  • Family-run Edale site at the start of the Pennine Way
  • A 20-minute drive from Ladybower Reservoir; 25 minutes from Buxton
  • Half a mile from a café, pub, railway station and visitor centre
Whether you're looking to get a toehold on craggy rock faces or fancy a taste of slow-paced village life, you can't go far wrong with a stay at this fab Peak District park. Head to Newfold Farm Campsite for hols full of hikes, cycles and hilly explores – the start of the long-distance Pennine Way is a few steps from the site entrance, with many other top rural spots a short drive away. Newbies seeking tips on what to get up to in the local area will be in good hands here – this family-run site is owned and operated by born-and-bred Edale folk who are more than happy to share their wisdom. The community-minded village is also home to a volunteer-run visitor centre, an independent café, a pizzeria and a lovely local pub. A railway station is less than half a mile away from base, so leaving the car at home is definitely an option for those heading here. Not that driving is an unpleasant business in this part of the world – on the road you'll pass by oodles of historic villages, valley views and grand country houses, including spectacular Chatsworth House… Dogs are welcome to join you at Newfold Farm Campsite; barbecues and bonfires are also allowed.

What customers say

Great spot for hikers with direct trail access. Staff are friendly & helpful. New washrooms & cafe get good marks. Some older facilities need updating, but a new block is coming. Minor noise/cleanliness issues sometimes, but generally excellent.

Deluxe Couple bell tent

Liked Great campsite - very child friendly. We had two yurts and three tents in the campsite so spent most of our time in the main camping field. The site has a quiet by 10 policy which is largely observed. It was very friendly and the new loo block in the far field is a great improvement. The Yurks had heated blankets are were well equipped. We ordered 15 pizzas on the Saturday evening ( a pre booked 5pm slot) and they were all ready by 5.20. Great food, very hot and good portions for hungry teenagers. Parking was easy and our younger campers made lots of friends so needed little entertainment. I've been coming here on and off since I was 15 (30 years) and look forward to many more return visits in the future. We will be back again next year.

Disliked My only minor criticism of the site was related to music. In an ideal world it would be great of the campsite had a no music policy. We arrived at the Yurts to find a large group (not camping in the field) all blasting out music VERY loud. Other that that I can't fault the place.

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Excellent site with everything you could need - and a few hundred yards from the Pennine way. Perfect for hiking up kinder scout. Great cafe, shop and modern showers and toilets. The shop has excellent local bread, veg and meat. Recommend the bacon and the cardamom buns

Disliked No marked pitches - so better if you turn up early. Not really a problem for our setup

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Everything!
Great sized field, plenty of huge tents, loads of room still for children to play😊
We managed to park quite close to our car, but some people have to go across the field with their belongings- however there's trolleys provided for help!
Visited the cafe on site for coffee and cake, absolutely beautiful 💯
Toilet and shower block was new, very nice, never had to wait! Always toilet roll provided, wash up area and bins in the same building!
And to top out visit off, we had a tour around the farm (with the farmer) seen the cutest little piglets (tiny) fell in love! This absolutely made our weekend!
Will definitely be back!

Disliked Maybe a couple more trolleys in busier periods, didn't affect us but did others.

Primitive grass campervan campsite

Liked Great facilities with an old and brand new shower, toilet and washing up block.
Dog friendly
Clearly laid out pitches for campervan/motorhomes
Fantastic location for walks to Kinder Scout.and surround beauty spots.
Cafe on site and grocery store (I didn't visit either so cannot review)

Disliked There wasn't really anywhere on site to take the dog for walk that I found, especially as it was busy.
WiFi signal was poor if that's important to you

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Beautiful scenery, great vibe, relaxed atmosphere, lovely looking bar and cafe, handy pizza stall and local to the pub. Liked that cars parked at the side so tents could be together with friends.

Disliked Toilets had no ventilation and not kept tidy. It’s under minded the lovely decor. Toilet roll ran out on Friday by 8.30pm. Hooks or shelves for towels/toothbrushes win the bathroom areas would be helpful.

Grouse primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Staff are super friendly and all round amazing! By far one of the best camp sites we’ve stayed at. It’s amazing to see that every staff member gives it their all so credit to all the staff and the owners.

Pizza’s are superb, would recommend you book in advance as they sell out. Food is superb and not over priced.

Location is fantastic, right at the start of the pennine way. It even has a little general store.

What I would like to say is a huge thank you to the staff for all their efforts.

Disliked I’ve marked the cleanliness as a 9 not because they don’t do a stellar job cleaning, it’s because of the minority of guests that don’t cars for other people or other peoples property. These may be a select few, but they really do spoil it for the rest of the people staying, not just here but anywhere! Please have some respect and treat it how you would expect your house to be treated. Always remember, someone has to clean the mess up because you didn’t!!

Local attractions

Draw a straight line from this well-placed site and you're bound to come across something that tickles your fancy. Heading west? Stop off for strolls at Ladybower Reservoir (25 minutes' drive). South? Buxton's fancy shops and theatres are on hand, as are the gorgeous grounds of Chatsworth House (40 minutes). Up for some underground explores? This site is a breezy 15-minute drive from Castleton, a village deep in the White Peak where there are caves and caverns aplenty. Bobbing up and down along underground watercourses is on the cards at Speedwell Cavern, where subterranean boat trips are up for grabs. The nearby Blue John Cavern, meanwhile, also has much to marvel at, including Waterfall Cavern and its shimmering multi-coloured dome… When you emerge bleary-eyed back into broad daylight, you’ll probably be struck by the shadow of mighty Mam Tor (10 minutes from base). Hike up this handsome hill for a three-mile circular trail that'll stretch your legs and open your eyes to some exceptional vistas – on sunny days you'll also likely have the bonus sight of daredevil paragliders circling and swooping overhead.
