  • Family-friendly site with easy access to Newgale Beach, Pembrokeshire
  • Haverfordwest 15 minutes’ drive; Tenby 50 minutes
  • On the Pembrokeshire Coast Path; a two-minute drive from a pub
If you would like your Welsh holiday to be punctuated by spectacular sunsets over the sea, now might be the time to book a spot at Newgale Campsite. This family-run (and family-friendly) spot benefits from a privileged location on the western coast of Pembrokeshire. How do you fancy the idea of getting up in the morning, crossing the road, scrambling across a low bank of shingle and being faced by the spectacle of St Brides Bay? It shouldn’t take any more than… oh, about one minute on foot to reach Newgale Beach. The time you save by staying so close to the sea can be invested in your favourite water-based activities, whether wild swimming, surfing or canoeing. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path passes just by the site; follow it north to reach Porth Mynawyd (a one-hour walk), a remote tidal beach in a deep cove with shallow waters and rockpools, or south to Nolton Haven Beach (55 minutes’ walk). This is a popular spot for surfing, so you might want to drive, instead, and bring your board (it takes about 10 minutes by car). National Trust - Southwood Estate (five minutes’ drive) is a top place for spotting the local wildlife, from grazing ponies to nesting birds. Amenities on site include a toilet/shower block with facilities for disabled guests, a launderette and a communal freezer. On weekends in June and the school summer holidays, a catering van serves woodfired pizzas. The nearest pub is a two-minute drive away, and there are several restaurants within a five-minute drive, plus plenty more in Haverfordwest (15 minutes).

Unpowered grass site

Liked: The levelled off pitches on the slope were a real bonus as we had a fantastic sea view. The facilities were very clean and the staff were friendly and welcoming. Everyone else we met on site were also friendly and it had a good atmosphere.

Disliked: Not a dislike, but if you stay in a tent, be aware that the road is quite busy and we pitched up close to it, so obviously got woken up early!

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Really good pitches, very close to the beach. Toilet and shower facilities were very clean. We will be coming again when the weather is warmer.

Disliked: More options for food would be great. With the pub closed due to fire, there is only one cafe. A small shop on site would be good.

Local attractions

The smallest city in the UK, St Davids (15 minutes’ drive) has a cathedral that holds a shrine to St David, which was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages. Just across the River Alun are the imposing ruins of Llys yr Esgob, Tyddewi / St Davids Bishop’s Palace. Roller coasters, water rides and family attractions await at Oakwood Theme Park (half an hour), which also has a soft-play area and indoor games. If the kids (or you…) are more into animals, book a relaxed trek at Pembrokeshire Llama Sanctuary (45 minutes). Do you like sunrises as much as sunsets? Then get up early and head to Tenby (50 minutes), which has two east-facing sandy beaches on Bae Caerfyrddin. From Tenby it’s also possible to catch a boat to Caldey Island, where you might buy chocolate or perfume made by the resident monks.
