  • Thurso, Puffin Cove and Wolfburn Distillery within a half-hour drive
  • Farm tours and fishing available on site
You may well spot a few Highland cows by the side of the road as you roam through the Highlands and Islands – but how about a stay where you can get so close you can actually brush that gorgeous ginger hair? Indeed that’s one of the options on offer at Kirkton Holidays, a family-run working farm five minutes’ drive from the north coast at Melvich. This is a place where there’s always something going on, and the folk on site are eager to welcome guests in for a true taste of farming life. Come along in April and May to poke your nose into the lambing shed, or schedule a trip between March and June to catch the calving season in action. Even outside of those busiest seasons, there’s plenty to see and do here: settle in for trout fishing (in season), take mountain bikes out onto the tracks or wander along the farm’s pathways to spy wildlife, meet pygmy goats Harris and Tweed, feed the sheep and play with the dogs (as long as they’re not on duty at the time). For even more insight, sign up for a farm buggy tour where you’ll get taken around the farm, learn a bit about the farming calendar and take in the stunning views from the highest hill around. And yes – have a little stroke of those hairy Highland cows… At the end of the day, have a picnic at the outdoor tables or in a cosy wooden cabin. Electric hookups are provided, but please note there are no waste disposal facilities, so you'll need to deal with your rubbish elsewhere. It's also worth noting there are no toilets on site.

What customers say

This quiet farm stay has ace rural views and a chilled vibe. Guests rave about the super friendly hosts, heaps of farm animals, and great chances for tours and animal meet-and-greets. Paddock sites are tidy, flat, and gravel with power. No toilets on-site, but it's clear and great value. Farm-fresh goodies for sale!

From the manager: Hi. Disappointed with you giving a Review as above, specially as you never stayed.
When you booked, I sent a email to yourselves as some folk miss reading all our description which explains we don’t have facilities apart from electric hookup.
You arrived about 4pm and our son noticed you had a roof tent, he asked if you had facilities and you said “no” he replied asking what were you going to do for the bathroom and you replied we have just been, but who doesn’t need the bathroom from 4pm until about 10am in the morning??
On Our site you have to be self contained.
I also sent an email to yourselves after you left apologising about the situation and even though we don’t normally do it offered to refund you. You’ve never written back.
Please read the descriptions fully next time, incase you get caught out again.
Juanella and Willie.

Liked Everything about it was great. Will was a wonderful host, great to chat to and learn about the local area.
We went on the buggy tour which was great? 4 x 50 uear olds turned into kids for a few hours. Fabulous to meet all the animals but Colin the calf and the highland cows were a real treat. We could see and hear deer rutting in the distance. For us, this campsite experience was a definite highlight to our NC500 tour ✨️ The fabulous communal space meant we could have a glass of wine with cheese and biscuits evening too. We purchased some beef burgers and sausages made at the farm for our journey onwards and enjoyed those on a bbq the following night with the left over Stilton!! Pinch us, we're in NC500 heaven 😂 ....thank you Will and family.

Liked Quiet, peaceful, secluded, the views. Just us and one other motorhome. Though a working farm, I didn't feel like there was noise that disturbed us and because the pitches are in a gated area, you felt separated from the farm even though it's just around the corner. The owner has a well furnished small cabin, where you can buy their own sausages and burgers at a very reasonable price for what you get. There's also some seating and a hand wash basin.
We took our two collies and the owner allowed us to use the field opposite to let them off unleashed.
It was so nice to have them play fetch with amazing sunrise views.

The farm does have 6 working Collie dogs, all of whom are unleashed but very friendly. There was the youngest looking 15 year old Collie I've ever seen who has retired, that just loves the attention.

Liked Our host was wonderfully friendly and accommodating. There was history of the farm in the area which we really liked. The animals especially the eight border collies were wonderful and they took me for a walk! It was peaceful, tranquil and everything you needed all too soon we had to move on Because of our schedule. I wish we hadn’t act leave thank you very much.

Local attractions

In among all the antics on site, it’s worth finding time to explore the local area – as so often with the Highlands, it’s rather gorgeous. For starters, there’s a splendid sandy beach a mile and a half away at Melvich, and you can take a walk out to the cliffs at Puffin Cove to see the birds from may to early August. For a tipple or two to go with your evening meal, swing by the Wolfburn Distillery (25 minutes’ drive) for your whisky or Rock Rose (40 minutes) for a bottle of local gin. The seafood’s pretty good around here too – stop by at Scrabster or Thurso (both 25 minutes) to see boats coming in and see what you can find to eat. Alternatively, grab your golf clubs for a day on the course at Reay (10 minutes), stroll around 16th-century Castle of Mey (45 minutes) or take a day tour to Orkney from Thurso. If you’ve not yet snapped a pic of yourself by the John o’Groats sign, that’s slightly less than an hour away.
