Variety is the spice of life, as the famed saying goes. And variety is something served up in spades in the area around family-friendly Fortduinen – excellent news for those whose travelling parties involve somewhat differing views on what constitutes a great holiday, or who just love filling their days with as much different stuff as poss. Museums, art galleries, historic buildings? Off to s’Hertogenbosch with you. Rural ramblings? Head into the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park. Kid-friendly theme park? Efteling is a 20-minute drive away. Dinosaur museum? Camel dairy farm? Safari park? Lake swimming? Beer museum? All within easy striking distance. And that’s not even taking into account all the activities at the site itself... mosey around the park to encounter tennis courts, table tennis, a pétanque court, a miniature golf course, several playgrounds and an outdoor swimming pool with paddling pool. In summer the a lengthy list of kids’ club activities including professionally-run crafts, sports, games, dancing and the like may well inspire the kids to trot off on their own for a little bit, giving you the chance to spend some quality time in a shaded spot with book and possibly beer. The site’s mini market has a good range of drinks, snacks and groceries, and there’s a bread delivery service to get your mornings off to the right start. A bigger supermarket is a short stroll away.

Where to begin? Perhaps with a wander around the Loonse en Drunense Duinen National Park, a couple of kilometres away: walking paths and bike trails galore run through this 3,500-hectare area of grasslands and sand dunes, with bike hire available on site if you need it. Cool off after your efforts by heading to the IJzeren Man lake 15 minutes’ walk from the site, for swimming, playing on the inflatable obstacle course, kayaking, paddleboarding or just stretching out on the sandy beach. Time for a culture fix? Head up to s’Hertogenbosch, 20 minutes away by car, to visit the Noordbrabants Museum, the Stedelijk Museum and the museum dedicated to the work of famed local lad Hieronymus Bosch. Not quite your thing? Take a 45-minute drive to the Bierreclame Museum to see its collection of beer advertising and paraphernalia from around the world. Kid-friendly attractions within a half-hour drive include the Beekse Bergen safari park, the Groene Poort dinosaur museum and the Smits camel dairy farm, where you can meet the herd and sample pancakes made with their milk. And you can’t miss a trip to the splendid Efteling theme park, for fairytale- and fantasy-themed rides and shows that’ll keep the kids wide eyed all day long.
