Browns farm caravan park

  • Family-owned site with spacious pitches on a Devon working farm
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Exeter and the Jurassic Coast
  • Lots of walks in the local area; 10 minutes' walk to cosy village pub
Surrounded by lovely scenery next to the 14th-century farmhouse on a working farm, you’ll probably feel like you’re completely immersed in rural Devon when you stay at Browns Farm Caravan Park. And indeed you will be – the pitches at this family-owned site are spacious and peaceful, and a short drive away from footpaths for walking alone or with your dog by your side. Other outdoor activities including fishing, golf and horse riding can also be tracked down in the local area. Fittingly for a real rural location, there’s a lovely old pub 10 minutes’ walk away in the local village of Woodbury Salterton for drinks and dinner by the log fire under the traditional beams. There’s much more to this place than purely rural outings though, as it’s in an excellent spot for all sorts of days out. City days in Exeter and sandy ones in Budleigh Salterton require a drive of about 15 minutes or so, and there are plenty of attractions nearby too, from the rides of Crealy Theme Park to the floral displays of Bicton Park Botanical Gardens. Wherever you choose to roam, you’ll be coming back to peaceful pitches backed by hedgerows and with access to handy facilities including wifi, a washing-up area, a launderette, chemical disposal and a bathroom block with toilets and showers (including disabled facilities).

A tidy, peaceful working farm campsite with roomy, clean spots & welcoming owners. Hot showers, laundry. Great for local exploring, pubs nearby. Farm smells & road noise sometimes. WiFi/phone signal hit-and-miss. Good value, lots of return visitors.

Liked Polite greeting and nice pitch.

Disliked not many footpaths to walk in local area, ideal for going outside the area, however, the local small roads are busy and have little or no paths. Could only find one footpath nearby and that was not great. But for venturing around the area...great.

Powered concrete and grass site (plus)

Liked A quiet site, albeit occasional lowing of cattle (due to it being a working farm). Pitches fairly flat, lots of hedge cover. Easy to reach from main road (the sat nav will deliver you to a bend in the road with no sign of the campsite, but don't panic, just look for the small Browns Farm sign on the side of the road around the bend to guide you the final 20m). Friendly owner. The walk to the nearest pub (Diggers Rest) is a 7-8 min walk along a quiet (but unlit) country road, so if heading out in the darker evenings, take hi-viz and a torch to be on the safe side. The site is well situated for Exmouth; there are several National Trusts not far away (A La Ronde, Killerton etc). Great alternative to staying in a pricey hotel if you are visiting something at Westpoint arena over a weekend.

Disliked There are only two women's toilets and two basins - quite understandable as this is predominantly a caravan/motorhome park rather than catering for tents, but worth bearing in mind. Lovely hot water though!

Fully-serviced concrete and grass site (premium)

Liked Roomy pitches, pleasant surroundings.
Pub in Woodbury Salterton was ok, a bit dark.
If you don't mind a walk try the two in Woodbury 1m away. They were a bit livelier.

All in all a nice site and handy for exploring the "...mouths" nearby.

Disliked Some road noise whichever found acceptable as it was quiet at night. Might bother some though.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, Always a good idea to wear bright clothing and have a torch when walking on rural roads when dark. We have one row of pitches which are adjacent to an unclassified road which can be busy at peak times. Whilst the pitches are separated from the road by a well established hedge we are happy to move guests to another part of the site if we have availability should this be a problem .We are pleased that you liked our site and enjoyed exploring the area.

Liked Access, plots & location
Washing machine & dryer

Disliked Only two toilets & one shower
Too near farm (smells & some noise)

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review we are pleased that you had a good stay. We have four showers and five toilets we are sorry that you don't appear to have located them during your stay. We are clearly advertised as a working Farm so occasional noise and aroma should not be unexpected. Many locations with Farm in their address have long since ceased any connection with such activity. Our site has operated successfully in its position for many years so there are no plans at this time to relocate either the Farm or the Campsite.

Liked Remoteness. Small farm site. Very clean facilities. Decent sized pitches.
Bus stop at entrance on request.

Disliked Not a dislike but select a pitch away from hedgeline with trees as these are in shade most of the day.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for visiting us and indeed for taking the time to leave a review. Always happy to accommodate guests requests when allocating a pitch when possible. Shade under trees is dependent on season and time of day and indeed the sun shining. We look forward to seeing you again.

Both masts which serve the area give a good TV signal this is something however which we have no control of. Type of ariel seems to be a factor some fare better than others.

Local attractions

Time to stretch your legs? The closest spot is Woodbury Common, a mile away and a handy spot for dog walking, but there’s much to explore as the site sits on the edge of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. And of course there’s always the South West Coast Path – the seven-mile stretch from Budleigh Salterton to Sidmouth is a particularly rewarding one. Speaking of the coast, Budleigh Salterton (15 minutes’ drive) is a lovely place for a day out on the sandy beach, but you could also explore the offerings of Exmouth (15 minutes) or Dawlish (half an hour). Keeping it countryside instead, there’s fishing at Hogsbrook Lakes (five minutes), golf at Woodbury Park (five minutes) and the chance to coo over cute animals at either World of Country Life (15 minutes) or The Donkey Sanctuary (20 minutes). To keep the kids entertained for a full day, try the rides, shows, play areas and animal attractions at Crealy Theme Park (five minutes).
