  • Well-maintained and peaceful wild camping site in the Peak District
  • Buxton 15 minutes’ drive; Chatsworth House half an hour
  • Dogs welcome; village five minutes' drive away with pub and shop
Just how remote would you like your holiday accommodation to be? If the answer is fair to middling, Damside Campsite might just be the place for you: this pop-up spot is surrounded by the glorious wilderness of Peak District National Park. Doesn’t get much more blissfully peaceful than that – except for the occasional lowing cow, all is stillness here. Having said that, don’t worry: you won’t have to scramble across hills and dales for a pint as a traditional pub serving real ales and home-cooked food is right in the village of Peak Forest, a five-minute drive away. Both the site and the pub welcome dogs, though you'd be wise to keep them on a lead when walking past the farm animals. This is wild camping so facilities might not be abundant (there are no showers), but they are well maintained and include a portable toilet and a washing-up area. There is also fresh running water, and you’re welcome to start a campfire or a barbecue. You can grab essentials in the village shop, or head to Chapel-en-le-Frith (10 minutes' drive) or Buxton (15 minutes). If you’re here with the kids, the flat, grassy field where you’ll set up your tent makes for an excellent play area on which to run around, kick a ball or fly a kite. A nearby playground has swings, slides, a small adventure course and a multisports pitch. Walking paths start from right outside the farm, or you can drive to hiking areas like Chee Dale Stepping Stones (10 minutes), a dramatic gorge on the River Wye.

What customers say

Peaceful, remote stays with great views & level pitches. Toilets are spotless, owner's a legend. Brilliant Peak District access, easy pub walks. Minor gripes: toilet lights, high taps, walking distances, sheep droppings, no footpaths.

Liked Good view out to the hills, flushing toilets. Loved the old stone fences. Buxton not far away and worth a visit and plenty of walks to do.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Beautiful location. Pitches were all pretty flat. Toilet facilities were as described, kept clean and well stocked. Very friendly owners. I would return if in the area again.

Disliked A couple of disrespectful groups late at night made it difficult to sleep. However appreciate this is not the owners’ fault.

Unpowered grass tent or trailer tent site

Liked Great views across the countryside. The toilets were new and cleaned frequently.

Disliked Only 2 toilets on the bank holiday wasn't quite enough. Not a fault of the campsite but it attracted quite noisey campers on a bank holiday weekend including singing etc until 2am.

Local attractions

Highlights in the Peak District include the Peak Cavern (15 minutes’ drive), a network of underground chambers that also hosts live music concerts; and the Mam Tor mountain, a not-too-challenging hike that rewards with far-reaching views of the surrounding hills. The spa town of Buxton (15 minutes) spreads around the Buxton Visitor Centre & The Buxton Crescent Experience, part of an elegant Georgian sweep and the place where you can learn more about the local health-giving waters. Buxton Opera House sits on the edge of the Pavilion Gardens, crossed by the River Wye – and by a miniature railway. Chatsworth House (half an hour) is well worth a visit, whether you want to relax along the banks of the River Derwent with a picnic, or explore the 105-acre garden, with its statuary and waterworks. The impressive Painted Hall, in the elegant 18th-century mansion, is covered in dramatic and vibrant frescoes.
