  • Wild camping with perks in woodland 40 minutes’ drive from Nottingham
  • Newark-on-Trent 15 minutes’ drive; Skylarks Nature Reserve 25 minutes
  • Wood-fired hot tub, dog park and communal kitchen on site
You don’t have to be able to extricate yourself from a tortuous maze to stay at The Labyrinth Woodland. This small, remote site with grass pitches is in nine acres of woodland in the Nottinghamshire section of the Vale of Belvoir, about 40 minutes’ drive from Nottingham. This is wild camping, but with a large handful of excellent perks. Yes, the toilets are of the portable kind, but the shower (in an environmentally friendly roofless cabin in the middle of the forest) could easily be found in a glamping set-up. Then there are communal areas – from the outdoor kitchen, which has a camping gas cooker and washing-up facilities (with hot water), to the campfire area, where you can help yourself to wood that has already been chopped for you. Last but by no means least, you can have a soak in the wood-fired hot tub (for which there is an additional charge). Squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, deer and birds call these woods home, so keep your eyes peeled to see what wildlife you might spot. Your four-legged buddy should be kept on a lead at all times, but there is a private and secure dog park on site. Other good destinations for a dog-friendly walk are the banks of Kilvington Lakes (15 minutes’ walk) and the Linear Walk (15 minutes’ drive), which follows the path of a former railway line. Other local activities include fishing at Belvoir Waters or Portland Fishing Lakes (five minutes) and birdwatching at Skylarks Nature Reserve (25 minutes), an area of wetlands and grasslands.

What customers say

T reviewers rave about this chilled bush campsite. Spacious spots, super-friendly hosts Dave and Rose, and a cracking "back to basics" vibe. Hot tubs, fire pits, wildlife, and starry skies get a big thumbs up. Mobile signal's a bit patchy, and the loo's basic, but a new compost dunny's coming. Perfect for a digital detox and a dose of nature.

Unpowered grass tent site

Liked This is a lovely relatively new site. 5 pitches set in a secure off grid peaceful woodland. The owner Dave is really friendly, helpful and welcoming. I was solo camping and he went out of his way to make sure I enjoyed my stay and felt safe. The location is great for exploring the beautiful Vale of Belvoir. Lots of wildlife to watch especially at dusk when sat by the fire pit. Nice comunal washing up facilities and open air shower room. I would definitely recommend. I took my own tent but saw that he glamping area which looked amazing.

Disliked Working the showers involves turning on a series of valves and switches. Some instructional signage would be helpful going forward.

Once locked inside the gates of the site the key needs to be returned to its secret safe. Not being tall enough to reach the safe I had to keep climbing over the gate to return the key. This was achievable if a bit inconvenient. But a less able boddied person would find this a problem.

Don't like the porta loo. But Dave did tell me a compost toilet is in the process of being made, so that will be welcome.

Bell tent

Liked Wow what an amazing place! We have stayed in many bell tents but this one & its surroundings was the best by far. It is so secluded & you just feel away from the world unlike anywhere else I have ever stayed, which is why its at the top of my list for future stays.
The game cupboards was a really nice touch for the children & kept them entertained.
I would 100% recommend to anyone that wants a private break away.

Disliked Its honestly very hard to find anything to dislike about the place. However, a better toilet facility would be nice but I appreciate its in the middle of nowhere & off-grid.

Bell tent

Liked Peaceful, well equipped, super friendly host. Great communication.
The bell tent was beautiful and had everything we needed for a super relaxing get away.
All of the facilities are so thoughtful thought through. And it’s great to find somewhere with a hot tub that doesn’t have a minimum nights stay.
We had lunch in Newark before checking in and were able to pick up some really nice supplies from local businesses to supplement our trip!

Bell tent

Liked What a fantastic stay at Labyrinth Woodland! We stayed in the bell tent, which was absolutely lovely and had everything we needed, as well as some thoughtful extra touches. The setting was beautiful, peaceful, and nicely secluded, with our own portaloo and outdoor shower. There was plenty of outdoor space to relax and play, including a fire pit, outdoor sofa area, and access to a games cupboard. We especially enjoyed having a go with the archery set!

We only met one of the owners, Dave, as Rose was away, and he couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating. Both him and his dogs were wonderful with our little boy, who had an amazing time and can't wait to stay again!

We know there are more developments planned for the future, but the site already looks fantastic so it is bound to get better and better as more is added. We'd definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful, unique woodland escape, and we will certainly be back!

Local attractions

In Newark-on-Trent (15 minutes’ drive), you can admire the ruins of the medieval castle (where King John met his maker) from the riverside path, before continuing on to a large pointy sundial and the Newark Trent Weir. On the outskirts of town is the Newark Air Museum, with its collection of aircraft and engines. In addition to opulent rooms (such as the Elizabeth Saloon, with its gilded decoration), Belvoir Castle (15 minutes) has splendid outside areas like the Japanese gardens, dotted with colourful camellias and rhododendrons. Meanwhile, kids might enjoy a petting session at the animal park (open seasonally), with sheep and goats. Practise your best archery stance so that you can take a suitably dramatic picture next to the Robin Hood Statue when in Nottingham (40 minutes). Then climb up to Nottingham Castle, an elegant mansion built on the remains of an 11th-century fortress, or book yourself on to a cruise along the River Trent.
