  • Small family-run site 200 metres from the Kennet & Avon Canal
  • Walking, cycling and fishing along the canal towpath
  • Within easy reach of Avebury, Stonehenge and Bath
Are these ducks among the cutest neighbours you might see waddling along at any waterside site in the land? This quacking state of affairs is at family-run Foxhangers Canalside Holidays in Wiltshire, a peaceful place 200 metres from the Kennet & Avon Canal, which flows placidly between Reading and Bristol. Foxhangers is on a 90-acre farm, around a mile from the village of Rowde and three miles from Devizes. Famed south-west destinations including Avebury and Stonehenge, the Georgian city of Bath and Longleat Safari Park are all within easy reach. The farm is next to the canal towpath, an all-weather path for cycling or walking along its flight of 18th-century locks along to Devizes or into the Wiltshire countryside. The canal is also well stocked with fish: angling licences can be bought on site. Foxhangers has showers and toilets in a block around 65 metres from the accommodation fields, as well as a washing-up area and chemical disposal. Gas cylinders are available to buy.

What customers say

Peaceful, quiet site with roomy spots, often with water/power. Great location for canal walks and pubs. Basic but clean loos. Some sloped pitches need levellers; expect a bit of road noise. Many want to come back.

Liked This location is stunning, such a beautiful scenery and easy to find. Clean and generous spaces and accessible everywhere. The bathrooms were great, spacious with a great shower and clean toilets and facilities. The owners were welcoming and kind and had a chat or two but generally left us to it. No issues with electric or water and got the benefits of been on a slight hill so could see the fantastic views. Was a busy campsite but no noise or music "out of hours". They do allow dogs and had a little small holding so animals were around, lots of wildlife. Nice little pond near the reception area, and close to the canal! Just wonderful!! Not sure if there was WiFi as we didn't need it, we were on holibobs!! We have decided we will be back in a short while too!

Disliked It rained ! Hahaha not of their control!

Liked Nice peaceful site close to canal/Caen locks
Decent sized pitches
Water & electric on pitch

Disliked Not very clean on arrival where to go (us and a few others ended up in the narrow boat reception as no signs) and no one around, you have to go up to what seems like someone’s house to check in

Toilet/shower block was unisex which is slightly off putting, and needs updating as very dated/old.
Could maybe do with a toilet/shower block & washing up area on the second field as it’s quite a walk to get to but not the end of the world, and for the price you pay you can’t complain!

Liked The access to the site was easy and found my pitch first time with the information supplied by Pitchup. The pitch was large and had the amenities of EHU and running water. The scenery around was excellent especially when it was sunny. Also the site was very quiet and tranquil.

Liked Everything!
A lovely quiet site( only 20 pitches). The owners were very friendly and helpful. Easy access to the canal from the site with Devizes only about a 3 mile walk along the towpath past the Caen locks. Toilets and showers were clean and tidy. We are planning to visit again soon hopefully.

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Liked Amenities block kept very clean.
Great access to the canal for walks.
Site details emailed out in advance.
Relaxed site - didn’t see the owners and no site “patrols”.

Disliked Site was used as a base for large group undertaking DoE awards or similar. No issue with that, other than they had no concept of talking quietly between 11pm and 7am. They also regularly tried to walk through our pitch - over guy ropes - to get to the amenities block.

Appeared to have no site rules - I.e. quiet time between 11pm and 7am.

The Shower and toilet block was cramped and also unisex. Not a huge problem for us but something I suspect some people would want to be aware of.

Local attractions

Wander the canal first of all, for a short stroll along its locks or for the peacefully scenic three-mile walk into the market town of Devizes, home of 29 canal locks and hundreds of historic sites including over 500 listed buildings and an 11th-century Norman castle. History is all around here, such as at the famed and ancient stones of Avebury, 10 miles away, Chippenham and Trowbridge, both within 15 miles, and Lacock Abbey & Cloisters six miles away, used as a location in some of the Harry Potter films. The petting zoo, adventure playground, Georgian stately home and Capability Brown-designed gardens Bowood House & Gardens are seven miles away. A 20-mile drive will take you to the Roman baths, shopping and beaut old buildings of UNESCO World Heritage city of Bath along the River Avon; if you're a literary type, take pride in a trip to the city's Jane Austen Centre to see its museum on the writer and have a sup in its Regency tearoom. Bradford-on-Avon, 10 miles away, also has Georgian houses as well as plenty of independent shops and a handsome riverside walk. Stonehenge and Longleat Safari Park are both 20 miles from the farm.
