The site and its views

General

  • Family-friendly smallholding in a rural location on the Llŷn Peninsula
  • Spectacular views towards the peak of Moelypenmaen
  • Lots of open space for kids to play

Get back to nature among spectacular surroundings with a stay at Gwynedd's Rhos Y Foel, in the middle of the Llŷn Peninsula a short drive from more lush landscapes at Snowdonia National Park.

Set with views towards the rocky peak of Moelypenmaen, Rhos Y Foel is a small and family-friendly site, with a wide swathe of open space on which the kids can let loose. Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Rhos Y Foel is a level and almost completely flat site – no uncomfy bumpy groundsheet nights here – and has a facilities block with hot running water.

Barbecues and campfires in firepits are allowed: for supplies, the local village is Boduan and the shops and services of market town Pwllheli are a few miles away.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Lovely site, however too busy during Covid 1930/09/2020

Thursday night stay was great, quiet campsite, clean facilities.
    Contactless check in.

    Disliked:

Friday night, all pitches were filled, lots and lots of people. Personally it was too many people for 2 toilets and 2 showers in current climate with Covid 19. I appreciate weekends are busier on sites however this was far too many people for the facilities available.

From the manager...

I do think to give us a rating of 4/10 in unfair as we have had good reviews all through the season with regards to our Covid response and you have described our campsite as lovely in your own review. We had less pitches booked that weekend than we would in a normal year and we are sorry if you had to wait for the toilet a bit longer than usual because of social distancing rules due to some of the toilets having to be kept locked, but you have to queue a bit longer everywhere in these times.

    Disliked:

Narrow and long entrance road only wide enough for one caravan.
Toilets very very basic and need refurbishing.
Bin area overflowing for several days and a health hazard.

From the manager...

We are sorry you didn't enjoy your stay, the road is narrow to the park but perfectly adequate to get even big caravans such as LMC's to site, the site layout is clearly shown in the drone photos on the sales page so I do feel it's a little harsh to complain about this after you arrived as we feel we provide all the information we can before booking. The toilets are basic but always kept clean and in working order. We are really sorry about the bins, you came to stay in the off season and the bin collection had dropped to every 2 weeks, we did request an additional collection to our contract but unfortunately they did not come till after the weekend.

The site owner was very friendly and helpful even taking the trouble to telephone me prior to my visit to let me know my pitch number. Also to offer adjacent space for family members with tent.
The site is very well maintained, Washing up areas, clean toilets and showers. (Covid alertness)

The views from the site are spectacular.

    Disliked:

Would like to see the addition of a handrail in the shower and soap dish, this is a suggestion not a criticism.

Lovely location with nice flat pitches. They had tried really hard to make it covid friendly by closing one toilet and leaving lots of sprays to clean etc.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately on the weekend we were there , there was loud music going on quite late one night , I then watched lots of them congregate at the loos and two people urinate in the outside washing up sinks ! Not the staffs fault by any means but it’s a shame there was no staff on site to speak to them.

A really peaceful campsite, close to many tourist attractions. Went during covid and cleaning products were left in the toilet block for people to use, helped make us feel safer.
    Would definitely come back!!

    Disliked:

Bins were overflowing midweek, were emptied on the Friday.
4 toilets and 2 showers may be quite busy during peak times, but not an issue while we were there.

Lovely quiet site with good, clean facilities. Beautiful scenery!26/09/2020

The scenery and the tranquility of the location were spectacular!
The facility to hire a fire pit at a reasonable price, and buy firewood on site was very good, and made for some good evenings under the stars sitting around chatting.
The toilets and showers, two of each, were good. Everything was cleaned regularly, and to a very good standard.
There was a washing machine and tumble drier, which we didn't use, but could see how they would benefit, but we were blessed with very good weather, so didn't use them.
The location itself was very 'away from it all', and rural, but close enough to Pwllheli to drive in a few minutes, and we spoke to people that had walked it in about an hour and a half, if walking is your thing.
It is just 6 miles to the nearest beach at Morfa Nefyn, which is beautiful, and I've added a photo of it. We went kayaking there as the weather was in our favour, across to another beach where there is a pub!! The Ty Coch Inn, as I recall.
Most of the week we were there, there was about 6 caravans and 6 tents, which changed often as people came and went, so sometimes 5 and 6, or whatever, and there was enough hot water for all. But when it was full on the last couple of nights, if you didn't shower at the right time, there wasn't!

    Disliked:

Our only real fault that we found was that when the site was full on the last couple of nights, and that there wasn't enough hot water for everyone. Obviously, a lot of people like to shower first thing, so if that's you, then you need to be early to beat the rush, and the same as a lot of families return from the beach.
If you're not prepared to drive a lot, like for everything, then this site is not for you.
The nearest pub is three miles away, and a local taxi driver told us about £10 to get there, which presumably is one way. (I didn't ask specifically)
So if you want the bright lights, this is not the site for you.
You can take your own drinks along and have a good time, but it's a long way if you want to go and have a drink out somewhere. And very dark to walk! (But that's also part of the beauty of the site to someone else)
This is not picking fault, as the site is great, just letting you know that this is a quiet, rural site, that doesn't have enough hot water capacity for about 15 tents and 7 or 8 caravans.

Although there was nobody there to meet/greet/reception the notice with our name and pitch location were enough.
The site is quiet and remote.
The scenery is quite nice if you get a right view.

    Disliked:

The facilities are a bit tired.
we assume the rubbish had built up over a busy period and over some time, there was a lot!!
There had been a lot of rain and the ground was very wet under foot.

Local attractions

As you'll know if you've ever had the sense to go there, the Llŷn Peninsula is lovely land, with sea all around as it jabs 30 miles into the Irish Sea from north-west Wales's tip. Rhos Y Foel is in an excellent setting to get to the best of its hills and coast in the site surrounds, and to explore the mountains and other highlights of Snowdonia a short drive away.

Around the peninsula, have seaside days at resorts like Abersoch, Nefyn, Morfa Nefyn and Pwllheli, all just a few miles away, or get active with afternoons among the wakeboarding, bowling, quad biking, go karting and fishing of Glasfryn Parc nearby at Pwllheli; soft play, food, a farm shop and a bar are at this latter as well. Paintball is nearby if you want to take things up a notch.

Another top local option for families is the award-winning GreenWood Forest Park, where you can paddle among trees, make things work at the world's only people-powered rollercoaster, see a live show, meet the animals or try den building and archery. More animal meeting is at Dwyfor Rabbit Farm, or drive to the foot of Snowdonia for a more active family day out at Gypsy Wood.

The famed 18-hole Nefyn & District Golf Club at Porthdinllaen is only a few minutes from the site.
