With green fields galore and gently sloping hills, Beanhill Farm is oh-so peaceful. Set in the Forest of Dean, the atmosphere is firmly rural, but it's super convenient for those who don't fancy staying somewhere where the local pub is too far away; two village pubs are less than a mile away. Relaxing is top priority in this scenic corner of Gloucestershire. Take in the valley views by day and stargazing opportunities overhead by night. Firepits are available for hire directly from the site, so you don't need to think too much. The prevailing colour of the views depends on the season: bluebells fill the surrounding woods in spring, while bright yellow rapeseed takes over for a bright backdrop in the summer months. The A48 is less than a mile away, making it easy to plan day trips on either side of the Welsh border. Open-water swimming, bicycle hire, scenic walks, Forestry England sites, the river Wye and attractions like Go Ape, Puzzlewood, Tintern Abbey, a steam railway and Chepstow Castle are all within 15 to 20 minutes' drive of the site. The nearest supermarket, in the nearby town of Lydney, is a 10-minute drive away. If you'd rather someone else sort food for you, there are takeaways in Lydney or stroll down into Alvington (20 minutes' walk) for local food. Barbecues are allowed for open-air cookouts, and you’re welcome to bring your dog along for this rural jaunt. All the essentials – a washing-up area, toilet block and showers (shower tokens must be purchased) – are provided to keep everyday life ticking along.

Liked Calm atmosphere.
Friendly site owners.
Close to lots of walks and things to do.
Clean facilities.
Noisy campers were dealt with efficiently.

Disliked It was very sloped, we managed to find a flat-ish place for the tent in the end.
The accessible toilet/shower cubical had a step going up into it.
The fire pits and shower tokens were expensive.

Liked Lovely clean campsite. The owners were nice and welcoming and helpful.
A lovely run pub (The Rising Sun). Run by 2 young ladies who produce lovely food. 30 min walk from the campsite.

Disliked Probably need more toilets, showers and washing up area. The ones they do have were very clean.

I liked that it wasn't flooded with lights like many are. We were able to enjoy clear sky, stars and moon.

Liked The facilities were clean, the host was welcoming and the site was spotless too. The residents were respectful of one another. The price was affordable too

Disliked I ended up sleeping on a slope which was very uncomfortable, so I would go again and camp in a different spot as opposed to at the bottom of the site. Also, I think I'd check for nearby events before booking, as we went with a child who couldn't sleep due the band playing at a pub in the distance, not a fault of the campsite but defo worth researching beforehand

Liked Only stayed one night, but it was very peaceful and quiet.
The toilets and showers were basic but very clean. All in all we had a very pleasant time.

Liked Lovely site. Pub 20 minute walk away.
Nice chilled vibe and feels secluded. Trees all around and no road noise. Toilets and pay for showers (£1/3 min) clean and decent. Some pitches are on a slope but plenty of flat options if its not too busy.

Liked Lovely quiet little site, great facilities, clean and sufficient for the numbers of campers there. Nice shady area to camp in at the far end of the field. Friendly owners. Really safe environment for children to play in. Less than 10 minute drive to Puzzlewood which was an excellent afternoon out.

Disliked Fairly sloping field in places, so worth thinking carefully about where to pitch. Need tokens for the showers, so make sure you get these before reception closes (paid for, £1 each, but this was a shower that was plenty long enough, and warm). I think you would need to drive to most places (but we didn't attempt any walks directly from site).

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types will have plenty of options in the Forest of Dean. Offa’s Dyke Path (10 minutes’ drive) straddles the English-Welsh border: following the route down towards the Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow makes for a particularly pleasant jaunt. The site is also 10 miles south of the popular Family Cycle Trail, where guests can make a whistle-stop tour of the surrounding countryside. The circular 11-mile route runs through the Cannop Valley, along the old tracks of the Severn and Wye railway (passing through abandoned stations) and passes the remains of former coal mines at Foxes Bridge and Lightmoor. Mallards Pike (20 minutes' drive), where there is a car park, is also home to a Go Ape high ropes course. If you want to experience greenery with a bit of a twist, head to Puzzlewood (15 minutes) for a maze (as the name suggests), plus farm animals, an adventure playground and an interactive treasure hunt for the kids. For a proper step back in time, Tintern Abbey (20 minutes' drive) is surely one of the most impressive ruins in Wales. Make a day of it by contrasting its elegant Gothic facade with the sturdy walls of Chepstow Castle (also 20 minutes), built in days of yore to defend the banks of the River Wye.
