  • Peaceful site next to a 16th-century pub in Kirkby on Bain
  • 1.75-acre coarse fishing with carp, bream, rudd, roach and more
  • Three miles from Woodhall Spa and 21 from Lincoln
Fishing and fauna? Barn owls and kingfishers are among the residents you might encounter among the six acres of wildlife haven of Bainside House in Lincolnshire, with more feathered and furry critters easily spottable in the surrounding countryside via serene strolls along the waters of the Bain. Fish should be easily spotted on site as well: Bainside House's main attraction is its 1.75-acre fishing lake stocked with carp, bream, tench, perch, rudd, roach and barbell. Fishing not your thing? Golf courses and cycle paths are nearby, or you could amble along to Woodhall Spa, zip along to Lincoln, or hike the Lincolnshire Wolds, the Lincolnshire Fens or the Viking Way. (Whatever you pick for your day, round it all off with an evening at the topping 16th-century pub next to the site, which serves good food and a range of cask ales.) Among the basic but well-maintained amenities at this friendly place are a toilet and shower block with disabled access; recycling, and chemical disposal (only biodegradable or cesspool-safe chemicals to be used here, please). Bainside is for adults only.

Unpowered grass site

Liked Small, flat and well maintained site. Only 3 toilets but wasn't a problem as most people in caravans. Lovely village location with pub right next door. Wooden hut selling basic provisions.

Disliked The site specifies no stag, hen or large single sex groups - presumably to prevent late night noise and party groups. However we were kept awake until gone midnight listening to two drunk women singing and a man with a loud distinct voice. There are no signs asking for quiet after a certain time.

From the manager: Thankyou for your review.

We're sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your stay.

However, Denise, when you both arrived (early) on you motorbikes you were rude clearly unhappy from the start, we bent over backwards and didn't receive a smile!

We had a full site this weekend and not one complaint received from any other guests, at no point during your one night stay did you raise any concerns about noise or ask us to resolve it.

We take all feedback seriously but it's hard to improve or assist when nothing is mentioned at the time, we are always here to help, all we ask is a bit of respect and honesty.

We did however have a guest mention the noise of your motorbikes leaving in the morning disturbing them from their sleep.

We apologise if you were disturbed in the evening, we suggest for your future travels you wheel your motorbikes out early morning considering other guests.

Take care

Powered grass caravan site

Liked Well manicured and quiet site, in the lovely Lincolnshire Wolds. Good relaxed fishing in the private lake. Good, spotless, well maintained facilities. The owners obviously take pride in all they do. Pub literally 2 mins. Horncastle 5 min drive.
Will be back later in the year.

Liked Location was great. Very peaceful. Pub next door is fab! Lovely walks from the site and village. Facilities were nice and clean.

Disliked You need a fob to open the entrance/exit barrier, which we weren't given, and didn't know we needed until we tried to leave. We had to ask some people on a nearby pitch to open it for us using their fob.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to pop a review on and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us.

We give our guests a barrier fob on arrival, our apologies for not passing you one on. We are only a phone call away if not on site and have 2 key safes on our reception shed which have barrier fobs in and we would have given you the code.

We hope to welcome you back.

Take care and enjoy your travels.

Liked Clean adult site only. It is a small site, but plenty of room between pitches
Clean facilities. Small shop
Lovely walks, with a quiet pub with excellent food next door.
Nice to see chickens roam
Hosts are a really nice couple
Very peaceful

Disliked Two pitches are right next to the septic tank, which at times smelled very bad. I would suggest these two plots are not used, as it really lets everything else about this site down for those staying on these pitches
It did not seem enforced that owners securely tied to their dogs in provided pitches.
Also, adult sites, should not allow 'any' children, which on our visit was not the case. We didn't mind there was a grandchild present, but adult really should mean adult!

From the manager: Thankyou for your feed back and we are pleased that you enjoyed your stay overall.

We would just like to point out that we keep all parts of the site well maintained and regularly checked to make sure everything's clean and comfortable for our guests.
We're also sorry to hear you felt that their was a foul smell but didn't mention it while you were here, we'd have happily moved you to another pitch right away.
We are always on hand to help and want everyone to have the best possible stay with us.

The campsite is adult only however their was a couple with an 8 month old baby staying in the holiday let and they visited their parents for a few hours who were staying in a caravan in the corner of the campsite which was no where near the main field.

Apologies if this affected your stay with us and again we would have appreciated you making us aware and we would have asked the family to stay in the grounds of the holiday let which is off site.

Happy travels and take care.

Liked I originally booked to stay for 3 nights but enjoyed it so much I stayed for 6. Showers toilets were excellent always hot water and very clean. Fiona and Paul couldn't do enough for you always asking if everything is OK and full of area information. I would definitely recommend this site, an added bonus was a lovely pub at the side of the site with food to die for.

Disliked Nothing

From the manager: Thankyou for your lovely review David.
We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay so much that you decided to stay even longer, that's the best compliment we could ask for.
It means a lot to know that the campsite felt like a place you wanted to stay a little longer at.

We really enjoyed having you here and hope the extra days gave you chance to relax, explore and fully soak it all in.

Safe travels and we hope to welcome you back again.

Local attractions

This amiable place is close to the Bain river, in the small village of Kirkby on Bain between Horncastle and Coningsby. Walking trails and cycle paths are easy to access from here, along the river, from the village and to the nearby Sites of Special Scientific Interest of Kirkby Moor and Moor Farm Nature Reserves, to the west of Kirkby on Bain. The Lincolnshire Wolds are six miles away. The handsome market town of Woodhall Spa three miles away is a Fairtrade village with a selection of top shops to spend some money at, and access to long-distance walks of the Fens including the Viking Way's 147 miles from the Humber Bridge in north Lincolnshire to Oakham in Rutland. (Much more easily, there's also the Spa Way, a traffic-free footpath of just over three miles from Woodhall Spa to Horncastle.) Golfers can shoot along the courses and academy of Woodhall Spa's National Golf Centre, voted among the top 25 courses in the world; and if you'd rather have putting, a course plus tennis courts, an outdoor pool and a croquet lawn are at Jubilee Park three miles away. For a day trip (or two), the castle, cathedral and shops of Lincoln can be reached in about 21 miles.
