General

  • Off-grid and eco-friendly site on a working farm in the Teme Valley
  • A 30-minute drive from Leominster and Kidderminster
  • Honesty shop with perishables for sale on site

Are quiet and secluded countryside stays calling? Take a look at By the Red Phone Box, a family-friendly site 10 minutes’ drive from the Worcestershire market town of Tenbury Wells.

Amid meadow grasses on a Teme Valley working farm, this is a top spot for making the most of scenic rural vistas. Clee Hill is a local beauty spot, and a host of lanes, footpaths and bridleways start on site to take rambling guests on countryside strolls. The natural setting is enhanced by the free-range cattle, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens, but don’t worry – fencing ensures they can’t show up at tents unannounced.

There's plenty of birdsong to hear on site, and you can borrow wildlife books to identify what you’re hearing – walking maps are available too. The site's also 20 minutes' drive away from Wyre Forest, 15 minutes from Go Ape Wyre and 10 minutes from the fishing lakes at Woodston Manor.

With nature-filled and eco-friendly breaks being of utmost importance, the site has all the credentials for peaceful getaways with a low carbon footprint, including composting toilets, gas-heated water, solar lighting and a recycling system. The showers, toilets and washing-up area are all found in a lovingly restored horse box, and – a nice touch this – if temperatures drop, you can stay cosy overnight with hot-water bottles provided by the site team.

When it comes time for eats, barbecues are welcome on site, and you can pick up bits and bobs from the supermarket in Tenbury Wells. The site is next door to a pop-up country pub (open every other Friday during summer) and, just a short stroll down the lane, there’s a caravan park, where guests can join pizza or fish and chips evenings or fêtes.

Amazing place - my son and i had a lovely time! wonderful location with beautiful surroundings. The site was well kept, facilities were clean and had soap to use etc. Met the owner who was delivering wood for the honesty shop and had a lovely chat. Close enough to go on day trips to Ludlow, Tenbury Wells and a few national trusts - but once you get back to the field you feel like you are just with nature.

Beautiful and peaceful campsite. We were actually moved to the glamping field due to wet weather and a cancellation, which meant we got to use the glamping facilities while staying in our tent. We were really impressed by the mini kitchen and bathroom! We would definitely stay again, sitting outside with a campfire listening to birdsong was a perfect way to spend a weekend.

    Disliked:

The only thing I'd say is that we found locating the actual camping field a bit hard - it's actually round the corner from the red phone box which we didn't realise! It's possible that we missed some extra directions or signage but we would have appreciated a big arrow by the phonebox for slow people like us to notice!

From the manager...

So glad you enjoyed your stay with us, the farm house & farm entrance are next to the red phone box, we put the camping & glamping entrance just around the corner to offer out guests seclusion & privacy, due to a problem with the IT booking system our detailed welcome email giving directions from the farm house and red phone box hadn't gone out, we have rectified this and now all our future guests will get the welcome email, & detailed directions, thank you for bringing this to our attention. Ian & Emma

The best toiletries set up i have had in a long time. Great little setup with great detail thought out for all your needs. We thoroughly enjoyed the 3.5mile circular walk surrounding the site and local area.

    Disliked:

Be sure to bring your own entertainment although the sheep in the adjacent field provided hours of fun to my 8yr old.
Unfortunately no reception in this area let alone 4g although not alot can be done about this i imagine.

From the manager...

so glad you enjoyed your stay, although the mobile phone reception varies massively from network to network, as some guests have been able to use 4g dependant on network thanks Ian & Emma

Local attractions

Close to the borders of Worcestershire, Shropshire and Herefordshire, this site is well placed for adventures of all kinds. There’s a wealth of great spots hereabouts, so be sure to try as many as possible, starting with the museum, swimming pool and shops of Tenbury Wells and the bars, restaurants and brewery of Cleobury Mortimer (both market towns and within 10 minutes’ drive).

Farther afield, Ludlow (25 minutes) is a must for its castle, market, shops and brewery. Leominster and Kidderminster (both 30 minutes) have even more to entice, from Grange Court and the start of the 40-mile circular Black and White Trail in the former, to the Severn Valley Railway, railway museum and West Midlands Safari Park in the latter.

Other days out can be had in Hereford (45 minutes), where visitors should wander about the Black and White museum, the waterworks museum and – perhaps most importantly of all – the cider museum.

If history is becoming the draw, take trips to Great Witley Court, Berrington Hall, Brockhampton, Croft Castle, Hampton Court and Stokesay Castle (all within about half an hour). A similar distance away are Stockton Bury Gardens, Ralph Court Gardens and Hampton Gardens for the green-fingered guests.

Must see

  • Ludlow Castle (12.8 kilometres)
  • Witley Court & Gardens (English Heritage) (14.5 kilometres)
  • Stokesay Castle (22.3 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Brockhampton Estate (17.1 kilometres)
