  • Family-run Edale site at the start of the Pennine Way
  • A 20-minute drive from Ladybower Reservoir; 25 minutes from Buxton
  • Half a mile from a café, pub, railway station and visitor centre
Whether you're looking to get a toehold on craggy rock faces or fancy a taste of slow-paced village life, you can't go far wrong with a stay at this fab Peak District park. Head to Newfold Farm Campsite for hols full of hikes, cycles and hilly explores – the start of the long-distance Pennine Way is a few steps from the site entrance, with many other top rural spots a short drive away. Newbies seeking tips on what to get up to in the local area will be in good hands here – this family-run site is owned and operated by born-and-bred Edale folk who are more than happy to share their wisdom. The community-minded village is also home to a volunteer-run visitor centre, an independent café, a pizzeria and a lovely local pub. A railway station is less than half a mile away from base, so leaving the car at home is definitely an option for those heading here. Not that driving is an unpleasant business in this part of the world – on the road you'll pass by oodles of historic villages, valley views and grand country houses, including spectacular Chatsworth House… Dogs are welcome to join you at Newfold Farm Campsite; barbecues and bonfires are also allowed.

What customers say

This Edale campsite offers a gorgeous Peak District spot, ideal for hikers with trails right from the site. Guests love the great, clean, modern facilities, especially the new showers. The cafe, shop, and wood-fired pizza ovens are big hits, as is the friendly staff. Most reviews are glowing, though some note occasional noise and tight spots on certain pitches. A superb site, with many keen to come back.

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great facilities, lots of toilets and showers, mirrors and plugs, didn’t have to wait for anything
Easy to check in - told us about all amenities and food options including great woodfire pizza

Disliked Field was busier than expected
£15 charge for fire pit and had to ask several times for it before waiting for them to deliver it to us
Could have done with more staff in the evening to ensure quiet times are kept to as was difficult to sleep

I would go again with my partner but not as a family, need more space!

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great facilities: toilets, showers, general store/shop and cafe/bar on site. Very friendly staff and excellent location. All presented beautifully, which was a change from our low key type of sites we usually go for. Lovely setting with beautiful views and everything you could need on site, even WiFi which reached the field!

Disliked Expensive cafe (£48 for 2 full English and 2 egg baps!), expensive shop prices and small field (Grouse which is the larger one) so tents are close together and not much space to yourselves. Didn’t even have space to play frisbee together and you could hear everyone’s conversations around you which was a shame. People arrived with huge tents, way over the max pitch size so this didn’t help but no one seemed to be checked on site after you’d signed in with reception. People also parked on their pitch, which you’re not supposed to but they weren’t moved. Because there was charging and WiFi available, so many people were just on their phones and tablets so it spoilt the usual screen/work free holiday vibe but that didn’t impact us, just strange to see groups around a campfire on their phones. Overall, a really lovely place, very impressive but the field was a bit too small for us so the other campers around you really impact your stay in a way they wouldn’t normally.

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Good location not too crowded even though fully booked because of the bank holiday. Staff friendly and food was good. Had pizza from there.

Disliked Only think was because it was busy it would of been nice if the toilets/ showers were clean more frequently. How ever the facilities were good and well maintained so only a small thing

Local attractions

Draw a straight line from this well-placed site and you're bound to come across something that tickles your fancy. Heading west? Stop off for strolls at Ladybower Reservoir (25 minutes' drive). South? Buxton's fancy shops and theatres are on hand, as are the gorgeous grounds of Chatsworth House (40 minutes). Up for some underground explores? This site is a breezy 15-minute drive from Castleton, a village deep in the White Peak where there are caves and caverns aplenty. Bobbing up and down along underground watercourses is on the cards at Speedwell Cavern, where subterranean boat trips are up for grabs. The nearby Blue John Cavern, meanwhile, also has much to marvel at, including Waterfall Cavern and its shimmering multi-coloured dome… When you emerge bleary-eyed back into broad daylight, you’ll probably be struck by the shadow of mighty Mam Tor (10 minutes from base). Hike up this handsome hill for a three-mile circular trail that'll stretch your legs and open your eyes to some exceptional vistas – on sunny days you'll also likely have the bonus sight of daredevil paragliders circling and swooping overhead.
