Camping this way

  • Simple pitches at a peaceful Herefordshire working smallholding
  • Hereford 15 minutes' drive; five minutes to the Wye for fishing
  • Family-friendly site; kids can collect eggs and feed animals
Heading to Herefordshire in search of a slice of the simple life? You’ll certainly get that at Primrose Smallholding and Camping – guests here join the goats, sheep, chickens and other resident animals at a working smallholding in a lovely peaceful setting near the little village of Holme Lacy. Book in at this family-friendly site and you’ll be staying in a three-acre field where guest numbers are capped to make sure everyone has plenty of space to pitch up and relax, and for kids to run about and play games in the open air. They’ll also be able to enjoy farm activities like collecting eggs or feeding the goats and sheep. Eggs are also available to buy for a taste of the farm with your breakfast or dinner. To cook up those meals, you’re welcome to bring along a barbecue or firepit (no open or ground fires, thanks, and please supervise children at all times). There’s a tap in the field to provide water for drinking, cooking and washing up; other facilities include a free electric central charging point (with six outlets) and two portable toilets that are thoroughly cleaned and deodorised regularly throughout the day. Heading out and about, there are plenty of walks nearby (Haugh Wood, 10 minutes’ drive away is a favourite) and the River Wye is five minutes’ drive away for coarse fishing, canoeing or paddleboarding. And while this place feels very rural, it’s actually only a 15-minute drive to the centre of Hereford – head there by day to explore the historic city centre or ask on site about the subsidised taxi service for an evening out.

What customers say

This roomy, peaceful site gets a thumbs-up for its friendly owner, Paul, who runs fun animal feeding for kids. Guests love the clean facilities (portaloos, hot showers) and the lovely country vibe. It's great value, perfect for families or solo travellers wanting a quiet escape with lots of space. A few folks wished for hot water at the wash-up sinks and more recycling bins.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Lovely location, Paul made us feel very welcome. Basic, but well kept facilities. Would love to pop back. Very close to Hereford but felt like miles away. Great value!

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hi Stuart
Thanks for leaving us feedback. As a small business we really appreciate input from our campers. This year we operated as a simple pop up site with limited facilities. Next week, the campsite will be returned to our sheep! In 2026, we hope to introduce lots of new facilities (subject to planning approval) to make the camping experience even more enjoyable. Hope to see you again then.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Location was great. Kids loved the tour of the animals and picking the chicken eggs each morning. Paul and his family was super welcoming and helped us with jump starting car after kids charged phones in car and run battery dead 🙈 flat site and a nice size. Close to local pubs and shops. Quiet location. Shower available in portaloo style with a new toilet block.

Disliked Could have done with warm running water for sink. Taps in toilets could have flowed better.

From the manager: Hi Jason
Thanks for staying with us and for leaving a helpful review. Glad everyone had a good time and hopefully your battery is holding its charge now!
All points noted and agreed regarding the hired in toilet block. Next year we hope to have our own purpose built shower and toilet block (subject to planning)! We've had some great feedback and ideas to build on next year. Hope to see you and your family soon.

Amazing family friendly site, fantastic price. Stay here!

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked An absolutely brilliant campsite, we enjoyed our stay from start to finish. The owner Paul is very friendly and welcoming, he is happy for you to pick a pitch when you arrive and he regularly visits the field to come and welcome newcomers and check in on existing customers. Toilets and washing up facilities all clean and tidy. Fire pits available for £5 for entirety of stay (bargain!) and big bags of mixed wood also £5. There is a 9am animal tour every morning, my boys both went every day, they absolutely loved it. Hats off to Primrose, a really special site.

Disliked Only thing needed is more soap in the bathrooms please, although there was plenty of sanitiser to use when it did run out.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: What a lovely review. Thank you so much for staying with us at Primrose. We really appreciate the time you have taken to share your feedback with us and future campers. All of this helps us to plan for next year and find out what works well and anything we need to do better. We try hard to make our site family and budget friendly at the same time so your feedback on the smallholding animal tour and fire wood prices are super helpful. Apologies for missing the hand washing soap top up. That's my error, I'm easily distracted and chat too much at times! We hope to see you all again soon.

Primitive grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Many thanks for taking the time to leave such lovely feedback Katrin. I'm so glad you had a good time on site and my brother Keith did a grand job looking after you and your family whilst we were away on a short break!
Hope you had a safe journey home.

Translation- The best place we've stayed in 14 days. The facilities are good, the place is clean and spacious, we had the best support here, and we immediately felt very comfortable. The owner, Keith, is a very open and friendly host. He tours the area twice a day to check on all guests and picks them up in the morning to feed the goats.
