General

  • Off-grid eco-friendly site on a working farm in the Teme Valley
  • A 30-minute drive from Leominster and Kidderminster
  • Honesty shop on site for local produce; buy meat and eggs at the farm

Are quiet and secluded countryside stays calling? Look no further than By the Red Phone Box, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the Worcestershire market town of Tenbury Wells.

Amid meadow grasses on a Teme Valley working farm, this is a top spot for making the most of scenic rural vistas. Views of Clee Hill can be taken in from site, and a host of lanes, footpaths and bridleways start on site to take rambling guests on countryside strolls. The natural setting is enhanced by the free-range cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens, but don’t worry – fencing ensures they can’t show up at tents unannounced.

If nature-filled and eco-friendly breaks are of importance, the site has all the credentials, including composting loos, gas-heated showers, solar lighting and a recycling system. When temperatures drop overnight, stay cosy with the hot water bottles provided by the site team.

When it comes time for eats, barbecues are welcome on site, and you can get a taste of the surrounding area by visiting the honesty shop (just outside the house) to pick up local jams, preserves, chutneys, honey and apple juice. Condiments sorted, stock up on bulkier fare – sausages, bacon, eggs and (when available) veggies – up at the farmhouse. You can also borrow wildlife books and maps on site.

We had such a lovely weekend! This was our children's first camping trip and we couldn't have asked for better. The field was completely private and well lit at night with pretty fairy lights, and the fire pit. The facilities were exceptionally good, a really comfortable camping experience thanks to the bathroom and the kitchen hut. The bell tent itself was well furnished and we really appreciated little touches like the teddy and hot water bottles.

We stayed in Evelyn and loved the secluded space with hedges all round as the kids were very safe. We booked here because it was no dogs and a quiet site which it was. Own bathroom facilities meant no sharing. We are not into camping at all (prefer luxury cottage) but this was for the kids who loved it and proved suitable for the less keen adult campers. Cooking pans were v good quality -much appreciated. Bed v. comfy. No WiFi was a blessing as removed any arguments on kids iPad time. The kids liked to see the bats at dusk and listen to the owls hoot. We had good weather, played badminton (grass mowed nice and short), cycled, tried goape and visited Witley court.

The glamping tent was excellent with well thought out facilities , an excellent hot shower and a kitchen pod. The bed was really comfortable and although we were initially dubious about the composting toilet it turned out to be great - no problems at all. The kids really enjoyed the fresh air and freedom, especially to light fires! I had the best nights sleep I have had in ages due to copious walks, fresh air and relaxation.

We would highly recommend the cream tea and the sausages also .

Ian and Emma are lovely so your stay here is bound to be lovely. I really liked the honesty shop (£2.50 for lovely apple juice) and the area too. For some reason, I had expected there to be one field with the glamping pods and the tents together, but actually the glamping tents are separate (great for their privacy) so this means that the field you turn into is just for normal tents. Which means that you'll pretty much have the place to yourself which is bliss! There was only one other tent when I was there, and that made it a really nice cosy atmosphere. And you can park your car by your tent - it's just for the glampers that they park as soon as they arrive, and have a short walk with their stuff. The converted horse trailer for the shower, toilet and washing up area was cute. Shower was amazingly hot, so brilliant. Compostable toilet was easy to use, and did not smell at all - I am converted now and look forward to trying out more campsites that use them! I also loved watching hay bales being made - never seen that before so that was fun!

I highly recommend bumbling around Tenbury Wells itself (free parking at the swimming pool) - the chocolatier Mr Tom's is ace, as is the deli The Smiling Goat is good too. I went to The Wyre Forest (bike hire available) & Bewdley for a nice riverside walk (The Kemp Hospice shop is a great warren). My favourite visit though was Witley Court (English Heritage) - I luckily timed it for the fountain turning on at 1pm, definitely worth it. And a must afterwards is a visit to the Garden tearooms next door (follow signs from the church) - it's stunning with great food and cake. It's the kind of place that provides extra hot water as standard when you order tea - love that.

Just a heads up that it's narrow country lanes around, so it's good to feel comfortable driving on single track roads.

    Disliked:

My only preference would be that the charging structure would be per person so that solo travellers are charged accordingly.

My daughter and I went on a motorcycle tour and stayed for two nights on the tent pitch. A beautiful, small and very very quiet place to stay (only sheep, bird and fox noises). We could freely choose the pitch which is located on dry and soft grassland. A converted shepherds hut served as a bathroom with hot shower and a separate entrance for the composting loo. Both very clean and with practical appliances. The little car park has a honesty box for buying fire wood, local honey and excellent local apple juice (my daughter drank 4 big bottles!). The site has also 2 secluded glamping spots with big round tents.
The owner told me that the pitch has never more than 3 parties staying at the same time. The Red Phone Box camping site is my top favourite site I've stayed and I would always go back to it when in the area.

A fantastic bell tent set up with very comfortable double bed and solid kids camp beds. Well stocked private kitchen hut and private horse box bathroom with good hot water/shower. Very secluded from the other glamping tent and camping field. Wonderful set up for exploring followed by peaceful evenings over the camp fire/BBQ.

Local attractions

Close to the borders of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire, this site is well-placed for adventures of all kinds. There’s a wealth of urban spots hereabouts, so be sure to cross as many off lists as possible, starting with the museum, swimming pool and shops of Tenbury Wells and the bars, restaurants and brewery of Cleobury Mortimer (both within 10 minutes’ drive).

Farther afield, Ludlow (25 minutes) is a must for its castle, market, shops and brewery. Leominster and Kidderminster (both 30 minutes) have even more to entice, from Grange Court and the start of the 40-mile circular Black and White Trail in the former, to the Severn Valley Railway, railway museum and West Midlands Safari Park in the latter.

Bigger urban days can be had in Hereford (45 minutes), where visitors should wander about the Black and White museum, the waterworks museum and – perhaps most importantly of all – the cider museum.

If history is becoming the draw, the site’s within 35 minutes of Great Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Brockhampton, Croft Castle, Hampton Court and Stokesay Castle, and also within 35 minutes of Stockton Bury Gardens, Ralph Court Gardens and Hampton Gardens.

Must see

  • Ludlow Castle (12.5 kilometres)
