General

  • Peaceful site set in the Royal Forest of Dean
  • A 20-minute drive from Tintern Abbey and Chepstow Castle
  • Less than a mile from two excellent village pubs

Green fields galore + a meandering brook + gently sloping hills = a splendid spot to pitch up. Beanhill Farm may look like a humble enough place, but its location in the Royal Forest of Dean (how posh) puts it firmly into 'tiptop area' territory.

In this secluded corner of Gloucestershire, guests can take in valley views by day and stargazing opportunities overhead by night (a firepit and wood can be arranged to keep you cosy after dusk). The prevailing colour of those views depends on the season: bluebells fill the surrounding woods in spring, while bright yellow rapeseed takes over for a bright backdrop in summer months.

The A48 is less than a mile away, making it easy to plan day trips either side of the Welsh border. The nearest supermarket, in the nearby town of Lydney, is a 10-minute drive away; if you'd rather someone else sorted the eats stroll down into Alvington (20 minutes' stroll) for local food and an ale or two at one of two local pubs.

Barbecues are allowed for open-air cookouts, and you’re welcome to bring your dog along for this rural jaunt. All the essentials – a washing-up area, toilet block and showers – are provided to keep everyday life ticking along.

The naughty owls who like to have very loud conversations between 1 am and 5am .... only kidding loved the owls worth losing a little sleep to be so involved in nature.
Not a dislike but if there was say a farm breakfast pack on sale that would be awesome

From the manager...

Sorry about the naughty owls.. we also lie in bed listening to them sometimes 😁
We have done breakfasts in previous years but unfortunately with the Covid situation we thought it was better not to this year..

There are only 2 toilets which is rather too few for the size of campsite.

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely comments.. but there are 3 toilets & 3 showers.. 1 cubical has both in so family’s with little ones or less able people have more space 😊

Impossible to find an area to pitch which wasn't sloping.

Unaccompanied children playing football extremely close by our tents and cars most of the time we were there . Would opt for a campsite with a separate playing area next time.

From the manager...

Sorry you couldn’t find a non sloping part but the whole of the bottom end was free when you came so there were a few flat pitches .. also I’m sure if you asked the children to move they would of, alternatively you could of let me know & I would have asked them.. we do welcome family’s & children and encourage them to make the most the whole site, we purposely don’t have a separate play area as we like everyone to join in when games are being played. 😁

The layout of the campsite is good, with amenities only a short walk away. Supermarkets and take away's only a short drive away. Well sited to explore the forest of Dean.

    Disliked:

We did not like the showers so much. The cubicles were big enough, but with the shower head fixed on the ceiling, all of the floor gets wet, so there is nowhere dry to get dressed. Being a unisex shower block I didn't want to emerge in a partially clothed state. Also the light tended to time out before I was finished.
We stayed for 4 nights, and on the 3rd day we wanted a nice relaxing day at the camp site, watching movies in our van and cooking. This was fine until the woman on the ride on grass mower appeared to cut the already very short grass. She was driving right up to our van and making a lot of noise, which we thought was a bit inconsiderate. This went on for a good 45 mins. I had a bit of a walk about afterwards and couldn't find any grass clippings. There is a big sign by the washing up sinks stating "Respect other peoples privacy".
There were no menus from local pubs or takeaways available.
Due to Covid they had disabled the hair dryer in the shower block, which did not affect us as we had our own to run off our elec hook up, but I did see a couple of women camping in tents with no apparent way of drying wet hair.

From the manager...

Really sorry you didn’t enjoy your stay.. unfortunately the reason the grass didn’t look too long was that it is mowed regularly.. I do it at that time as departures are by 11am and arrivals are after 2pm and most people are out and I only have a 3 hour window to clean, recycle & tidy the site.. this includes mowing. We have had people staying everyday since we opened so there is always someone on the site when we mow.. I don’t do it early in the morning or late in the evening as I wouldn’t want to disturb anyone’s sleep .. unfortunately there isn’t any other time to do it.
As for local menus the pubs change their menus regularly so any menu we keep may well be out of date quite quickly.. also within a 5 mile radius there is in excess of 20 takeaways & pubs.. quite a lot of menus to display .. but there are signs up telling people where they are & we are always happy to discuss what is on offer near us..
Most people manage very well in the showers.. sorry you couldn’t.
Also, you are quite right when you say the hairdryer was disabled due to Covid.. but that is due to government guidelines and as it didn’t affect you I’m not sure why you were so bothered about it.. no one else has complained.. even the ladies with the wet hair !
But thank you so much for your feedback 😁

Local attractions

Outdoorsy types will be spoilt for choice in the Forest of Dean. Offa’s Dyke Path (10 minutes’ drive) straddles the English-Welsh border: following the route down towards the Sedbury Cliffs near Chepstow makes for a particularly pleasant jaunt.

The site is also 10 miles south of the popular Family Cycle Trail, where guests can make a whistle-stop tour of the surrounding countryside. The circular 11-mile route runs through the Cannop Valley, along the old tracks of the Severn and Wye railway (passing through abandoned stations) and passes the remains of former coal mines at Foxes Bridge and Lightmoor. Mallards Pike (20 minutes' drive), where there is a car park, is also home to a Go Ape high ropes course.

If you want to experience greenery with a bit of a twist, head to Puzzlewood (15 minutes) for a maze (as the name suggests), plus farm animals, an adventure playground and an interactive treasure hunt for the kids.

For a proper step back in time, Tintern Abbey (20 minutes' drive) is surely one of the most impressive ruins in Wales. Make a day of it by contrasting its elegant Gothic facade with the sturdy walls of Chepstow Castle (also 20 minutes), built in days of yore to defend the banks of the River Wye.
