A few minutes from the afsluitdijk road across the ijsselmeer

Planning to do a bit of pedalling on your Friesland hols? You may like to point your wheels towards spacious Camping Sotterum, a family-friendly site on the shoreline of the IJsselmeer near the little village of Cornwerd. This is a particularly fine spot for those looking to get out and about for a bit of cycling in the area: there are bikes to hire on site and lots of quiet cycle paths nearby. And if you’ve never cycled over the sea before, here’s your chance – the Afsluitdijk road across the lake is a few minutes’ bike ride away. Those bike outings might take you over to Makkum for watersports and beach days, or have you moseying around local museums; if you’ve got a car at your disposal as well you can look at taking your outings further afield to Leeuwarden and the excellent AquaZoo Friesland, both half an hour’s drive away. And in between such expeditions? There’s plenty to keep the kids happy here during hours spent on site: they can continue to zoom around on pedal karts, play in the panna cage or retreat to the games barn for table tennis, table football, pool table, dartboard and a TV. The main playground’s been kitted out with a trampoline, and there are satellite play areas scattered around the site so that parents can keep a beady eye on their nippers from their pitch. For calmer times, they may like to trot off and simply stroke the resident ponies... All the essentials are sorted here too: there’s free wifi, a communal kitchen area, a launderette and a toilet block with free hot showers.

Take a break from the bikes and head out on horseback instead: there’s a riding centre 10 minutes’ walk away from the site. If you’re up for a bit of aqua-based activity instead, take the 10-minute bike ride (or five-minute drive) to Makkum for windsurfing and kitesurfing (or watching such antics from the safety of the sands). Or take a break from all such activity and aim for one of the local museums: the open-air Het Friese Museumdorp (10 minutes’ drive) is a fine place to start, with the National Model Railway Museum (20 minutes) in Sneek a splendid alternative if the weather’s not ideal for outdoor days. Leeuwarden (half an hour) is the place to go if you’re after arty museums: the Fries Museum and ceramics museum are both excellent visits. Prefer to examine the natural world? Take a look at the creatures that live in and around the sea at AquaZoo Friesland (35 minutes) or turn your gaze skywards at the Eise Eisinga Planetarium (20 minutes).
