Riverside views with plenty of nature

  • Quiet riverside pitches at a Nottinghamshire country pub
  • Lincoln, Southwell and Sherwood Forest all half an hour's drive
  • Kids and dogs welcome; home-cooked meals available in the pub
A quiet riverside spot… views across fields… lots of wildlife around… and walks, watersports and cycling just outside… well, it doesn’t get much better than that for a chilled-out camping spot, does it? Actually, perhaps it does – because when you stay at The Brownlow Arms, you’ll also have the added bonus of having a pub right next to your pitch too. And that means easy access to a drink and a meal at the end of your day out – with no need to drive back to your accommodation afterwards (good news when there’s a range of real ales to try out, perhaps…). It’s a very welcoming setup at this Nottinghamshire location, with both dogs and kids welcome, and a play area provided for the latter (handily within eyesight of the pitches so the kids can have a bit of independence while parents supervise from afar). The pub is open throughout the week for drinks, with home-cooked meals also available from Thursday to Sunday. The site itself has been nicely set up with a clutch of useful facilities including toilets, showers (both including accessible options), a chemical disposal point and wifi. Campfires and barbecues are permitted, with supplies available at the shops in Sutton on Trent and Tuxford, both within 10 minutes’ drive.

What customers say

Lovely, quiet spot with great grub & atmosphere. Spacious sites, but recent rain made it boggy & mucky, affecting access. Some issues with power/toilets. Management's fixing it.

Liked Had a one-night stay at the Brownlow Arms. It's a lovely traditional pub serving good beer and good food. The camp site itself offers nice level pitches. There's a play area for the children and dogs are very welcome on site and inside the pub. There was live entertainment on the Saturday night I stayed. The atmosphere was also nice and welcoming. It can get busy but the staff all work hard to make sure that you don't have to wait too long to get served. Top tip, if you want food, book a table on arrival, we managed to get the last slot for our evening there, the food itself was great!

Disliked Toilets and showers could do with improvement and in fairness it looks like work in that area is ongoing.

Liked Nice little site off the A1. Very reasonable at £12 per night with showers, toilets, Elsan and fresh water as well as EHU. Lady who checked me in was very helpful. Felt very safe as lone traveler.

Disliked Site was under development, especially the pub that only served food at the weekend but not a problem for me.

Liked Pub food was much better than we expected!!! Walks along the river were easily accessible.

Disliked No hot water in the toilets so could only wash with freezing cold water. Lights went off quickly in showers so you end up stood freezing in the dark. No heating at all in shower block or toilets. Pub run down but serves surprisingly good food.

Liked Lovely space to camp and a great pub with an excellent selection of beers. Very friendly people and a good atmosphere. Camping was on grass which was fine and flat for us. Excellent for a one night stop in our campervan.

Disliked No food on except on weekends. We assumed a pub would have food so didn't pack any. Our fault for not checking, but loose a star as a pub really should have a basic menu. How hard are toasties? Also the amenities are basic so another for that but they know and they are improving. Despite these few issues we would definitely recommend a stay just bring your own grub.

Liked We recently stayed over the Easter weekend and had a bit of a rollercoaster experience. Here is the breakdown of the highs and lows of our visit:
The Good Stuff
• The Pitch & People: The pitch itself was great—well-maintained and a nice spot to set up. The owners are lovely people, very welcoming and friendly.
• Entertainment: They had a lot going on over the Easter break! While we couldn’t actually get into the event because the pub was packed to the rafters, it was nice to see a lively atmosphere.
• Late Night Snacks: One evening, they offered pies and sausage rolls from a heated display. We tried both and they were delicious. The sausage rolls were a little on the pricey side, but the quality was definitely there.

Disliked The Not-So-Good Stuff
• Facilities Issues: This was the biggest letdown. The women’s showers were inconsistent—swinging between freezing cold and scalding hot. To make matters worse, the bathrooms aren't heated, which made for a very chilly experience.
• Toilet Paper Shortage: The toilets ran out of paper entirely. Even after we informed the pub staff, it took a couple of hours to be refilled. We eventually gave up and went out to buy our own.
• Food Availability: We messaged beforehand and told that due to the high volume of campers, the kitchen would only be serving "light bites" and fish and chips on Friday. However, once we were there, it didn't seem that busy with campers (the pub was mostly locals). We later saw a post that they were actually looking for a chef, which likely explained the limited menu.

Local attractions

Working up a thirst for your evening pint(s) shouldn’t be an issue around here, as it’s very easy to get out for a riverside walk or a bike ride on one of the nearby dedicated cycle paths. Something a bit different? Take a short walk to Marnham Boat Club to organise watersports including water-skiing. For local outings, head to the sobering but important National Holocaust Centre and Museum (15 minutes’ drive) or stop in Tuxford (10 minutes) for the Walks Of Life Museum and Museum of the Horse. A little further away, you may like to visit Southwell (half an hour) for the minster and National Trust - The Workhouse, or Newark-on-Trent (20 minutes) for its National Civil War Centre, air museum and castle. Continue the fresh-air activities with time at RSPB Langford Lowfields (20 minutes) or Sherwood Forest (half an hour), or opt for more city time with a day in Lincoln (half an hour), looking out for its castle, cathedral and bishops’ palace. National Trust members? Check out Clumber Park (20 minutes) and Hardwick Hall (50 minutes).
