  • Off-grid campsite with spectacular views over the Shropshire Hills
  • Ironbridge Valley of Invention 25 minutes’ drive; hiking from site
  • Spacious grass pitches in a dark-skies area; shops 15 minutes’ drive
Are you ready for a real off-grid experience? One with spectacular views over hills on the edge of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape, with lots of walking options right from the field… and the chance to see buzzards or red kites flying overhead? If it’s yes to all those questions, then haste ye to Spring Field Dark Skies Camping. On-site numbers are kept low to provide spacious pitches and privacy for all guests and keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe of the place. Facilities are simple: drinking water taps, solar power for the electricity and blocks with proper flushing toilets, showers and hot hand-washing facilities, plus separate grey and black water disposal is available. Guests are also welcome to unwind in a communal sheltered picnic pod with a TV and phone charging facilities. James, the camp host, can arrange canoe hire experiences along the river Severn directly from the site. If you’re keen to hone your barbecuing skills instead, pick up gourmet treats from the well-known butcher in Much Wenlock (15 minutes by car). You're welcome to use your own firepit or barbecue at the central fire-safe area or head to the communal central firepit; only firepits and woodfired barbecues hired from the site are permitted at the pitch for safety reasons. A modern woodfired pizza oven is in the central area of the site too. By the way, the site’s in a dark-skies area, so if you get a clear night, don’t miss the chance to see the stars glittering in the heavens far above you. It's also eco-friendly: a solar installation provides all electrical supplies. Keep your eyes peeled, as the open field management attracts many birds of prey. There are many more eco features, including eco-friendly mowers and recycling facilities. There are several traditional pubs serving good grub within 15 minutes' drive of the site, and Shrewsbury is only 35 minutes away for big nights out.

Primitive grass tent campsite (two person, backpacker, small)

Liked Nice and well spaced out. Small site without crowds. Toilets and showers very good and well kept. Unloading directly from car.

Disliked Not able to park alongside tent. Loud bloke standing by the firepit telling people he's going to Denmark on Monday for work (4 times in about an hour!)
My wife didn't like being badged "middle aged couple" to fill in this form 😲

From the manager: We are disappointed with your score as we always strive to give our guests a 10 experience. We seem to have been marked down by things not of our making.

As you correctly state, we are a small uncrowded site. We space tents away from campervans so that everyone has space to relax and for children to play safely without moving cars.

It is specifically referred to in the booking conditions that cars are not allowed after unpacking as this provides the space and safety aspect.

We cannot be blamed for another guest who may have annoyed you by enjoying himself.

Nor can we be blamed for you being "labelled" by Pitchup into an age bracket.
We do not like being labelled pensioners, but truth is, we are of that age bracket.

Power optional grass campervan campsite (large)

Liked Peace and tranquility, open space, fantastic calming views

Disliked Hot water was variable

From the manager: Thank you for reviewing our campsite and we look forward to seeing you again.

We did explain to all of our guests that particular weekend that the water heating was being worked on in our free to use showers.

We explained it was warm, rather than hot but everyone seemed to enjoy that on this particularly warm weekend.
The showers have now been updated with thermostatic valves and there is hot water for washing up.

Liked Charging pod lovely toilets fantastic hosts beautiful campsite

From the manager: Thank you for your review.
The pod seems to be a great success, especially for tents. It was very useful on Sunday as tents were being packed away and children could sit and play whilst it rained.

Liked Well organised, with attention to detail to make the stay as comfortable and as friendly as possible.
The drinking water was superb.

Disliked Having to leave

From the manager: It was lovely having you here and so appreciative of our wild life.

We hope to see you in Shetland one day.

Power optional grass tent campsite (medium)

Liked The area was amazing and the location itself was perfect. The site is located on a peaceful hill with far reaching views across towards Wales and is simply stunning. The pitches are spaced apart and with limited numbers of pitches it felt very private. Malcolm and James made us feel welcome and the facilities were clean, showers were hot and very good.

Disliked The only slight negative is that there is no hot water for washing up. This is just a minor grumble as we simply boiled our own hot water for washing the odd greasy pan but a hot water tap at the washing area would be a great addition.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review.

Malcolm is working on the washing up water heater as we message. We put the cover over the sink before we went on holiday so that, should it rain, you wouldn't get wet but we ran out of time.

You are not the first but hopefully it will shortly be warm water.

Liked Absolutely amazing stay. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by the lovely couple running the site. They showed us to our pitch and were so helpful informing us about the facilities etc. the facilities were always clean and topped up, couldn’t ask for anything more on that front. The views from the pitches were absolutely stunning. We would recommend a short drive to the Riverside Inn for a roast. A perfect chilled weekend.

Disliked Absolutely nothing. We will definitely be returning!

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback. It's good to hear of good experiences with foodie places we recommend.
Our aim is to provide a restful campsite.
We look forward to your return

Local attractions

If you’re an active family looking for sporty pursuits, whizz around on quad bikes, try an archery session or improve your aim while shooting clays at The Edge Adventure Activities (15 minutes’ drive). Go pony trekking in the Shropshire Hills (25 minutes), or take to the water in a kayak on the River Severn (half an hour). And of course, there are loads of hiking trails to explore on foot or by bike (an electric bike might make some of those hills easier though). Sneak a bit of history into the holiday mix with a potter around the ruins at Wroxeter Roman City (20 minutes), where you can also see a recreated Roman townhouse, and move forward to the 18th century at National Trust - Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (15 minutes) to admire the Italianate villa built by mega-architect John Nash. To continue the cultural theme, plan to spend a day discovering the numerous museums and attractions at Ironbridge Valley of Invention (25 minutes), where highlights include the chance to get dressed up in period hats at Blists Hill Victorian Town, pull a locomotive down the track at Engenuity or go deep underground in a tunnel oozing with bitumen.
