  • Yorkshire Dales site with stunning views across Wensleydale
  • Leyburn 10 minutes’ drive; Middleham Castle 15 minutes
  • Pubs about 20 minutes’ walk; shops and restaurants 10 minutes’ drive
Well, this is quite some setting. Penhill Park is a nearly wild site with superb views over the hills and vales of Wensleydale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. There’s an abundance of rural beauty to explore from the neatly mown field, and conveniently, the shops and restaurants of the market town of Leyburn are an easy 10-minute drive away. Set on the edge of a 100-acre working farm, this family-friendly site is at the foot of Penhill (which means easy access to the peak’s hiking area) and also adjacent to Middleham Moor, where you can watch racehorses from the local yards exercise on the gallops every morning. There are also two pubs about 20 minutes’ walk away. If you really want to stretch your legs, Wensley Waterfall is about three miles away (just over an hour on foot). Dogs are welcome to accompany you on your meanders, but they must be kept on a lead while on site as livestock grazes the surrounding fields. This peaceful spot is equipped with eco-toilets and a shower shack, a washing-up area and recycling amenities. The owners operate a ‘leave nothing behind but footprints’ policy, so be sure to take all your waste home with you. Depending on weather conditions, firepits are generally allowed, but please don’t use disposable barbecues or light campfires on the ground.

What customers say

Spectacular views, peaceful 'nearly wild' escape. Basic facilities are clean, hot showers & honesty shop a hit. Great for walkers, but can be breezy. Steep access & tricky for big rigs. Extra shower coming!

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked The highlight of the campsite is the tipi - large, spacious tent where we were able to chill out when it rained. The views are also incredible and the owners are really nice.

Disliked Not a massive deal, but the grass could use a trim. The biggest downside for me personally was that I could not get hot water in the shower, it was barely warm and on a cold morning it was a bit uncomfortable.

From the manager: Thank you for your comments, we are glad you made use of the Tipi. There are longer and shorter areas of grass, we usually have both as peoples preferences differ, some people prefer the longer grass as its softer but some don't like it when its wet. Some people prefer the meadow style grass and its good for pollinators with the clover and other meadow flowers.

As for the shower we usually have people comment its too hot so we can't seem to win! if it wasn't hot at all it suggests there was probably an issue with the boiler lighting. There is a number on the information board and on all of your booking confirmation emails to call if theres an issue and we can usually resolve most things immediately. If we don't know there's an issue we can't do anything to fix it for you.

Very scenic and peaceful, but very basic facilities for the price

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Fantastic views, very peaceful location, clean shower and toilets. Friendly sheep! Worth being aware if you have a dog that the sheep are not just in adjoining fields but also wander around the campsite. Access to hiking straight from the campsite.

Disliked Lack of bins and drinking water- this is stated in the description but feel maybe the price doesn't reflect just how.basix the facilities are. Saw mention of washing up facilities but only basins looked like hand-wash rather than kitchen?

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for coming to stay, sorry you think we are overpriced.
We provide large unallocated spaces for camping, unspoiled views of the Yorkshire dales and allow campfires. Hot showers, clean toilets and a communal Tipi space is available to use with a coffee machine and honesty shop for essentials. Everyone has a different perspective but we don’t feel they are very basic facilities?

The washing up area is at the end of the row of showers next to the bins so you must have missed them, the basins in between the toilets are for hand washing etc.
The sheep don’t regularly wander the campsite, they are pet lambs that sometimes escape from where they should be, we do ask that dogs stay on a lead because we are a working farm.

All the best for your onward journey.

Liked Amazing views from this beautiful location
Was not busy even on a sunny solstice weekend
Facilities basic but well maintained - one, soon to be two, showers, a washing up area and compost loo's
Football goal for a kick about
Close proximity to loads of great walks and some amazing waterfalls
Cute honesty shop

Disliked We lucked out with the weather but imagine that it might be a bit exposed on a windy day
Grass was a bit long - not ideal for footie

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Amazing little site with some amazing views! Toilets are good enough as are the showers (although we didn’t use them, good to have available) small honesty shop with some basic bits. Little football net for the kids. We will return for sure

Disliked Nothing that can’t be helped eg. a lot of flies about of all sizes, but being next to a working farm this is expected. Be sure to check the directions to avoid the steeper hill (didn’t bother us but just for info)

Local attractions

In a secluded, wooded section of Tupgill Park Estate (five minutes’ drive) is the Forbidden Corner. Originally built as a folly, this four-acre garden now houses a small adventure park. Visitors, who enter via a tower with a sharp-toothed mouth, can explore a maze and a network of tunnels and chambers. Historians, royalists and Shakespeare scholars make a beeline for Middleham Castle (15 minutes), the childhood home of King Richard III during the second half of the 1400s. Although it now sits in ruins (but very atmospheric ruins), it was once so opulent, it was known as the ‘Windsor of the North’. Learn more about this particular corner of God’s own country at the Dales Countryside Museum (25 minutes). In addition to artefacts illustrating rural life in Yorkshire, there are rotating art displays, plus exhibitions on subjects ranging from local wildlife to animal husbandry in the Dales.
