  • Wild camping with perks in woodland 40 minutes’ drive from Nottingham
  • Newark-on-Trent 15 minutes’ drive; Skylarks Nature Reserve 25 minutes
  • Wood-fired hot tub, dog park and communal kitchen on site
You don’t have to be able to extricate yourself from a tortuous maze to stay at The Labyrinth Woodland. This small, remote site with grass pitches is in nine acres of woodland in the Nottinghamshire section of the Vale of Belvoir, about 40 minutes’ drive from Nottingham. This is wild camping, but with a large handful of excellent perks. Yes, the toilets are of the portable kind, but the shower (in an environmentally friendly roofless cabin in the middle of the forest) could easily be found in a glamping set-up. Then there are communal areas – from the outdoor kitchen, which has a camping gas cooker and washing-up facilities (with hot water), to the campfire area, where you can help yourself to wood that has already been chopped for you. Last but by no means least, you can have a soak in the wood-fired hot tub (for which there is an additional charge). Squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, deer and birds call these woods home, so keep your eyes peeled to see what wildlife you might spot. Your four-legged buddy should be kept on a lead at all times, but there is a private and secure dog park on site. Other good destinations for a dog-friendly walk are the banks of Kilvington Lakes (15 minutes’ walk) and the Linear Walk (15 minutes’ drive), which follows the path of a former railway line. Other local activities include fishing at Belvoir Waters or Portland Fishing Lakes (five minutes) and birdwatching at Skylarks Nature Reserve (25 minutes), an area of wetlands and grasslands.

Bell tent

Liked We had a wonderful stay at the bell tent at the campsite. The site was clean, peaceful, and very well maintained. The hot tub was spotless and a real highlight of our visit – perfect for relaxing.

The hosts were exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and always happy to help with anything we needed. Their attention to detail and hospitality made us feel right at home.

Overall, a fantastic place to stay, and we would happily return in the future. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a relaxing getaway with excellent facilities and wonderful hosts.

Liked The site is lovely and the owners are very nice.

Disliked There was an issue with water as the shower and sink area had zero running water. I know it is a new site so put this down to teething issues.
However I would still return to this very nice site.

yes we are very new at this and yet up for the challenge of making all visitors enjoy their stay.

Unpowered grass and earth caravan site (members only)

Liked Fantastic new small "semi" wild camping area in a beautiful location, with large pitches. It gets the basics right with room for some improvements which are in hand. It is fantastic & secure for dogs. Very quiet and peaceful, think i woke myself up being "too" quiet. Great that it has fire pits, with wood to use and Site BBQ availible. On a clear night will be grat for Stargazing and its only a 10 min walk from site to Kilvington Lakes.

Disliked Nothing disliked, Yes its new so probably a few tweaks going forward. Spoke to Dave(owner) and he stated a few tweaks/improvements to come. The entrance key press just needs to move location slightly as a bit of a stretch to open from site side when leaving.

Bell tent

Liked Spent just the one night at Labyrinth with my dog, but wish I'd booked a longer stay! I was greeted by the owners on my arrival, who explained the site and facilities to me and give me a tour.

I stayed in the bell tent which was gorgeous. The bed was comfy, as were the chairs. There is a sofa outside, with a table and fireplace, perfect for a BBQ and relaxing in the evening. When it got too chilly, I made use of the log burner inside the tent and it was toasty in no time.

Whilst the bell tent pitch is set in the woodland and it feels private, like your own little space. I didnt make use of the hot tub, but I will be doing that on my next visit.

There is a shared kitchen, if needed and your own shower and facilities.

Both me and my dog loved the place and we're sure to be back.

Disliked Nothing.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Lovely flat campsite, we had an open grassed area surrounded by woodland, there was so much wildlife, especially birds. Easy location to get to but nearest road isn't very busy so there wasn't any traffic noise at night.

Unpowered grass and earth caravan site (members only)

Liked Dave was great with his communication right from the off which made me feel very welcome. The site is a lovely little space, off grid camping which is what I wanted. Basic amenities which wasn’t a problem as I came prepared. I didn’t hear any traffic or aircraft flying over just peace and quiet.

Disliked Not much to say here to be honest.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked Everything. The owners were lovely, the pitch was spacious and flat, the ground was good for tent pegs. The location was really good, it felt remote and peaceful. There was lots of space to explore and for the children to run in and at night it was quiet and dark. The fire pit was great fun and the kitchen area was very usefull.

Disliked Not really a dislike, the toilets are very basic and a long way from the pitches. They were very dark at night which is a bit of a challenge for youngsters.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for visiting and thank you for taking the time to give us feedback.

We are aiming to introduce a compost toilet at the kitchennette and one also another one near the portable toilet and shower.

We are aiming to please and aiming to
keep the site as a basic as possible.

Lighting has also been kept to
a minimum and we advice torches at night time to
ensure the natural environment is kept as natural as possible.

again thanks for your visit and feedback.

Local attractions

In Newark-on-Trent (15 minutes’ drive), you can admire the ruins of the medieval castle (where King John met his maker) from the riverside path, before continuing on to a large pointy sundial and the Newark Trent Weir. On the outskirts of town is the Newark Air Museum, with its collection of aircraft and engines. In addition to opulent rooms (such as the Elizabeth Saloon, with its gilded decoration), Belvoir Castle (15 minutes) has splendid outside areas like the Japanese gardens, dotted with colourful camellias and rhododendrons. Meanwhile, kids might enjoy a petting session at the animal park (open seasonally), with sheep and goats. Practise your best archery stance so that you can take a suitably dramatic picture next to the Robin Hood Statue when in Nottingham (40 minutes). Then climb up to Nottingham Castle, an elegant mansion built on the remains of an 11th-century fortress, or book yourself on to a cruise along the River Trent.
