Newlands Country Lodge

It started off as a place for Kimberley contractors to lay their hard hats for a few nights – but the canny team at Newlands Country Lodge copped on quick that they were onto a winner. More and more sensible folk flocked to this handy and secluded smallholding spot since it opened in early 2016, for its handsome setting, peaceful vibe and friendly team, so it's now open to all for short-term stays, overnights and weekend breaks: do trot along to see why this is such a popular place. Newlands is on the outskirts of the Northern Cape capital of Kimberley, just across the road from the 3SAI military base on the outskirts of Roodepan, and within 20 minutes' drive of the city casino, the McGregor Museum and the famed Big Hole mine. There's plenty of parking for guests – all shaded, free and undercover – and security around the grounds at all times with continuous gate access too. Hire a 4x4 from the team to explore the region, or set off out on a guided tour around the local game farms, nature reserves, fishing spots and local attractions. Or just laze around on site instead, firing up a braai to cook up your grill under the South African stars: wood and firelighters are available to buy from the Newlands team.

Kimberley 10 minutes' drive away is packed with stuff to see and do, such as the famed Big Hole diamond mine, where Cecil Rhodes and his De Beers company (among others) gouged out their loot; the William Humphreys Art Gallery; the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre, and the Kimberley Africana Library. Among the several museums in town is the Kimberley Mine Museum, telling the subterranean story of the local mining trade: the Big Hole is one of the biggest mines in the world, so it's quite a tale. Kimberley is also a gateway for the Mokala National Park, over 26,400 hectares of wildlife haven to the south-east of the city. Look out for antelope, cape buffalo and black rhino on the ground, and pick up a bird guide at the park office to see what species can be spied in the skies. For assured South African wildlife sightings, drive 40 minutes to the Felidae Centre, a reserve focussing on the continent's big cats and other predators. Walking tours are available among the lions, cheetahs, jackals and more; you'll def need to bring your camera...
