Bundu Camping and Caravan Park: Hardstanding pitches surrounded by grass

General

  • On the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park
  • Within walking distance of the moors via an easy off-road path
  • Close to the Granite Way; cycle hire within 100 yards

Easy access to Dartmoor, Devon, Cornwall, moorland walks, close to the A30, Lydford Gorge, the Granite Way and with a pub serving food right next door: the location of Bundu Camping and Caravan Park rocks.

A small, friendly and family-run site, Bundu is on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park near Okehampton, and a nifty touring base for Devon and Cornwall north and south. National Cycle Route 27 the Granite Way is adjacent to the site; if you haven't brought your own wheels, bike hire is available within 100 yards. The moors are within walking distance via an easy off-road path.

Bundu has a barbecue area and a small shop selling provisions and charcoal; newspapers are available here too if you order them the day before. There's also an amenities block with toilets, showers and disabled facilities, all heated in winter, as well as a laundry room and a washing-up area.

The whole site appeared clean & well kept. Toilets & showers were basic but clean with plenty of hot water. Easy access to path/cycle way to either Okehampton or Tavistock. Meldon viaduct is well worth seeing as is the Highwayman Inn in Sourton. Friendly staff.

    Disliked:

Traffic noise from adjacent A30 was noticeable although not enough to dusturb sleep after a good walk.

Well kept campsite with mature trees & shrubs, level pitches, very clean toilet block, great showers - never went cold. Yes there is road noise from the A30, but this didn't keep us awake in the motorhome. The location was perfect for exploring Dartmoor, either by bike (direct gate onto The Granite Way) or by road in the motorhome. Very convenient pub next door. Good TV signal. Yes we would stay here again. Thank you

    Disliked:

The toilet/shower block was a fair walk from our pitch. This didn't bother us as we are all pretty fit, but it may be an issue for others. The road noise seemed louder by the toilets, so I was glad we were on the opposite end of the site.

The pitches were very tidy, great location for bike riding …05/09/2021

The pitches were very tidy, great location for bike riding and walking, there is a gate at the bottom of the campsite leading straight on to a path. Easy to find. Toilets and shower facilities were very clean (the guy who cleans them is the friendliest person on the site and very accommodating) but like others have mentioned needs updating. There is a pub just outside but it’s more of a bike ride drop off and sells limited food, pasties and pizza was all there was on the menu.

    Disliked:

Before we arrived at Bundu we phoned to pre-warn the site that our son has additional needs and being in a tent would it be possible to have a pitch slightly away from others, mainly for the sake of other campers as we didn’t want other children hearing some of the things our son tends to say when he is having a meltdown. They said their pitches were close together.
When we arrived we were told our pitch number, went down to our pitch and started setting up, all the pitches are very close together. We were then told we had to move some of our stuff as one of their residents likes to park his van in between the pitch. The owner rides his ride on mower everyday up and down the campsite, which is great if he was mowing but it sometimes felt he was keeping an eye on people. There are notices everywhere with “rules” which is absolutely fine but it’s also mentioned in passing a lot too and more than once, one especially is people using the showers and how long they take, we’re all for saving water but I don’t need to be reminded how long a shower ‘should’ take.
We left 4 days early and when we went into reception to tell them we were off, the lady said “reception is closed” so I said I was just letting you know we are off to which she replied ok and I left. There was no ‘did you enjoy your stay’, ‘was everything ok, why are you leaving so early?
Overall it kind of felt like they were more interested in saving money their end and watching over you rather than making you feel welcome.

Directions

Local attractions

Nearby Lydford Gorge, the valley carved into hard Dartmoor rock, is the deepest gorge in England's south west and a popular walking pick throughout the year for its 100-foot high White Lady waterfall and the Devils Cauldron whirlpools. Several walks are around here; pick up a National Trust leaflet at the site for details on routes.

Heaps more outdoorsy pursuits are easily found in the Bundu Camping and Caravan Park surrounds, like the hiking trails and horse riding of Dartmoor, golfing and fishing in the nearby countryside, and surfing and sunbathing north of the site at Bude and Widemouth Bay.

The old tannery town and Francis Drake's birthplace of Tavistock within a short drive is an award-winning option for shopping, at its Pannier Market on Fridays, regular events like antique and craft fairs, and the farmers' market fortnightly in the Square, voted the best in the southwest.

More history is all around at places like Plymouth, where you can take the crew on a boat trip to see the navy ships in dock; Princetown, with its famed prison and museum; the old river port Morwellham Quay, and historic houses like 700 year old Buckland Abbey near Yelverton and the early twentieth century country house Castle Drogo, near Drewsteignton.
