Brewery Farm: Early morning at Brewery Farm

General

  • Quiet farm site surrounded by footpaths in the Dorset village of Ansty
  • Half an hour's drive from Weymouth, Poole and the Jurassic Coast
  • Farm shop on site; pub with food next door

They might not make beer at Brewery Farm, but this fab Dorset site serves up good times in grand surrounds, and there's a pub right next door for good measure…

The said hostelry keeps the celebrated ales of the Hall and Woodhouse Brewery, who began their operation right here in the village of Ansty in the 18th century… and who instantly profited from a contract to supply beer to the army camped hereabouts waiting to see off Napoleon’s fleet.

If you’re into history, there’s lots of it to be supped and savoured in the area; same goes for walks, beaches, boat rides… the whole lot of it easily accessible from a berth on this peaceful and friendly site.

Facilities include a shop, selling the farm’s own produce; if you want to grill up an alfresco feast, go ahead – barbecues are permitted. The suitably ancient and rural inn over the road serves fresh locally sourced food as well.

Fancy exploring the area slowly? Ask the team to point you towards the network of country footpaths, through some of Dorset’s finest countryside.

Site is small and rural. Shower block very clean. As a single female traveller I felt safe and very much enjoyed the peace and quiet. Good pub just across the road.

Lovely setting, clear information from owner, showers warm and spotless. Excellent road directions provided by site (satnav takes you through a ford so use the site’s info). Pleasant pub nearby ( a stroll away). Good shop and post office on site.

    Disliked:

Well you can’t have a peaceful and slightly remote setting and also avoid narrow roads! Just be aware and drive to suit.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for your nice review. Yes we are remote - but that is what people come for - hope to see you here again.

Lots to like here, from the excellent booklet showing local walks ( how handy is that?!) to the Fox pub just opposite and a handy post office on site. Relaxed site. Not too many rules.

    Disliked:

The closeness of the pitch next to us. Not enough space. The chemical point right by our pitch. The EHU plots need to extend further along the fence line away from the traffic noise instead of being packed so tightly together. The on/off shower that lasted less than twenty seconds before having to be pushed again.

Thank you for taking the time to review our site and we are pleased to hear you liked our walking book. We take notes of your other comments.

The pub across the road. Very quiet

    Disliked:

Very dark. Needs some lighting as the stones on the floor are a hazard.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review our site and we are pleased you enjoyed the pub and the peace and quiet.

One of the main attractions of our rural site is the wonderful night skies - any lighting would spoil this and would be considered as light pollution. For this reason we only have lighting in the essential areas of the shower block and on our driveway. We are disappointed that you have marked us down for customer service - this is something we pride ourselves in and you will note from virtually every other review we have full marks.

Local attractions

If beaches are your bag, you’ve hit the big time here as the Jurassic Coast is studded not just with fossils but also sandy coves and rocky inlets: Lulworth Cove is a 40-minute drive away, and if you fancy something wilder, Winspit beach is accessible only by a footpath from Worth Matravers (45 minutes).

Another fine way to explore the coast is to make for Weymouth or Poole, both half an hour away, for a boat cruise. Both towns are crammed with further family-friendly attractions including funfairs and an aquarium in Weymouth, and slides and chutes and waterfalls at Poole’s Splashdown waterpark. Monkey World and the Tank Museum are also around half an hour away.

For an easy way to see the chalk hills and valleys of inland Dorset, take a seat on the Swanage Railway (50 minutes) for steam rides between the coast and Corfe Castle (40 minutes by car). The castle is well worth clambering over; if anyone’s missing the water, make for the nearby Dorset Waterpark for floating inflatable obstacle courses in a wooded lakeland setting.

For another day out with a difference, the graceful residents of Abbotsbury Swannery (45 minutes) were once kept by local monks for the purposes of scoffing at banquets. You can now visit the country's only nesting colony of mute swans and feed them, as well as get lost in the maze, hurtle about the adventure playground and roam the nearby subtropical gardens.

Must see

  • Hardy's Birthplace (11.8 kilometres)
  • The Tank Museum (16.2 kilometres)
  • Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (16.8 kilometres)

  • Hardy's Cottage (11.8 kilometres)
