Are quiet and secluded countryside stays calling? Take a look at By the Red Phone Box, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the Worcestershire market town of Tenbury Wells. Amid meadow grasses on a Teme Valley working farm, this is a top spot for making the most of scenic rural vistas. Views of Clee Hill can be taken in from the site, and a host of lanes, footpaths and bridleways start on site for countryside strolls. The natural setting is enhanced by the free-range cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens, but don’t worry – fencing keeps them within their own area. There's plenty of birdsong to hear on site, and you can borrow wildlife books to identify what you’re hearing – walking maps are available too. The site's also a 20-minute drive away from Wyre Forest, 15 minutes from Go Ape Wyre and 10 minutes from the fishing lakes at Woodston Manor. With nature-filled and eco-friendly breaks being of utmost importance, the site has all the credentials for peaceful getaways with a low carbon footprint, including composting toilets, gas-heated water, solar lighting and a recycling system. The showers, toilets and washing-up area are all found in a lovingly restored horse box, and – a nice touch this – if temperatures drop, you can stay cosy overnight with hot-water bottles provided by the site team. When it comes time for eats, barbecues are welcome on site, and you can pick up bits and bobs from the supermarket in Tenbury Wells. Next door to the site is a pop-up country pub that's open most Fridays from 5pm to 9pm and once a month on Sundays.

Luna bell tent

Liked We booked the Luna bell tent for a family break with none of life's distractions. On arrival, we were amazed at the amount of space we had to ourselves! The tent was set out lovely and the beds were really comfortable. The converted trailer for the shower and toilet facilities were spotless and the shower was hot at all times. The cooking area was covered which was great for the moments we had a bit of rain.

Our favourite of all was the log burner though. On a night the fire roaring, chilling in bed with a book was amazing.

The hosts are really friendly and responsive. They brought extra firewood down for us at our request quickly.

Disliked Nothing to dislike, will be back again!

Only personal recommendation would be some lighting available in the bell tent, wasn't an issue for us as we had brought battery lights with us but may be appreciated by guests.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked We loved the peace and quiet. Listening to birdsong during the day and seeing red kites overhead was wonderful. At dusk we were visited by bats and by night the stars were spectacular. We were even treated to a shooting star show. The other campers were really friendly and there was a great atmosphere on site all weekend. It's fantastic that the site owners limit the number of guests to avoid it becoming overcrowded.

Whilst there is only one shower it's spacious and was clean and tidy during our stay.

The washing up area was adequate and had hot water available, which was an added bonus.

There's so much to do locally too. We visited Stokesay Castle, Ludlow, Tenbury Wells and Croft Castle. We had dinner at The Rose and Crown at Burford and breakfast at Mr Thom's in Tenbury Wells, both of which we can recommend.

This site gives excellent value for money.

Disliked The recycling area was already full to capacity on arrival. We took ours home with us so be prepared for this.

Despite clear signage, other campers used the hot water taps in the toilet and washing up area whilst the shower was in use, which either made the shower go cold or turn off completely.

We are usually staunch supporters of composting toilets. However, we couldn't get on with this one. The separator is supposed to keep yellow waste going into the brown section. However, the yellow section was frequently blocked with sawdust and the brown section was very brown around the rim, which wasn't particularly pleasant. Maybe it's a female anatomy issue but there doesn't seem to be an adequate margin of error to keep the two types of waste separate. There was no sawdust left by the early hours of Sunday morning.

From the manager: We are so pleased you enjoyed the peace and quiet, birdsong. shooting stars and dark sky's, bats and the friendly relaxed atmosphere of out tiny place (just 7 pitches in a 1 acre field)
I'm afraid that although we do our very best to deal with recycling and land fill waste, this is collected alternatively once a week, so if a lot has been deposited already by previous guests then it can be full, we alleviate this by removing and replacing with empty bins, and by providing bin bags for our guests so that they can recyce as much as possible and leave next to the bins for us to deal with. With regards to the loo, we clean it daily - more when the site is busy, however is someone is using it and putting shavings into the diverter we cannot be on site 24 hours a day as we are a working farm and this is a small farm diversification project which allows us to share this stunning part of the world with our guests We rely on our guests to make us aware of the problem, so we can then sort it out

Local attractions

Close to the borders of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire, this site is well-placed for adventures of all kinds. There’s a wealth of nice spots hereabouts, so be sure to cross as many off lists as possible, starting with the museum, swimming pool and shops of Tenbury Wells and the bars, restaurants and brewery of Cleobury Mortimer (both within 10 minutes’ drive). Farther afield, Ludlow (25 minutes) is a must for its castle, market, shops and brewery. Leominster and Kidderminster (both 30 minutes) have even more to entice, from Grange Court and the start of the 40-mile circular Black and White Trail in the former, to the Severn Valley Railway, railway museum and West Midlands Safari Park in the latter. Bigger days out can be had in Hereford (45 minutes), where visitors should wander about the Black and White museum, the waterworks museum and – perhaps most importantly of all – the cider museum. If history is becoming the draw, the site’s within 35 minutes of Great Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Brockhampton, Croft Castle, Hampton Court and Stokesay Castle, and also within 35 minutes of Stockton Bury Gardens, Ralph Court Gardens and Hampton Gardens.
