  • Family-run campsite on a working farm near Clowne in Derbyshire
  • Half an hour’s drive to the Peak District; Chatsworth House 40 minutes
  • Fishing pond and farm shop; direct access to walks and bike rides
Ramblers, fishing folk, families and their dogs – all are welcome at Stanfree Road Farm’s almost-wild campsite near Clowne and Chesterfield in Derbyshire. Set in rolling fields on a small working farm, this family-run site is a handy base for pottering around the Peak District, while keen anglers will probably want to stay behind and cast a line or two on the pond. Simple facilities out on the camping field include a toilet and shower block; there’s no lighting on site, so just make sure to bring along torches for the nighttime. At the handy family-run farm shop, you can pick up fresh eggs for a breakfast fry-up, as well as home-reared, grass-fed Aberdeen Angus beef for the evening barbecue (bring your own barbecue with you, ta). Vehicles are allowed on the meadow for pitching and packing-up purposes only, leaving the campsite safe for kids (and dogs on leads) to play safely. Parking is provided adjacent to the field.

What customers say

Charming, quiet farm stay with friendly hosts. Guests raved about the new, spotless amenities, well-kitted pods/huts, and great farm shop. Fishing's a winner. Minor gripes: no water at times, some noise from residents. Still, many keen to come back.

Unpowered grass caravan site

Liked The peacefulness of the site, the staff's helpfulness and care with our granddaughter's, showing them the animals and teaching them about the chicken's.
We had plenty of space and although thebpiches were not flat, it didn't take much of an effort to level off our campervan or the tent. The toilets and showers were clean, drinking water was available as well as a pot washing facility.
Having the farm shop on site was great, the produce was wonderful and far better than a supermarket with prices not that different. The shop was very popular with people driving to the site too.

Disliked Only two minor points, the first that there was no chemical waste disposal point on the site. The second that there was nowhere to put your clothes and towel etc in the shower cubical apart from one hook. Other than these points, there is nothing to dislike.

Local attractions

For active family days out in the fresh air, Clowne Branchline Greenway (15 minutes by bike) promises gentle rides along a former railway line. It links into the multi-use Archaeological Way, which passes old collieries on its way to the gorge and museum at Creswell Crags (both half an hour). There are more adventures to be had in the Peak District National Park (half an hour’s drive), like hiking along the banks of the River Derwent or maybe testing yourselves on a section of the Pennine Way from Edale (an hour). If you’d like to tick a few stately piles off your to-see list, the spectacular Chatsworth House (40 minutes) is open for tours of its sumptuous apartments and scenic walks through landscaped grounds. Nearby is majestic Hardwick Hall (20 minutes), where you can admire Elizabethan architecture at its best, while at hillside Bolsover Castle (10 minutes) there is a circular rampart walk with views over the Vale of Scarsdale. Still not had your fill of history? Head to Chesterfield (20 minutes) to marvel at the twisted steeple on the Crooked Spire church.
