Vodatent at Vakantiepark Het Timmerholt is a veritable haven for anyone who feels more at home on water than land – this site in the Drenthe region of the Netherlands is ranged around the edges of a private lake, so go for a dip, cast a line, or take a canoe or pedalo for a spin. Waterbound adventures don’t have to end there – the De Boskamp outdoor swimming pool in Westerbork is a 10-minute drive from the site, and the Peppel indoor pool in Beilen 15 minutes away has free entry. Biking and walking route picks are plentiful in Drenthe too, with lots of trails and paths crisscrossing the area’s moorlands and forests: this is a top setup for leaving the car parked up, and you can easily pedal the 10 minutes to Westerbork if you need supplies. If you’re not feeling up to exploration, you don’t have to go far to stay entertained: do your best Ryder Cup impression on the 18-hole miniature golf course, rack up the points in pétanque or win your own personal Grand Slam on the tennis court. Kids can bounce around the playground, letting their spirits soar on the bouncy pillow and living the royal life on the play castle. Food? Reward yourself for your exertions with a meal at the on-site restaurant or head to one of the villages around Het Timmerholt if you feel like trying something new.

Get your two-wheel spinning and head for a track day at the Assen TT Circuit, a 20-minute ride from Het Timmerholt, where you can get a feel for what the superstars of bike racing experience on the circuit. When you’re through getting up close with the tarmac, take the kids to get up close with some exotic animals. Less than 10 minutes from the site is Zoo Bizar, the smallest zoo in the Netherlands, and a 30-minute drive will bring you to the Wildlands Adventure Zoo, where you can explore the arctic, the savannah and the jungle. Take a look through time too, as there’s a lot to learn about the area’s history: the Drents Museum, 25 minutes from Het Timmerholt, is an art and history museum that takes you back to prehistoric times, and, 15 minutes from the site, the Kamp Westerbork Reminder Centre tells the story of the persecution of the Jews who passed through the Westerbork transit camp in World War II.
