Keen on Córdoba, not so keen on urban accommodation? Book a stay at Kampaoh Córdoba, 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre and well connected by road – and so handy for sightseeing or eating out in cosy tapas bars – yet set in the Sierra Morena foothills among the dense pine and holm oak woodlands of protected Parque Los Villares. Here you can get down to the serious business of being on holiday straight away – there’s no tent to put up, so just simply arrive and settle into your all-inclusive luxury tent. Each one comes with double beds, cooler fan, freezer box and hanging space for your clothes. Outside is a private area with seating. If you’re needing some downtime on site, swim a few laps, catch the sun on the poolside deck, or exercise any accompanying dogs on the way-marked trails that surround the glampsite. Longing for some pampering? Simply book a massage in the treatment room. Fuel up with views over the pool from the restaurant terrace, or stock up on provisions at the supermarket and create your own feast to share with friends or family back at your spacious tent. Alternatively, make for the iconic landmarks of ancient Córdoba: top of your wish list may be the extraordinary Mosque-Cathedral, with its intriguing blend of Moorish and Renaissance architecture.

So Córdoba (20 minutes’ drive) here you come. Number-one stop may be the red-and-white striped arches inside the eighth-century (but much rebuilt) Mosque-Cathedral, and you can step further back into time with a visit to the Roman-era Puente Romano bridge spanning the sleepy Guadalquivir River. Tour the colourful fountain-filled gardens of Palacio de Viana, and then have a wander around the cobbled back streets of the old San Basilio district to discover the flower-filled courtyards and patios that the city is known for. When sightseeing is done for the day, find yourselves a neighbourhood tapas bar and settle in for salmorejo chilled tomato soup and tortilla accompanied by local Montilla-Moriles wines. And of course, you don’t have to move very far to get active. Parque Los Villares itself has plenty of hiking and cycling routes, as well as a comprehensive visitor centre where you can learn about regional vegetation and wildlife. There are a couple of golf courses with mountain views within 20 minutes’ drive, and adrenaline-chasers can head to Guadalquivir Activo (half an hour) to paddle kayaks along the river, go zipwiring or practise archery.
