Set in a perry pear orchard on an organic cattle farm: that sounds almost poetic. As are the views from the spectacularly scenic little place of West End Farm Campsite, set in the horseshoe bend of the River Severn on the edge of the peaceful Gloucestershire village of Arlingham, and adjacent to the river with easy access to the footpaths of the Severn Way. A rather smashing pub is within easy walking distance too: the Red Lion freehouse (owned by the village, hurrah) with tiptop locally sourced food, real ale and regular events like quiz nights and folk nights – all just the ticket after a peaceful pedal or serene stroll along the river paths or region's quiet flat roads…? West End Farm has a toilet block and chemical disposal. Both barbecues and campfires are allowed on site.

Liked Beautiful little campsite. Perfect amenities and amazing to have hot water to wash up. Showers are brilliant. Everything is well thought out and kept clean. The location is remote but near to great pub, cafe and lovely river walks. The birdlife is unreal - so much activity and wonderful to watch the crows doing their pre roost circling ritual every night. Had a very relaxing and peaceful stay here and will definitely return.

Liked Really peaceful showers toilets and washing up area very clean and tidy the farmers yard cafe is 2 minutes down the road that does fantastic coffees cakes and pastrys there's also a pub 10 minutes walk that does lovely meals we have booked 3 more nights in June thank you Neil Vaughan

Liked Great little site in a peaceful area with a cafe and pub within a short stroll. Friendly owners and nice little amenities block. Could maybe do with a little more solar lights on paths and around amenity building

Liked Everthing. Small site which we prefer, facilities were spotless. Easy walk to lovely pub. Also walks straight from site. Limited wifi but in middle of country side and we did not miss it.

Liked Lovely site within a short walk to the river. Clean, quiet, small with good facilities. Within walking distance of a coffee shop and fantastic pub (The Red Lion).

Liked Lovely quiet site, really nice to be next to the farm though and hear life going on. Great walks and local village is a delight. Great farm run cafe.

Disliked Shower block was a bit nippy so didn’t use it but would be perfect in warmer months. A little path to the water point would be a welcome addition.

Liked Washing up area under cover. Flat gravel pitch as it was wet. Could walk in the field next door. Just turn up and text them of your arrival.

Disliked Only 1 shower. I knew it was on a farm and would have cattle sounds and smells in february. Dusty dirty basin and loo.

We’re sorry for the frustration caused by the electricity going off during your stay. Unfortunately, this was due to a local car accident that damaged power lines in the area, which resulted in a temporary outage affecting us and surrounding properties. The issue was completely outside of our control, but we understand how inconvenient it must have been, especially in the evening.

We appreciate your patience while the power was restored and hope that aside from this unexpected incident, you had an enjoyable stay.

Route directions

From M5, come off at Junction 13 and take the A38 towards Bristol. You will shortly see a garage on the left. Take the right turning signposted Frampton-on-Severn and continue to The Bell public house on the left. Pass through Frampton, continue straight over the canal bridge and go straight across (SP Arlingham and Fretherne). Do not follow the road to Saul. Continue for approximately 3 miles entering the village of Arlingham and turn left at Red Lion public house into Church Road. Pass the church on your right and West End Farm is on the right in about 250 yards.

Local attractions

West End Farm Campsite's local village is Arlingham, also in the River Severn's horseshoe bend and just off Junction 13 of the M5. The area around the village is fab walking and cycling land, of public footpaths, riverside ambles and flat peaceful roads – all set among the first-class scenery of the England/Wales border area. (Don't know where to start? Ask at the Red Lion for details of their hare, salmon, cattle and skylark wanders.) A couple of miles from the farm is the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, running between Sharpness and the old docks of Gloucester. It's a pleasant place to while away a few meandering hours, particularly around Patch Bridge, close to the Wildfowl Reserve at Slimbridge which has the world's biggest collection of captive wildfowl. Other local options are Berkeley and the Edward Jenner Museum, where the clever chap first figured out vaccination, and Berkeley Castle, where poor old Edward 2 met his grisly end. Gloucester Cathedral is nine miles from the site; a little further afield are the Norman castle of Goodrich and the Tudor National Trust-managed house of Newark Park.
