  • No-frills Northumberland camping with views of Alnwick Castle
  • Five minutes’ drive from Alnwick Castle and 20 minutes from Cragside
  • Off-grid farm site with an honesty shop and livestock all around
Roll up all you Harry Potter fans – now you can embark on a camping adventure with views of Alnwick Castle, where so many scenes from the famous film franchise were shot. Set on a three-acre field, Heckley Farm Camping is a laidback, off-grid sort of a place, with a very limited number of spacious grass pitches on a working Northumberland farm. To the west of the field, a large beech hedge provides shelter from the prevailing westerly wind. Wherever you pitch on the field, you’ll be surrounded by wildlife; you can expect to see some of the barn owls, buzzards, hares and deer that live around the farm. The surrounding land is a mixture of cattle and arable farming, and you’re sure to meet the two pet pigs as well as some very friendly and free-range hens – you can buy their eggs for breakfast and pop the money in the site’s honesty box. As this is pretty much wild camping, there’s no electricity on site, although drinking water and well-maintained posh portable toilets are provided. You'll be allowed to park at your pitch for easy setting up too. It’s a firmly family-friendly vibe at this low-key, relaxed site; it is certainly not a spot for party animals.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: In a quiet area with lovely views, right near Alnwick town centre. The site owner was a down very friendly and accommodating. He took time out of his morning to check in on everyone and ask how their night was. The skies at night were stunning and the eggs were a nice treat for breakfast.

Disliked: Not really something I disliked but if you pitch up at the bottom of the site, it’s a bit of a walk to the toilet.

Liked: Lance the owner came down within minutes to ensure all was well with our pitch and to find out if we needed anything. Very affable friendly chap. Ideal campsite for us, no hoards of tents or van’s forever in rows no screaming kids (or adults) just a peaceful place to pitch up and Alnwick is five minutes away by car Five stars

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Back to basics, large field, and you could pick where you wanted to pitch. Lovely views across the fields. Portaloos were spotless - which was nice! We prefer simple and quiet campsites. An added benefit of being close to Alnwick if you wanted to nip in for a meal or see the sights. Also, quick access to the local coastline. Perfect.

Liked: Everything! Hospitality was amazing. The owner was very friendly, welcoming and kind to my 2 year old Son. He was available to answer any questions and give information on his farm and the local area. The setting was ideal and the views were incredible. Could see Alnwick Castle from the pitch and the sky at night was uninterrupted by any light pollution. Plenty to do on the farm and my Son loved all of the animals and everything about our stay here. Portable toilets were clean and there was easy access to clean water. Would definitely recommend anyone to stay here. Family friendly and peaceful stay.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked: Just what I had expected. Lovely peaceful area so close to Alnwick castle and town where we had intended to visit . Lance the owner came down to visit and make sure all was okay, what a great guy very out going! Proper down to earth bloke. The portaloos on site was very clean too! We managed to see the bulls and horses in the field opposite too! Will definitely be going back, next time for longer! If you want peaceful camping with just the basic field and toilets and fresh running water this is the place to go! We took plenty of games for the children, and they absolutely loved it was so much space between other tents and families for the kids to just be free!
