grass pitches, need to be careful not to get stuck if its wet/muddy. Some distant road noise at this time of year (January) on still nights.

Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite (woodland)

Liked I enjoyed the layout of the campsite, with pitches dotted between trees. It offered me some privacy, shade when needed and protection from the wind which I appreciated
Hand washing facilities at the composting loos was also a nice touch
