Scenic countryside setting

  • Family-run park on a former stud farm and in a wildlife haven
  • Two and a half miles from the coast
  • Heated outdoor pool, bar, café, shop, takeaway and craft centre
Dithering re which setting you prefer for holiday accommodation – walks in the countryside versus hoofing it to the nearest beach? Try a countryside break by the sea at friendly and family-run Whitehill Country Park. On a former stud farm with converted stables and stone farm buildings, Whitehill is in a wildlife haven deep in the Devon countryside but only two and a half miles from the sands of the English Riviera: guaranteed, of course, to keep all sorts of neigh-sayers happy. Nature fans will champ at the bit to delve into the 40 acres of hill, woodland and countryside around the park, where 130 species of flora and ferns can be recorded neatly in nature-spotting notebooks and where local wildlife abounds: look out for badgers, kestrels, pheasants and buzzards among others. Meanwhile, beach buoys and girls will find the nearest sands only a couple of miles away: it’s but a short drive to the beaches of Paignton, Torquay and Brixham, and onto the 20 or so first-class beaches along this 22-mile stretch. On site there's a heated outdoor pool, plenty of play areas, walking trails, and nature all around; the park has won awards for its approach to wildlife management and conservation. Also around are letterboxing opps, a treasure trail to keep the little treasures occupied, and all the cons of a mod site such as a takeaway, café, shop and supping alfresco while watching the sun go down from the terrace at the Hayloft bar. Those who feel artistic can draw and paint in the indoor Shire Craft Centre; table tennis and a pool table are also on hand for indoor play.

Liked Pool was as described and kids enjoyed the club house entertainment/soft play.
Indoor pool was always quiet which helped if you wanted quiet time from the outdoor pool.

Disliked Issue with electric took 4 days to sort. turns out it was the fuse board trip which could have been solved the morning after reporting it.
I liked the fact there was limited signal but the issues with WiFi meant so Signal at all for me (EE). Other customers may not like the fact WiFi didn’t work as advertised

Liked Swimming pools, clean site

Disliked Outdoor pool could have been kept cleaner (dead wasps).

Mixed shower blocks are a big issue - not safe for women.

No main sinks in women’s toilets, no soap anywhere.

Liked This is a lovely campsite with great facilities. The showers and toilets were never busy and always clean. We used the gym and whilst quite small the equipment is good. Max of 5 allowed but really should be 4. Was too crowded with 5.

Great laundrette and pool area. Had fab weather so only used the outdoor pool. Was really nice but certainly not as heated as you may think! 5 yr old refused to use it as it is cold.

The evening entertainment seemed ok although we never stayed. Was disappointed with the food which took nearly 2 hrs to get and one meal completely inedible. Staff were great but only got refunded for the meal we didn’t eat. If waiting 2 hrs the whole lotshould have been refunded. My 5 yr old was struggling to stay awake!

They offer great activities but not every day some are only once a week so they get too booked so wasn’t able to experience any.

Disliked No WiFi!! My 4g didn’t work here at all and WiFi is appalling. A site this size should have internet that actually works. When you’re trying to plan your day but there’s no internet it’s impossible!

Pitch size. When booking I asked for a large pitch but certainly not what we got. We were expected to get everything- including our van!
We managed to get the tent and gazebo on but had to not put up the porch for the tent.
I understand the aim is to get as many people on as possible but it’s a shame we couldn’t put up the entire tent.

Liked Everything! Lovely facilities, pool is fantastic and we got lucky with the weather so felt like we were abroad all week. Every single member of staff are friendly and helpful. The whole site is very dog friendly and we loved that we could bring him to the entertainment at night, even on pool days we could sit with him in the shade in the coffee shop. The entertainment at night is fantastic, all the singers and entertainers are fab but Harriet blew us away. Such a talent! So much for kids to do but didn’t feel busy or noisy in any way. Location was also great to visit lots of coastal towns and also not far from Dartmoor where we enjoyed a day in the river. We will definitely be back! Also one final thing to mention which always swings a booking for me… the coffee at the hatch is amazing!

Disliked Honestly, nothing!

Local attractions

The sights and activities around this part of Devon will suit all tastes: Dartmoor for active adventures, Totnes and Dartmouth for history and heritage – and the 22 miles of the English Rivieria for beaches, watersports, fishing and boat trips. The closest beach to Whitehill Country Park is Goodrington, a mile south of Paignton. After you’ve stretched out on the red sands, there are a few other options to check out: learn about the history of the English Riviera at the free Seashore Centre, pedal your way around the boating lake, or take the kids to the waterslides and pools of Splashdown at Quaywest. The English Riviera is of course also Agatha Christie territory – Greenway House was her holiday home (also where David Suchet as Poirot filmed his last scenes. Sniff.) If you can’t make it to the annual Agatha Christie festival (tsk), amble along the 10 landmarks of the Agatha Christie Mile in Torquay; eight of the sites have clues spelling out the name of a Christie character. Hint: it’s probably not ‘Miss Marple’.
