Pitches with countryside views

  • Family-friendly site with stunning views across Solway Firth
  • A 10-minute drive from the Lake District and 20 from the coast
  • Shops and restaurants five miles away in Wigton
Rural rambles without having to leave base – bag a berth at Blaithwaite House, 10 minutes’ drive from the market town of Wigton, for a taste of life on a Cumbria country estate. And not just any old country estate – this one stretches for a generous 200 acres, bringing with it 50 acres of woodland to frolic in, and a walking trail that covers over two miles (Yes, it’s a big place, so best be picking up a map before striding forth.) Enjoyed that warm up? More walks, bike rides and other outdoorsy pursuits are 10 minutes’ drive away in the Lake District National Park or 20 minutes away on the Solway coast. Time to catch your breath? Settle in on site for splendid views over the Solway Firth or to cook up something tasty at the barbecue and firepit area (shop ahead and you can stash your supplies in the site’s fridges and freezer). If cooking doesn’t appeal, decamp to a local pub – two such establishments an easy five-minute drive away serve up homemade food. Still got energy to burn? Play areas, a football field and a playing field offer plenty of space to let off steam. If you’ve got a gaggle of buddies on hand, book ahead to mercilessly hunt them down with a game of laser tag… but whatever you get up to, don’t forget to give a cheery wave to Snowy the goat and her chicken pals. The site may be sizeable, but facilities aren’t far-flung – washing-up areas and individual toilets and showers are in the pitches field and supplied with hot water from the eco-friendly biomass boilers.

What customers say

Blaithwaite House boasts lovely grounds, heaps of space, and plenty for kids, with two play parks and animals. Toilets & showers are usually clean with hot water. Friendly staff & a handy Lake District location. Downsides: some noise post-curfew, patchy toilet upkeep, and needed facility maintenance.

Liked Good play areas

Disliked Toilets weren't the cleanest- they weren't cleaned until 10/11am, so before that time the floors were soaked from showers, bins overflowing, little to no toilet roll.

Outside of Blaithwaite's control to an extent, but the last few days of our holiday were ruined by other campers- a tent of young girls drinking and shouting until after midnight, and a huge group (20+ including the children, spread across a couple of pitches but all sitting outside one of the tents in the middle of the field) letting their children run wild with head torches and screaming until 11pm. Disappointed that such a large group were able to book together. From leaving the bar at 9pm they were ridiculously noisy- we understand that everyone is different but there's sitting outside your tent chatting, then there's joining in with your children literally have screaming competitions at 11pm while they run between other pitches. Messaged out of hours number to see if someone could come down and enforce the "no tolerance" post 11pm noise rule- the message was read, but no response and nobody came down. Again, obviously it's out of the site's control who books the site and unfortunately with camping there's sometimes inconsiderate campers but I think perhaps a patrol around 10.30pm reminding people of the 11pm cutoff, asking them to wind it down a little isn't too much to ask.

Liked Very friendly welcome when we arrived, personal showing to our pitch, we found a problem with the pitch, wasps were everywhere due to previous occupants pouring something on the grass, we were immediately reallocated to a different pitch which was very satisfactory. Lovely site, play parks, shower cubicles, washing up points all great. The barn is outstanding, the bar prices are fantastic and having a singer on the Saturday night was a brilliant bonus. All staff members we came into contact with were extremely friendly and helpful, can't really fault anything!

Disliked The weather, which is completely out of the control of Blaithwaite but it did mean we had to cut our trip short, an amber weather warning for wind and heavy rain, the staff alerted us to this bu visiting every pitch and also emailed us advising but not enforcing us to pack up and leave, we did make the decision to go for our safety.

Unpowered grass tent site (eight person)

Liked Lots of space for pitching and for the kids to play. 2 parks, mini golf, enclosed gardens and a football/rugby pitch. A onsite bar and a pizza van on weekends which was enough to keep us all happy.
Toilets and showers were clean and tidy (although they could do with a mirror and some hooks in the Elrigg block) 4th visit over the last few years and have booked another few nights with more of us for 2 weeks time.
Location was great for us just far enough away from local amenities (25 mins drive to Keswick) to feel close but far enough to feel like we were in the middle of the countryside
Would highly recommend this site and plan on staying here again over the years to come

Liked The grounds are beautiful, there’s crazy Golf , chequers , beautiful barn with bar and entertainment, we walked the dog trail which ended up by the playground and 2 goats (Ice man and Caramel) and of course the chickens. The fields are equipped with toilets and showers which were cleaned daily and had hot water constantly. The is laser tag but we didn’t try it and a food wagon came which was a lovely treat . All in all it was a lovely few days we would recommend the site.

Disliked The paddock forks only had toilets , ideally a shower would have been nice .wi for would of been fantastic

Local attractions

As well as the hiking trails of the Lake District National Park, active options nearby include Bassenthwaite Lakes, 20 minutes’ drive from base, where there are lakeside paths, boat hire and tours and tastings at Lakes Distillery. Derwentwater, half an hour away, has kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing; you could also get out on the water on an Ullswater Steamer at Pooley Bridge (access 40 minutes' drive away at Penrith), cruising by some of the area's highest peaks. Historical highlights are plentiful in the region too: Carlisle Castle and Mirehouse House and Gardens are both within half an hour, Gretna Green is 40 minutes away and the remains of the great Hadrian’s Wall are reachable in about an hour. Try something a little different at the Rheged Discovery Centre, 40 minutes away, where there are cafés, craft shops and a six-storey cinema screen, all in the UK’s largest grass-covered building.
