  • Well-maintained level pitches with views over Cannock Chase
  • A 15-minute drive from Shugborough Hall; 20 minutes from Stafford
  • Two coarse fishing pools on site with accessible pegs
Fishing meets fab views at this site in the Staffordshire countryside, 20 minutes’ drive from Stafford. The fishing part of the equation at Carney Pools Camping and Caravanning comes from the setting next to two coarse fishing pools known as Carney Pools, which have fishing for all ages and abilities (including wheelchair-accessible pegs) at a pretty 12-acre site. And the views? Those come from a location that looks out over the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Pitches are set up in a level seven-acre field that’s sheltered by a well-established hedge and has access to two showers and toilet facilities (separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets plus accessible facilities). Dogs are welcome as long as they’re kept on a lead and cleaned up after. Dogs aren’t allowed around the fishing pools until after the fishery closes for the day. There's a bar on site, which is open on busy weekends only. For a break from fishing there are plenty of riverside and canalside strolls nearby, along with walks in Cannock Chase and other outings to the likes of a National Trust estate, a farm park or the atmospheric National Memorial Arboretum. To sort food and other essentials, it’s a journey of just under a mile to Wolseley Bridge where there’s a shop, pub, garden centre and Indian restaurant (which will also do deliveries if you’re in the mood to flop out on site). The folk here also recommend a trip to the farm shop three miles away to pick up bits for a picnic or barbecue back at base. On bank holidays and special occasions, the site tends to put up a marquee with live entertainment.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Simple site with a friendly atmosphere/staff. Good park for the kids with clear view from all pitches. Relaxed feel.

Disliked: Gets very boggy when it rains. Grass is more like a field and grass cutting are not collected meaning you get loads of wet grass stuck to everything. Would be great if they could provide some sort of pizza/chippy/ice cream vans from external vendors.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Good location, toilets and showers decent, friendly and relaxed. Will return.

Disliked: Ground is a bit uneven and a lot of grass to cover to get to the pitch, so a bit scary when wet, but managed to not get stuck!

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Layout of the site. We liked that the pitches were around the edge of a field with the play park in the centre. Pitches were level. Toilet block was mostly clean. Never had to queue for toilet or shower. Short walk from pitches to bins, water and toilets. Friendly site. Quiet, no road noise or noise from other campers late at night

Disliked: Some noise from the rail line but quickly got used to it. Had to pay £1 for 5 min shower. Not great when showering kids and having to keep an eye on clock. Cubicles could easily be made bigger for this too. Struggled with lack of space for drying/dressing. Having a bench/chair inside the cubicle would have been very useful. Small issues overall though, didn't spoil our weekend.

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: This site was spotlessly clean, the shower block and toilets were extremely clean too. The site is secure with a coded gated which shuts every evening. Short walk to Cannock chase, canal towpath and local pub which is very dog friendly.

Disliked: It isn’t really a dislike but you are close to the rail track so can hear trains go by but you soon get used to it and don’t even realise they’re going by.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The site was very well maintained and the shower facilities were great. The pitch was level and I liked the rural setting.

Disliked: The railway line is close by but I didn’t really notice the noise from my pitch. It certainly didn’t keep me awake!

Liked: Fishing pools, clean toilets, flat pitches Close to mountain biking park

Disliked: Nothing to complain about! Some might not appreciate a railway 100m away but it didn’t bother us

Powered cement/asphalt and grass travel trailer campsite

Liked: The shower/toilet blocks are very clean and of great quality. The showers are £1 for 5 minutes use but they are the best showers Iv ever used on a campsite so didn’t mind the charge. The kids play area is a good size and right in the middle of the camping field so it was really easy to keep an eye on my kids as they played. The grass is well kept and pitch size are good too.

Disliked: Electric tripped easily as it’s only 10amp. Other campsites at this price have 16amp. This isn’t a problem but it’s the only negative Iv got.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: The playground was great for the children and not largely noted on the website. The fishing ponds would be ideal for a camping fishing trip. It was 10 mins from Cannock Chase, ideal for biking and running. Friendly and helpful staff.

Disliked: Rail engineering works which woke us through the night with metal on metal hammering and power-tooling. Also didn’t like having to pay for the showers, noting the price of a non electric pitch is higher than average.

From the manager: Hi Edward, I am saddened to hear you had an unpleasant stay at our campsite. However unfortunately being next to a railway if they choose to do works on the rail at any given time there isn’t anything we can do about it, it can be as frustrating for you and much as us. The showers are stated that a charge is given for them, this isn’t because we want to charge for them it is simply because people leave them running constantly beforehand so we had no choice in but to put a charge on them so once the time runs out it stops. I can only recommend that you research the campsite before booking as you would have known we are close to a railway. I am happy to hear you thought our staff was helpful and friendly we do pride ourselves in customer service, we are on the outskirts of Cannock chase so ideal for walkers/bikers. We hope the railway hasn’t put you off staying with us again as I can assure you they don’t work on it every weekend. All the best Hollie

Local attractions

Rural break not complete without spotting some animals out in the open? Try your luck on the trails around the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Wolseley Centre (five minutes’ drive) or head to Amerton Farm (15 minutes) to feed lambs, groom horses and see chicks hatching (or let off some steam at the indoor and outdoor play areas…) For more of those peaceful country rambles, spend a thoughtful day at the National Memorial Arboretum or see if you can catch one of the opening dates at Mitton Manor Gardens for some splendid topiary, water features and sculptures. Both are 25 minutes away. Can’t resist the chance to poke about in a palatial country house? Nip over to the National Trust estate at Shugborough Hall or get your imagination going at the remains of Chartley Castle; both can be reached with a 15-minute drive. If that’s all a tad sedate, you may find the thrills of Hednesford Hills Raceway (25 minutes) more to your liking.
